Book excerpt: Excerpt from Form and Function: A Contribution to the History of Animal Morphology The main battle-ground of these two opposing tendencies is the problem of the relation of function to form. Is function the mechanical result of form, or is form merely' the manifestation of function or activity? What is the essence of life - organisation or activity? Book Form And Function A Contribution To The History Of Animal Morphology

Download or read book Form And Function A Contribution To The History Of Animal Morphology written by Russell E S and published by . This book was released on 2023-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Form and Function" by E. S. Russell is a seminal work in the field of biology that explores the fundamental relationship between the structure (form) and the purpose (function) of organisms. This significant literature has had a long-lasting impact on morphology and physiological research. Russell's research digs on the complex interplay of an organism's morphological traits and biological functions. He emphasizes the significance of understanding how the structure of an organism evolved to fulfill particular functions in its surroundings. Russell's method is broad, encompassing many parts of biology such as anatomy, biomechanics, and adaptability. One of the key themes of "Form and Function" is the concept of adaptation, which outlines the ways organisms have developed over time to maximize their forms for survival and reproduction in different environments. Russell uses numerous examples from the animal and plant kingdoms to demonstrate how various structures and functions have coevolved in response to selective pressures. By emphasizing the need of evaluating both form and function whereas studying organisms, E. S. Russell's work has left an indelible mark. It is a foundational classic for biologists and continues to stimulate study in ecology, evolution, and physiology.

Book excerpt: Form and Function Volume 2 By Edward Stuart Russell This book is not intended to be a full or detailed history of animal morphology: a complete account is given neither of morphological discoveries nor of morphological theories. My aim has been rather to call attention to the existence of diverse typical attitudes to the problems of form, and to trace the interplay of the theories that have arisen out of them. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Morphology—the study of form—is often regarded as a failed science that made only limited contributions to our understanding of the living world. Challenging this view, Lynn Nyhart argues that morphology was integral to the life sciences of the nineteenth century. Biology Takes Form traces the development of morphological research in German universities and illuminates significant institutional and intellectual changes in nineteenth-century German biology. Although there were neither professors of morphology nor a morphologists' society, morphologists achieved influence by "colonizing" niches in a variety of disciplines. Scientists in anatomy, zoology, natural history, and physiology considered their work morphological, and the term encompassed research that today might be classified as embryology, systematics, functional morphology, comparative physiology, ecology, behavior, evolutionary theory, or histology. Nyhart draws on research notes, correspondence, and other archival material to examine how these scientists responded to new ideas and to the work of colleagues. She examines the intertwined histories of morphology and the broader biological enterprise, demonstrating that the study of form was central to investigations of such issues as the relationships between an animal's structure and function, between an organism and its environment, and between living species and their ancestors.

Book The Tragic Sense of Life

Download or read book The Tragic Sense of Life written by Robert J. Richards and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2008-11-15 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prior to the First World War, more people learned of evolutionary theory from the voluminous writings of Charles Darwin’s foremost champion in Germany, Ernst Haeckel (1834–1919), than from any other source, including the writings of Darwin himself. But, with detractors ranging from paleontologist Stephen Jay Gould to modern-day creationists and advocates of intelligent design, Haeckel is better known as a divisive figure than as a pioneering biologist. Robert J. Richards’s intellectual biography rehabilitates Haeckel, providing the most accurate measure of his science and art yet written, as well as a moving account of Haeckel’s eventful life.
