Download or read book Forever Changing Landscapes written by Esther Hinds and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a young girl growing up on the small island of Barbados, I often wondered what existed beyond the vision of the clear and beautiful ocean so readily accessible to one living on such an island. It was the decision governing my father's need to find a more viable source of finance for the supporting of his growing family that led to our immigrating to the United States of America. Crossing the ocean to this vast nation opened the door to a series of educational opportunities, allowing for the discovery of my musical gifts as a singer. The development of those gifts parlayed into the adventure of traveling from nation to nation, disclosing a myriad of varying peoples and their cultures. The landscapes viewed and experienced were not only of the terrain as it presented itself in foreign lands but also of the musical, emotional, and spiritual exposure, which grew and expanded as I developed as an artist and as a person. Having been reared as a Christian provided the foundation that served as a solid underpinning in the world in which I would now have to navigate. Forever changing were the choices and chances I would encounter. Relying on the non-changing grace of God allowed for my ultimate success in managing the many layers of the challenges presented in developing a career and a family, managing what would be gained and what would be lost. Forever Changing Landscapes is a personal view through the lens of my memory over and through the many oceans crossed, the nations visited, as well as the myriad of musical, emotional, and spiritual mountains traversed through the years of my life.

Download or read book Stories we live and grow by written by Muna Saleh and published by Demeter Press. This book was released on 2019-02-01 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interweaving my experiences as a Canadian Muslim woman, mother, (grand)daughter, educator, and scholar throughout this work, I write about living and narratively inquiring (Clandinin and Connelly, Narrative Inquiry; Clandinin) alongside three Muslim mothers and daughters during our daughters’ transition into adolescence. I was interested in mother-and-daughter experiences during this time of life transition because my eldest daughter, Malak, was in the midst of transitioning into adolescence as I embarked upon my doctoral research. I had many wonders about Malak’s experiences, my experiences as a mother, and the experiences of other Muslim daughters and mothers in the midst of similar life transitions. I wondered about how dominant narratives from within and across Muslim and other communities in Canada shape our lives and experiences. For, while we are often storied as victims of various oppressions in media, literature, and elsewhere, little is known about our diverse experiences—par-ticularly the experiences of Muslim mothers and daughters composing our selves and lives alongside one another in familial places.

Download or read book Landscape Logic written by Allan Curtis and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2012-04-11 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2005, researchers from four Australian universities and CSIRO joined forces with environmental managers from three state agencies and six regional catchment management authorities to answer the question: 'Can we detect the influence of public environmental programs on the condition of our natural resources?' This was prompted by a series of national audits of Australia's environmental programs that could find no evidence of public investment improving the condition of waterways, soils and native vegetation, despite major public programs investing more than $4.2 billion in environmental repair over the last 20 years. Landscape Logic describes how this collaboration of 42 researchers and environmental managers went about the research. It describes what they found and what they learned about the challenge of attributing cause to environmental change. While public programs had been responsible for increase in vegetation extent, there was less evidence for improvement in vegetation condition and water quality. In many cases critical levels of intervention had not been reached, interventions were not sufficiently mature to have had any measurable impact, monitoring had not been designed to match the spatial and temporal scales of the interventions, and interventions lacked sufficiently clear objectives and metrics to ever be detectable. In the process, however, new knowledge emerged on disturbance thresholds in river condition, diagnosing sources of pollution in river systems, and the application and uptake of state-and-transition and Bayesian network models to environmental management. The findings discussed in this book provide valuable messages for environmental managers, land managers, researchers and policy makers.
Download or read book The John A Livingston Reader written by John Livingston and published by McClelland & Stewart. This book was released on 2013-03-05 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canada’s pioneering radical naturalist now back in print! John A. Livingston is Canada’s Rachel Carson. His cogent, brilliant writing on the effects of man on nature has defined an entire generation of environmentalists and is required reading for anyone who wants to understand the underpinnings of today’s issues. Radical when first published in the early 1970s and 1980s, Livingston’s arguments that we must find new approaches to our perception of nature and our place within it or face the irreversibility of our destruction of nature now reads prophetically. The Reader brings two of Livingston’s poetic and provocative books back into print for a new generation of readers and features an appreciation by Graeme Gibson.
