Download or read book Egyptian Fakes written by Jean-Jacques Fiechter and published by Flammarion-Pere Castor. This book was released on 2009 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The truth behind the most incredible fake ancient Egyptian art mysteries, told in a lively, suspenseful, and well-documented page-turner.Egyptologists and forgers have been fighting an equally matched war for over a century: the connoisseurs eye vs. the ingenuity of the artists and their impressive creations, some considered authentic for decades before being withdrawn from major collections. A market has existed for copies of Egyptian artifacts from as early as the Phoenicians, but the appearance of fakes gathered strength through the nineteenth century and early twentieth century: new museums sprung up, archaeological digs revealed ever-greater treasures, and tourism flourished, bringing numerous collectors, all potential clients for forgers, in their wake.Author of an extensive scholarly volume on Egyptian fakes, but also the best-selling author of several thrillers, Jean-Jacques Fiechter brings this original subject to a general audience, introducing us to a series of colorful individuals and illicit deals set against a backdrop of golden sands and sinister backrooms. He retells the stories of masterpieces that found their way into the collections of the Louvre, Metropolitan Museum, and British Museumand discusses how forgers plied their trade, while also retracing the pioneering inquiries led by the first fake-busters. He demonstrates that despite scientific progress in the detection of fakes, the forgers speed and dexterity assure their ongoing production.

Book A Short History of Ancient Egypt

Download or read book A Short History of Ancient Egypt written by T. G. H. James and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 1998-07-07 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Protected on two sides by wide deserts and on another by the sea, the narrow strip of land watered and fertilized by the Nile was an ideal location for the development of the great civilization of Egypt. From its beginnings below the first cataract of the Nile to its long and legendary magnificence at the Nile Delta, ancient Egypt grew ever more prosperous and powerful, first as two kingdoms, then as one. A Short History of Ancient Egypt provides a concise, authoritative, and richly illustrated overview of ancient Egypt from its rise from the marshes to its submission to Rome. T. G. H. James describes how, in about 3100 B.C., the Egyptians first forged a unified administration and established a dynasty of kings. He follows the development of Egypt's greatest achievements: the organization of a national irrigation system, learning to write, and the construction of cities and tombs out of mud brick. As their art became more distinctive and expressive and their beliefs were shaped into religion, Greek philosophers came to Egypt to study. Tourists came to gape. At first, James explains, the chief adversaries of Egyptians were themselves. Civil strife could arise from floods or famines, or from ambitious factions of the royal family. But in time, the bounty of Egyptian agriculture, the grandeur of Egyptian art and buildings, and the ostentation of Egyptian wealth excited the envy and aggression of other nations. Although Egypt fought to retain its independence, it succumbed at last under the conquests of Persia, Greece, and Rome.

Book The Antiquities Trade in Egypt 1880 1930

Download or read book The Antiquities Trade in Egypt 1880 1930 written by Fredrik Hagen and published by Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters. This book was released on 2016 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The vast collections of Egyptian objects on display in Western museums attract millions of visitors every year, and they reinforce a cultural fascination for this ancient civilisation that has been a feature of European intellectual history since Roman times. This book tells the story of how these objects came to be here. The book presents the first in-depth analysis of this market during its golden age in Egypt in the late 19th and early 20th Century. It is primarily based on the archival material of the Danish Egyptologist H. O. Lange (1863-1943) who, during two prolonged stays in Egypt (1899/1900 and 1929/1930), bought objects on behalf of Danish museums. The travel diaries, and the accompanying photographs, are complemented by a wide range of other sources, including contemporary travel guides and various travel memoirs, which together paint an extraordinarily detailed picture of the extensive antiquities trade. The book looks at the laws governing trade and export, both in theory and practice, and the changes over time. The practicalities of the trade are described: its seasons, the networks of supply, the various methods available for acquiring antiquities, and the subsequent routes of transmission of objects, as well as the different types of dealers operating in Egypt. The geographical distribution of dealers is mapped, and the role of the Egyptian state as a dealer is investigated, both through official sale rooms, and as a seller and exporter of more or less complete tomb-chapels. The final part of the book contains a list, with short biographies, of over 250 dealers active in Egypt from the 1880s until the abolishment of the trade in 1983. Most of them are described here in detail for the first time. The book will be of interest to archaeologists, Egyptologists, papyrologists, museum curators, and historians of science, and is a useful starting point for anyone wishing to understand how the great Western collections of Egyptian antiquities were formed.

Book A Catalogue of the Egyptian Antiquities in the Possession of F G Hilton Price

Download or read book A Catalogue of the Egyptian Antiquities in the Possession of F G Hilton Price written by F. G. Hilton Price and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Catalogue of the Egyptian Antiquities in the Possession of F. G. Hilton Price The adoption of the Overland Route to India viâ, Egypt, and the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869, have drawn the attention of the civilized world to Egypt to a remarkable degree, and the increased facilities for travel which have been developed in that country during the last twenty-five years have induced thousands of people of all nationalities to visit the land of the Pharaohs. Following in the wake of the ordinary traveller came the philologist and the archæologist, and both have returned and proved that the "wisdom of the Egyptians" was no idle dream, and that the wise men of ancient Egypt actually gave the nations of Europe their letters. But while the philologist has been decyphering the mysteries of the hieroglyphics, the archæologist and excavator have brought to light by means of the spade inscriptions and texts, objects of art. paintings, statues, etc., the existence of which had never been thought of; and native and European alike have vied with each other in filling our national museums and private collections with ancient Egyptian antiquities of beauty and interest. The objects which are exhibited in public museums are, of course, available for inspection and examination, under certain conditions, by every person at reasonable hours; but private collections are often inaccessible, even to those who have a special interest in the subject of Egyptology.
