Book Great Scottish Heroes Fifty Scots Who Shaped the World

Download or read book Great Scottish Heroes Fifty Scots Who Shaped the World written by Stuart Pearson and published by Kings Road Publishing. This book was released on 2015-05-07 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Which Scottish anti-slavery campaigner lost a son in a Confederate prisoner-of-war camp during the American Civil War? Was the enemy of Scotland's first 'freedom fighter' not England, but ancient Rome? What was the laboratory accident that led to one of the greatest discoveries in modern medicine? How did the Declaration of Arbroath in 1320 influence the legal foundation of the greatest superpower the world has ever seen? Which singing superstar overcame a learning difficulty to become a worldwide inspiration? The answers to these and many other questions can be found in Great Scottish Heroes, covering 2,000 years of Scottish history and encompassing outstanding leaders in a broad range of pursuits, including the arts, exploration, medicine, sport, religion and politiME. Even a brief list of Scottish inventions shows the nation's influence upon our world: television, penicillin, the steam engine, the telephone, the vacuum flask, to name only a few. Scotland has for centuries produced a great number of exceptional, heroic individuals out of all proportion to its small population and geographical size. This concise but wide-ranging book offers biographies of fifty Scottish heroes and heroines, but in truth there are a hundred others, and more, who would qualify for inclusion. These men and women helped to shape the world, and continue to do so today. Great Scottish Heroes shows how they achieved such remarkable success. If you are a Scot by birth, descent, or adoption, this book will make you even prouder of your countrymen. If you are not Scottish, you will wish you were.

Book William Wallace and Robert the Bruce

Download or read book William Wallace and Robert the Bruce written by Charles River Charles River Editors and published by . This book was released on 2017-01-26 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: *Includes pictures *Includes accounts of the major battles of the Scottish Wars of Independence *Includes online resources and a bibliography for further reading *Includes a table of contents "A false usurper sinks in every foe And liberty returns with every blow." - Blind Harry From their very beginnings, England and Scotland fought each other. Emerging as unified nations from the early medieval period, their shared border and inter-related aristocracy created endless causes of conflict, from local raiders known as border reivers to full blown wars between their monarchies. Every century from the 11th to the 16th was colored by such violence, and there were periods when not a decade went by without some act of violence marring the peace. Out of all of this, the most bitterly remembered conflict is Edward I's invasion during the late 13th century. After Edward's death, the English were eventually beaten back at the famous Battle of Bannockburn in 1314, and thus the early 14th century was a period featuring some of Scotland's greatest national heroes, including William Wallace and Robert the Bruce. It still resonates in the Scottish national memory, all the more so following its memorable but wildly inaccurate depiction in the 1995 film Braveheart, which had Scottish audiences cheering in cinemas. William Wallace is one of the most famous freedom fighters in history, and over 700 years after his death he is still remembered as Scotland's beloved hero. But while the movie Braveheart helped make him a household name, and he is commemorated across Scotland as a natural leader and a loyal son of his homeland, he is also "the most mysterious of the leaders of the Scottish resistance to Edward I." This is because, paradoxically, the very famous soldier is also one of the least well known. In fact, the mystery surrounding Wallace is figuring out precisely, or even vaguely, who he was. Where did this champion of Scottish independence come from? Who was his family? What did he do before emerging from obscurity with the brutal murder of William Heselrig, the English sheriff of Lanark, in May 1297? So little evidence on Wallace's life exists that answering even the most basic questions about him can be a challenge. Piecing together the story of William Wallace's life is an exercise in asking more questions than can be answered, and often in looking at just as much conjecture as proof. This book attempts to separate fact from fiction while looking at the life and fighting of the man who inspired Braveheart. Though it's often forgotten today, Robert the Bruce was a bit shiftier, if only out of necessity. Robert the Bruce has become a figure of Scottish national legend, renowned as the man who threw off the shackles of English oppression, but prior to 1306, this Anglo-Scottish nobleman did little to cover himself in glory or to earn a reputation as a hero of the national cause. A member of one of Scotland's leading noble families, Bruce inherited his grandfather's claim to the right to be King of the Scots. That older Bruce had been one of the two leading competitors in the Great Cause, and the family still held ambitions toward the throne. They also held resentments dating back to that disputed inheritance against the Balliol clan and their supporters the Comyns. Of course, this was all forgiven and forgotten after Bannockburn and Bruce's rise to the Scottish throne, which he held for over two decades. This book analyzes the lives of William Wallace and Robert the Bruce. Along with pictures of important people, places, and events, you will learn about the two Scottish heroes like never before.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wallace, the Hero of Scotland To write a Life or History of Sir William Wallace, the champion of Scottish freedom, may seem a superfluous undertaking; and, indeed, so we felt when the subject was first suggested to us. On reflection and inquiry, however, it did appear that such a work would not be altogether unprofitable at a time when the memory of the great patriot and warrior has been so enthusiastically revived by the proposal to erect a monument to his name, at once national and worthy of his character. Download or read book Scottish Heroes of the Faith Classic Reprint written by Geo; W. T. M'gown and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scottish Heroes of the Faith It is quite a common remark that there are already too many religious biographies. This may be true; but in writing these lectures for his Bible Class the Author found that several volumes had to be mastered in connection with the study of each life, before material suitable and sufficient for his purpose could be procured. The contacts and collisions of virtue with its opposite are as real and momentous to-day as in times past; and if only we can catch somewhat of the spirit of those great souls of bygone generations, then the study of their lives will make us of the present wiser, better, and nobler. In the treatment of these biographies completeness has not been aimed at, multiplicity of detail has been rigidly guarded against, and controversial points have been studiously avoided. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stray Leaves From Scotch and English History: With the Life of Sir William Wallace, Scotland's Patriot, Hero, and Political Martyr Certain, when the author attempts this work, he has no wish to stir up natiopal feelings, and en gender strife betwixt the descendants of the Scotch and English in these lands or elsewhere. Centu ries have rolled on since the transactions recorded in the work, many of them bloody and cruel, took place, and the two nations in Britain are now happily united. As for the beloved Sovereign that reigns over them, her fond attachment to Scotland, evidently shews what little sympathy She has with one of her Royal ancestors, who in icted such terrible wrongs on one Of Nature's nobles, and on a people who struggled along with him so manfully for their liberties. And further than this, the attempts made to destroy these liberties, were not put forth with the consent of the English people, but through the ambition and cruel deceit of a monarch, who made several thrusts at their own independence for any person consulting the English records of that period will find that the leading barons, and especially the people themselves, engaged most reluctantly in the wars in Scotland. On both sides of the Border they are now one, and the cruel deeds of some of the English monarchs, in days gone by, cannot be charged against the nation as a whole. The youths of both countries, and their descendants elsewhere, may, therefore, claim Wallace as their common ancestor; and while they have many names on the roll of fame belonging to such, to which they can point with pride and satisfaction, none of them can dim the lustre of this great man, whether considered as a patriot or hero. A beau tiful English writer, when referring to this subject, has well expressed such sentiments in the following words The Englishman who now reads of the. Book Scotland s Forgotten Past A History of the Mislaid Misplaced and Misunderstood

Download or read book Scotland s Forgotten Past A History of the Mislaid Misplaced and Misunderstood written by Alistair Moffat and published by Thames & Hudson. This book was released on 2023-04-25 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Entertaining and provocative, this book from an expert on Scotland’s cultural heritage reveals the lost history of an ancient, proud nation. While Scotland’s history cannot be separated from its kings and queens, saints, and warriors, there is a rich story to tell about the country’s lesser-known places, people, and events. This colorful history of Scotland from award-winning writer Alistair Moffat chooses episodes, half-forgotten or misunderstood, that have been submerged by the wash of history. Bringing these stories to light and to life, this entertaining book reveals the richness and complexity of this nation on the northwest edge of Europe. Moffat takes us from the geological formation of the land that makes up Scotland to the first evidence of human habitation and then up to modern times. In the process our discoveries include: the cave of headless children; the origins of the Scottish kings and the real heroes of Scottish independence; the invention of tartan and the romance of the Highlands; Scotland’s answer to Shakespeare; the many US presidents with Scottish heritage, and other fascinating tales brought to life by Joe McLaren’s attractive woodcut-style illustrations. Even the most knowledgeable history buff will experience a sense of newfound knowledge and appreciation for this unique country, its history, and its people.
