This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With many of the modern aircraft designed to be larger and lighter, there have been increasing interests in incorporating the structure mode when designing flight control system. Sliding mode control (SMC) is an approach to the design of control systems that shows significant robustness in the presence of large uncertainties in plant dynamics. In this study, formalized Multi-Input Mult-Output (MIMO) SMC based robust fight control system design procedure was introduced and presented. The study vehicle was selected to be the B-1 bomber, a highly flexible aircraft. The multi-input multi-output SMC design procedure was carried out using the study vehicle model. The structure modes of the aircraft was addressed. Finally, a pilot model was included to evaluate the robustness of the SMC design.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advanced Control of Aircraft, Spacecraft and Rockets introduces the reader to the concepts of modern control theory applied to the design and analysis of general flight control systems in a concise and mathematically rigorous style. It presents a comprehensive treatment of both atmospheric and space flight control systems including aircraft, rockets (missiles and launch vehicles), entry vehicles and spacecraft (both orbital and attitude control). The broad coverage of topics emphasizes the synergies among the various flight control systems and attempts to show their evolution from the same set of physical principles as well as their design and analysis by similar mathematical tools. In addition, this book presents state-of-art control system design methods - including multivariable, optimal, robust, digital and nonlinear strategies - as applied to modern flight control systems. Advanced Control of Aircraft, Spacecraft and Rockets features worked examples and problems at the end of each chapter as well as a number of MATLAB / Simulink examples housed on an accompanying website at http://home.iitk.ac.in/~ashtew that are realistic and representative of the state-of-the-art in flight control.

Book Robust Multivariable Control of Aerospace Systems

Download or read book Robust Multivariable Control of Aerospace Systems written by Declan Bates and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classical design and analysis techniques, many of which date back to the 1950's, are still predominantly used in the aerospace industry for the design and analysis of automatic flight control and aero-engine control systems. The continued success and popularity of these techniques is particularly impressive considering the radical advances in aircraft and spacecraft design and avionics technology made over this period. Clearly, an understanding of both the advantages and limitations of these methods is essential in order to properly evaluate the likely usefulness of more modern techniques for the design and analysis of aerospace control systems. One of the themes of this book is that the multivariable robust control methods it describes are logical and natural extensions of the more classical methods, and not replacements for them. It is assumed that readers of this publication are already familiar with classical flight control techniques. Emphasis is on the philosophy, advantages and limitations of the classical approach to flight control system design and analysis. Abstracted in Inspec

Book Robust Nonlinear Aircraft Flight Control

Download or read book Robust Nonlinear Aircraft Flight Control written by James M. Buffington and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project addresses the development of both control synthesis and analysis methods for affordable, highly integrated nonlinear aircraft control systems through basic research and development of control science and dynamical systems theory. The technical approach is to explore the following three primary research areas: (1) stability analysis, (2) robust nonlinear control, and (3) robust reconfigurable control. The stability analysis task assesses robustness of a baseline flight control system. The analysis results are used to develop on-board model and control allocation requirements for the other two tasks. The robust nonlinear control task includes development of compact on-board model and dynamic control allocation synthesis methods. The reconfigurable control design task includes development of an on-board model update synthesis method. The main accomplishment for the stability analysis task is using structured singular value analysis to formalize control allocation stability implications and to specify stability and control derivative accuracy requirements for on-board model synthesis. The main accomplishments for the robust nonlinear control design task are development of a dynamic control allocation formulation and development of a compact on-board model synthesis method. The main accomplishment for the robust reconfigurable control design task is the development of an on-line learning method for on-board model updates to enhance the robustness of indirect adaptive flight control systems.

Book Modern Flight Control Design Implementation and Flight Test

Download or read book Modern Flight Control Design Implementation and Flight Test written by Phillip T. Edwards and published by . This book was released on 1997-03-01 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis addresses the application issues raised implementing flight control designs derived from optimal control theory and the challenges in obtaining acceptable handling qualities when using these techniques. Using the USAF TPS FCS project as the controller architecture, four controllers were designed using classical methods, and H2, H3, and mixed H2/H optimal control theory. These designs were implemented in the Calspan VSS II Learjet, simulating unstable aircraft longitudinal dynamics and a limited handling qualities flight test evaluation was performed. The design phase found the optimal control techniques, as applied, difficult to design to handling qualities specifications. The H2, H3 and mixed H2/H controllers were unstable and often contained high frequency poles, which were difficult to implement. The flight test rated the designs acceptable on approach, but no handling qualities level for approach was determined.

Book Modeling Flexible Aircraft for Flight Control Design

Download or read book Modeling Flexible Aircraft for Flight Control Design written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trends to lower structural fraction of aircraft increase flexibility effects. Higher bandwidth control systems combined with these more flexible structures cause more aeroservoelastic interactions. Active, closed-loop control systems allow greater flexibility. To take advantage of this design possibility, an integrated ASE model is needed for conceptual and preliminary design stages of aircraft. This report seeks to define the equations of motion of a flexible aircraft from first principles to aid future discussions between experts in the specialties which make up ASE: aerodynamics, controls, and structures. This theoretical report documents the development of the equations, and states under what conditions the assumptions and approximations are accurate. It consists of 5 sections on different technical areas and a summary section: 1) Linearization of flexible aircraft hybrid-coordinate dynamic equations and inclusion of aerodynamic and gravitational loads; 2) Derivation of equations of motion and stability derivatives for a flexible aircraft vehicle; 3) Aerodynamics for aeroservoelasticity; 4) Model-order reduction for linear systems; and 5) Hydraulic actuator equations for aeroservoelastic modeling.
