Book Forestry Quarterly Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Forestry Quarterly Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forestry Quarterly, Vol. 2 The first volume of the Forestry Quarterly was published under the auspices of the New York State College of Forestry by a board of managers and advisers formed of students, alumni and faculty members of that institution. With its second volume, owing to the closing of the college, the Quarterly enters upon an independent career, being published privately under the direction of a board of editors representing the profession at large and coming from the various centers of professional forestry work. This wider representation in the editorship of the Quarterly will, it is hoped, establish confidence in the authoritative and representative character of the publication, give it greater professional interest, and increase its usefulness in the direction in which the main ambition of the publishers lies, namely, to make it the organ for inter-communication on technical and professional subjects among the rising generation of foresters. With this aim foremost, the editors invite all those in the profession to contribute towards the success of this first professional journal by contributing to its pages and by adding its volumes to their libraries. Besides original articles, of which the publication of at least twelve is expected during the year, special attention will be given to reviews of foreign and home forestry literature. With regard to the foreign literature it is intended to so brief the more important papers as to make reference to the originals as much as possible unnecessary. It is expected to make the journal of interest not only to professional foresters but to all who are actively interested in the management of timber lands, especially lumbermen and those charged with the forestry interests of the various states. Download or read book Forestry Quarterly Vol 1 written by New York State College Of Forestry and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-22 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forestry Quarterly, Vol. 1: October, 1902 If the inhabitants of Germany should leave their country it would be all grown up with woods within a century. Since there would be nobody to use them, the soil would be enriched and the woods would not only increase in size, but in productive power. If, however, the people returned again and made just as large drafts as before for wood, litter and pasturage, the wood lands, even with the best forest management, would again not only be reduced in size, but also become less fertile. Forests form and thrive best where there are no people and hence no forestry, and those are perfectly justified who say Formerly we had no forestry science and enough wood now we have that science, but no wood. One could say with the same justice Those people are health ier who do not need a physician than those who do. But it would not follow that the physicians are to be blamed for the diseases. There would be no physicians if there were no diseases, and no forestry science without deficiency in wood supplies. This science is only a child of necessity or need, and need is therefore its natural concomitant hence the phrase should be: We have now a forestry science because we have a dearth of wood. Forestry, however, does not offer any nostrums and can do nothing against the course of nature. The celebrated physician Verdey said: The good physician lets people die; the poor one kills them. With the same right one can say the good for ester allows the most perfect forests to become less so the poor one spoils them. That is to say, just as the good physician can not hinder that men die because that is the course of nature, so the best forester cannot hinder that the forests, which came to us from past times, become less now they are being utilized. Book Forestry Quarterly Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Forestry Quarterly Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by New York State College of Forestry and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forestry Quarterly, Vol. 1 Although there are a number of publications in the United States and Canada, wholly or in part devoted to the propagandism of forestry, there are at the present time none which are mainly or entirely devoted to the professional or technical interests of the subject. With the establishment, within the last four years, of two fully-equipped special schools of forestry, whose graduates have begun work in the field; with the rapid expansion of the field work of the Federal Forestry Bureau, and of other agencies in technical direction, professional foresters have multiplied, and the time for means of communication among those who are building up the science and art of forestry in the United States seems to have arrived. The Forestry Quarterly is intended to meet this need. Besides publishing original articles on subjects of interest to the profession, and translations of such articles from foreign sources, it is intended to bring reviews and references to the current literature, and also, in brief notes, the news of the forestry world, personal and otherwise, with a view of keeping the readers in touch with the development of their art in all its branches. While this journal, in its inception and management, is a child of the New York State College of Forestry, it is hoped that, as time passes on, its pages may be used by all or any workers in the field for the discussion of their problems and record of their experiences. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forestry Quarterly, Vol. 7 With reference to reforesting burns, one naturally concludes as follows: Where trees grew before and produced a stand of tim ber which was valuable enough to cut for lumber, they may be made to grow again and to produce even more valuable material. On the other hand, it may be well to note that where trees never grew, forest planting is often most eagerly sought by the public. Download or read book Forestry Quarterly Vol 5 Classic Reprint written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-02-02 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forestry Quarterly, Vol. 5 Few states have a greater need for reserve planting and intensive utilization of forest products than New Mexico. Areas capable of supporting high-class timber growth are confined to a few mountain ranges and are small in extent compared with the size of the region dependent upon them. Moreover, the Terri tory is remote from the great forest centers and should be made as self-supporting as possible. Lumber values have risen steadily during the last decade and prices for the better grades are already prohibitive to poor people. Wood of all sorts, including the poorest of the native species used for fuel supply, is in high demand. Careful management which will prevent wasteful utilization of the remaining sup plies and maintain the best possible stands of growing timber will materially benefit the entire Territory. Such action will be of especial benefit to the agriculturists and miners, who form a very large percentage of the population. Water supply is considered the most important factor in future development. Considerable study has been given to this ques tion by the Reclamation Service, various city authorities, and those interested in ranching. Increase in population and further development of natural resources depend very largely upon bet ter regulation and increase of flow, and in more conservative use of the available water. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Quarterly Journal of Forestry, Vol. 1 The Heathen - Although readers of a forestry journal usually know more about the weather than they wish, it is such a characteristic British institution that it would be unpatriotic not to mention it. So far as the North of England is concerned, the summer of 1906 has probably been one of the best for years. Sufficient heat and sufficient moisture, following a cold but not seriously frosty Spring, have produced a growth on all forest trees which we should imagine to be above the average; while newly planted trees which failed to grow had to excuse themselves on other ground than a dry season. In the South, more frosty and droughty conditions prevailed, and for once in a way this part of the country has been less favored than the North. However, it is probably safe to say that while better seasons may have been seen, there have also been a great many worse, and taking things all round, the forester has no serious cause for complaint against the weather of 1906.
