Bell able to do something with it. O. Heaviside Mathematics is a tool for thought. A highly necessary tool in a world where both feedback and non linearities abound. Similarly, all kinds of parts of mathematics serve as tools for other parts and for other sciences. Applying a simple rewriting rule to the quote on the right above one finds such statements as: 'One service topology has rendered mathematical physics .. .'; 'One service logic has rendered com puter science .. .'; 'One service category theory has rendered mathematics .. .'. All arguably true. And all statements obtainable this way form part of the raison d'etre of this series.

Book Effects of Perceived Scoring Formula on Some Aspects of Test Performance

Download or read book Effects of Perceived Scoring Formula on Some Aspects of Test Performance written by Lawrence K. Waters and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study examined the effects on test performance of systematic variations in the scoring formulas which examinees were told would be used in scoring their tests. Two equivalent 50-item vocabulary tests were constructed. Form A was administered without scoring formula specified to 420 pre-flight students. Three days later Form B was administered to the same groups subdivided six ways, i.e., same instructions as Form A; zero weight for wrongs; 1/4, 1, 2, or 4 points off for wrongs. Increases in the penalty for wrong responses were accompanied by consistent increases in the mean number of omitted items, but the mean number correct remained fairly stable over the various penalties. In general, interest correlations were largest when all items were attempted and smallest when random responses were substituted for omitted items. The scoring formula appropriate to the structure of the items, (R - w/4), was generally superior to the scoring formula appropriate to the penalty that examinees were told would be used in scoring the test. Book Proceedings of the Boston Area Colloquium in Ancient Philosophy Volume XXIV 2008

Download or read book Proceedings of the Boston Area Colloquium in Ancient Philosophy Volume XXIV 2008 written by John Joseph Cleary and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009-05 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains papers and commentaries presented to the Boston Area Colloquium in Ancient Philosophy during the academic year 2007-8. The papers discuss a wide range of topics related to Plato and Aristotle. On Plato, topics include false pleasures in the "Philebus," the tripartite soul in the "Republic," and rhetoric in the "Phaedrus," and on Aristotle, the relation of the physical and psychological in "De Anima," of virtue and happiness in the "Ethics," of body and nature in the "Physics," and the role of pros hen in the "Metaphysics." One other paper argues for the Aristotelian origin of Stoic determinism.

Book Proofs and Computations

Download or read book Proofs and Computations written by Helmut Schwichtenberg and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-12-15 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Driven by the question, 'What is the computational content of a (formal) proof?', this book studies fundamental interactions between proof theory and computability. It provides a unique self-contained text for advanced students and researchers in mathematical logic and computer science. Part I covers basic proof theory, computability and Gödel's theorems. Part II studies and classifies provable recursion in classical systems, from fragments of Peano arithmetic up to Π11–CA0. Ordinal analysis and the (Schwichtenberg–Wainer) subrecursive hierarchies play a central role and are used in proving the 'modified finite Ramsey' and 'extended Kruskal' independence results for PA and Π11–CA0. Part III develops the theoretical underpinnings of the first author's proof assistant MINLOG. Three chapters cover higher-type computability via information systems, a constructive theory TCF of computable functionals, realizability, Dialectica interpretation, computationally significant quantifiers and connectives and polytime complexity in a two-sorted, higher-type arithmetic with linear logic.

Download or read book Logic and Implication written by Petr Cintula and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-01 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph presents a general theory of weakly implicative logics, a family covering a vast number of non-classical logics studied in the literature, concentrating mainly on the abstract study of the relationship between logics and their algebraic semantics. It can also serve as an introduction to (abstract) algebraic logic, both propositional and first-order, with special attention paid to the role of implication, lattice and residuated connectives, and generalized disjunctions. Based on their recent work, the authors develop a powerful uniform framework for the study of non-classical logics. In a self-contained and didactic style, starting from very elementary notions, they build a general theory with a substantial number of abstract results. The theory is then applied to obtain numerous results for prominent families of logics and their algebraic counterparts, in particular for superintuitionistic, modal, substructural, fuzzy, and relevant logics. The book may be of interest to a wide audience, especially students and scholars in the fields of mathematics, philosophy, computer science, or related areas, looking for an introduction to a general theory of non-classical logics and their algebraic semantics.

Book excerpt: Metaphysics is one of the principal works of Aristotle and the first major work of the branch of philosophy with the same name. The principal subject is "being qua being," or being insofar as it is being. It examines what can be asserted about any being insofar as it is and not because of any special qualities it has. Also covered are different kinds of causation, form and matter, the existence of mathematical objects, and a prime-mover God.

Book Natural Language Processing in Artificial Intelligence NLPinAI 2021

Download or read book Natural Language Processing in Artificial Intelligence NLPinAI 2021 written by Roussanka Loukanova and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-11-01 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book covers theoretical work, approaches, applications, and techniques for computational models of information, language, and reasoning. Computational and technological developments that incorporate natural language are proliferating. Adequate coverage of natural language processing in artificial intelligence encounters problems on developments of specialized computational approaches and algorithms. Many difficulties are due to ambiguities in natural language and dependency of interpretations on contexts and agents. Classical approaches proceed with relevant updates, and new developments emerge in theories of formal and natural languages, computational models of information and reasoning, and related computerized applications. Its focus is on computational processing of human language and relevant medium languages, which can be theoretically formal, or for programming and specification of computational systems. The goal is to promote intelligent natural language processing, along with models of computation, language, reasoning, and other cognitive processes.
