Book Formability Characterization of a New Generation High Strength Steels

Download or read book Formability Characterization of a New Generation High Strength Steels written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advanced high strength steels (AHSS) are being progressively explored by the automotive industry all around the world for cost-effective solutions to accomplish vehicle lightweighting, improve fuel economy, and consequently reduce greenhouse emissions. Because of their inherent high strength, attractive crash energy management properties, and good formability, the effective use of AHSS such as Duel Phase and TRIP (Transformation Induced Plasticity) steels, will significantly contribute to vehicle lightweighting and fuel economy. To further the application of these steels in automotive body and structural parts, a good knowledge and experience base must be developed regarding the press formability of these materials. This project provides data on relevant intrinsic mechanical behavior, splitting limits, and springback behavior of several lots of mild steel, conventional high strength steel (HSS), advanced high strength steel (AHSS) and ultra-high strength steel (UHSS), supplied by the member companies of the Automotive Applications Committee (AAC) of the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). Two lots of TRIP600, which were supplied by ThyssenKrupp Stahl, were also included in the study. Since sheet metal forming encompasses a very diverse range of forming processes and deformation modes, a number of simulative tests were used to characterize the forming behavior of these steel grades. In general, it was found that formability, as determined by the different tests, decreased with increased tensile strength. Consistant with previous findings, the formability of TRIP600 was found to be exceptionally good for its tensile strength.

Book Novel Concepts for New Generation of High Strength Hot Dip Galvanizing Steel with Extra Formability NEWGENHSS

Download or read book Novel Concepts for New Generation of High Strength Hot Dip Galvanizing Steel with Extra Formability NEWGENHSS written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High strength steels with improved formability offer the potential of thickness reductions in forming automotive parts and thus contribute to lightweight concepts. In this context the NEWGENHSS Research Project aimed at the definition of innovative hot dip galvanized high strength steels for the automotive market. The dual phase and the interstitial free/HSS steel concepts were studied. The main objective was to select one dual-phase (DP) and one Interstitial Free high strength steel (IF-HSS) for a real industrial and application trial, with the purpose of obtaining the validation of the selected steel grades by the customers. . In the frame of NEWGENHSS Project, WPs structure followed a full material development path, starting from definition of laboratory scale investigations to final real car parts evaluation.^WP1 was addressed to the definition and preparation of laboratory casts of DP (ST1 and ST2) and IF-HSS (ST3, ST4 and ST5) steels, and their full characterization, by means of thermomechanical processing, microstructure investigation, mechanical properties and CCT curves. Results lead to the selection of several chemical compositions to be produced and tested in WP2 in a larger scale, in which such steels have been characterized to prepare the final industrial trials scheduled in WP3. On the basis of the new alloying concepts, an efficient processing route was defined for the DP steels that skip the cold-rolling step by making use of a low coiling temperature. This energyefficient processing route allows to reduce the production costs by around 10%. Aluminum addition concept in IF-HSS allowed to define a robust reduced temperature annealing cycle, meeting the high formability requirements together with targeted high strength.^After all the above mentioned production and characterization steps, WP4 was devoted to the final evaluation of the selected materials. For this purpose, cooperation with car-makers was established to produce real car parts for weight saving potential evaluation, as well as overall formability. The results allowed, an improved hole expansion ratio by 5% to 23% depending on composition and processing route (absolute values) and a higher FLC of the cold-rolled and annealed materials (10% higher for DP-Si and 14% higher for DP-B). In addition, complex forming operations could be realized without failure and welding was performed without problems due to the low carbon equivalent. The project outcome is potential weight reductions up to 20% in comparison to conventional microalloyed grades, allowing CO2 reductions in the transportation sector and the newly developed DP steels are ready for the market.

Book Advanced High Strength Steel And Press Hardening Proceedings Of The 4th International Conference On Advanced High Strength Steel And Press Hardening Ichsu2018

Download or read book Advanced High Strength Steel And Press Hardening Proceedings Of The 4th International Conference On Advanced High Strength Steel And Press Hardening Ichsu2018 written by Ma Mingtu and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2018-12-14 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The automotive industry requirements for vehicle weight reduction, weight containment, improved part functionality and passenger safety have resulted in the increased use of steel grades with a fully martensitic microstructure. These steel grades are essential to improve the anti-intrusion resistance of automotive body parts and the related passenger safety during car collisions. Standard advanced high strength steel (AHSS) grades are notoriously difficult to be formed by cold stamping; they are characterized by elastic springback, poor stretch flangeability and low hole expansion ratios. Hot stamping has therefore received much attention recently as an alternative technology to produce AHSS automotive parts. In this book, selected articles from the Fourth International Conference on Advanced High Strength Steel and Press Hardening held on August 20-22th, 2018 in Hefei, China, are compiled. It focuses on AHSS for the development of press hardening of high performance sheet metal for lightweight vehicle, advanced digital manufacturing technology, as well as the physical metallurgy principles of the hot stamping process.Aiming at the process design and industrial application for hot stamping of press hardened steel and high strength aluminium alloy sheet, the effect of temperature and strain rate on the formability and mechanical properties of the products is discussed. In addition, more practical cases are provided concerning accurate modelling and multi-physics coupling simulation of the hot stamping process. Furthermore, the influence of tool design on forming process, more precise process control strategies to increase production efficiency, and the improvement of hot stamping equipment by advanced design methods will also be presented.

Book Automotive Lightweighting Using Advanced High Strength Steels

Download or read book Automotive Lightweighting Using Advanced High Strength Steels written by Paul E Geck and published by SAE International. This book was released on 2014-06-13 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advanced high-strength steels (AHSS) are a family of steels that are stronger than most steels and have better formability than today’s conventional high-strength steels. New U.S. safety and fuel economy regulations have intensified pressure on OEMs to reduce vehicle weight. These pressures are causing auto companies to rethink alternative material applications and to look for opportunities that steel offers. The purpose of this book is to provide information for engineers who are designing the next generation of lighter vehicles. The material in the book is presented to help them make informed decisions on what basic materials to use and how to optimize those materials to achieve cost-effective weight reduction. The emphasis is on steels in general and AHSS in particular. However, there is much information on comparisons of steel with alternative materials for different subsystems of the vehicle. To support the latest automotive challenges in terms of weight reduction, this book lays out the opportunities for alternative material use in automobiles and offers the most up-to-date design guidance in efficient architectures that use AHSS. It simultaneously explores weight savings and resulting fuel economy advantages of a strategic usage of AHSS. Realistic comparisons with other alternative materials are made through detailed analyses. It also offers test cases that demonstrate how AHSS technology has developed. The focus of the text is on body and chassis structures and the sheet metal of which these systems are primarily made. More of the content addresses the automotive body, as this is where most of the AHSS are being applied today. The past, present, and future of AHSS are covered, as well as competing technologies such as aluminum sheet metal.
