Download or read book Forests of the Garden State Classic Reprint written by Richard H. Widmann and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-10 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forests of the Garden State New Jersey's forests, a critical component of the State's natural resources, have been rich in history from colonial settlement to the present. In the Nation's most densely populated State, forests cover 45 percent of New Jersey's land mass and differ greatly in character from the coastal plain to the highlands region. These highly diverse forests provide globally significant biological communities, habitat for wildlife, forestry products, water quality, and opportunities for recreational. Although population growth and expansion into the rural environment have placed increased pressure on the State's forests, management professionals with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection's Forest Service continue to protect this valuable natural resource and provide sound stewardship to ensure that the broad range of benefits derived from these forests will be available to future generations. Download or read book Garden State written by Daniel Birnbaum and published by AADR – Art Architecture Design Research. This book was released on 2016-10-01 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: GARDEN STATE - Cinematic Space and Choreographic Time is the third issue of the SAC JOURNAL and explores the garden as a utopia wherein time and space may be thought of in archi- tectural terms yet not easily deciphered against architecture's traditions and practices. The garden herein is a changeable and vulnerable condition, embodying the ephemerality of life, which in turn contrasts with the customary expectations of architec- ture's longevity. However, Garden State also engages with the contemporary arts, specifically video, cinema and ballet, and with it time and space open up with new, fragile dimensions. A choreographic framework emerges which is at once more precise yet loose, more responsive yet open, than that space architecture normally engenders. Choreographed movement differs from that prescribed by the calculable paths so often invoked in the spatial syntax of latter-day architecture. The garden emerges as a state, in all its social glory, a realm that we already occupy but perhaps never can own? Contributors to this issue include: Daniel Birnbaum, Horst Bredekamp, William Forsythe, Hu Fang, Douglas Gordon, Damjan Jovanovic, Sanford Kwinter, Philippe Pirotte, Louise Neri, Tobias Rehberger, Julia Voss, Mark Wigley and Johan Bettum. Also included are the three finalist projects for 2014 SAC AIV Master Thesis Prize.

Book The Forests Handbook Volume 2

Download or read book The Forests Handbook Volume 2 written by Julian Evans and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2001-03-05 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The future of the world's forests is at the forefront of environmental debate. Rising concerns over the effects of deforestation and climate change are highlighting the need both to conserve and manage existing forests and woodland through sustainable forestry practices. The Forests Handbook, written by an international team of both scientists and practitioners, presents an integrated approach to forests and forestry, applying our present understanding of forest science to management practices, as a basis for achieving sustainability. Volume One presents an overview of the world's forests; their locations and what they are like, the science of how they operate as complex ecosystems and how they interact with their environment. Volume Two applies this science to reality; it focuses on forestry interventions and their impact, the principles governing how to protect forests and on how we can better harness the enormous benefits forests offer. Case studies are drawn from several different countries and are used to illustrate the key points. Development specialists, forest managers and those involved with land and land-use will find this handbook a valuable and comprehensive overview of forest science and forestry practice. Researchers and students of forestry, biology, ecology and geography will find it equally accessible and useful.

Book Saving Sterling Forest

Download or read book Saving Sterling Forest written by Ann Botshon and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the inspiring story of the twenty-five-year-long effort to preserve Sterling Forest, a tract of rugged, upland terrain encompassing twenty thousand acres within the New York–New Jersey Highlands. Barely forty miles northwest of New York City, Sterling Forest seemed destined to suffer the same fate that had befallen thousands of acres of land in this rapidly suburbanizing corridor. The fight to save Sterling Forest brought together one of the largest coalitions of environmental groups and government entities ever assembled. Despite the loose, sometimes fractious nature of the alliance, the coalition managed to extract support from Congress, New York State, New Jersey, and private donors, while at the same time negotiating a contract to purchase the land from the Sterling Forest Corporation, a company that vigorously protected its financial interests at every turn. Deemed by some to be one of the more remarkable environmental victories of the 1990s, the successful outcome of the Sterling Forest struggle—a large state park within easy access of millions of people and a protected supply of water to New Jersey residents—embodied virtually every facet of land-use conflict. It provides a model for saving other areas where critical wild lands are threatened by development.
