Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forestry and Forest Preservation in Alabama The preservation of the natural resources of a State depends entirely upon the interest the citizens take in the State's welfare. In the evolution of time, conditions are constantly changing, like unto the shifting of the sands of the sea shore. Every new condition presented should be boldly met and looked squarely in the face, and every problem should be fearlessly analyzed and a solution reached that will eventuate in the ultimate good of the whole commonwealth. Book The Timber Supply of the United States Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Timber Supply of the United States Classic Reprint written by R. S. Kellogg and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-25 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Timber Supply of the United States The total quantity of wood cut to obtain the products listed in the table was not less than 20 billion cubic feet. Rapidly-as the population of the United States has increased, the lumber consumption has increased still more rapidly. In round num bers, and allowing for incomplete reports, the lumber cut in 1880 was 18 billion feet; in 1890, 24 billion feet, and in 1900, 35 billion feet. The increase in population from 1880 to 1900 was 52 per cent, but in lumber cut 94 pei cent. The United States is now using annually 400 board feet of lumber per capita while the average for Europe is but 60 feet per capita. Table 2 affords a better understanding of the vast amount of lumber used. This gives the lumber cut of the principal States since 1880. The figures for 1880, 1890, 1900, and 1905 are those compiled by the census; the total cut is estimated by assuming an average out between census dates. This brings the total cut since 1880 to more than 7 00 billion feet - a truly astonishing figure when we stop to consider it. This quantity of lumber would make a floor 1 inch thick over Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Delaware, or an area of square miles. Book The Timber Supply Situation in Georgia Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Timber Supply Situation in Georgia Classic Reprint written by Robert Walter Larson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-08-15 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Timber Supply Situation in Georgia Georgia's forests was completed in 1936. During this period annual production of lumber in Georgia more than doubled. Pulp wood production jumped from cords in 1937 to million cords in 1954. Georgia now produces more pulpwood and lumber than any other State in the South. Since 1936, over 16 million acres of forest land have been put under organized fire protection. Pine trees have been planted on more than one-half million acres. About 8 million acres of forest land have been put under management. During the 19 years that the Naval Stores Conservation Program has been in operation, turpentining practices have steadily improved. To get an accurate measure of the impact of these events on Geor gia's timber supply, a second inventory of the State's forests was begun in July 1950. In November 1953 the last of ground survey plots was taken. The findings of this second survey furnish the back ground for an understanding of the present forest conditions in Georgia and focus attention upon the principal forest problems and what needs to be done to solve them. No attempt is made to fully evaluate the use of forests for wildlife, recreation, or grazing; these uses are dis cussed only as they affect the timber supply. Book National Forest Timber Supply and Stumpage Markets in the Western United States Classic Reprint

Download or read book National Forest Timber Supply and Stumpage Markets in the Western United States Classic Reprint written by Darius Mainard Adams and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from National Forest Timber Supply and Stumpage Markets in the Western United States In the Western United States, National Forests provide nearly 36 percent of total soft wood timber harvest. Because of this significant supply, the auction process through which the rights to harvest National Forest timber are transferred to private firms has received extensive study in the economics and forestry literature. In the context of regional timber supply, however, the timber sale is only the first of several steps in the movement of National Forest timber from woods to mill. A comprehensive under standing of the functioning of regional timber markets and the role of National Forests in a region's timber supply requires some explanation of the disposition of the sold timber, the rates at which the timber is harvested, and the interaction between National Forest and other ownerships resulting from harvest decisions. These post sale elements of National Forest supply have received only limited attention in past research. Book Forestry and Community Development Classic Reprint

Download or read book Forestry and Community Development Classic Reprint written by Samuel Trask Dana and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forestry and Community Development Nowadays the more obvious results of forest devastation, such as fires, increase in soil erosion, and irregularity of stream flow, are pretty generally recognized. But so far comparatively little atten tion has been paid to certain economic and social effects of forest devastation, perhaps less apparent but scarcely less harmful. These are at once an indictment of the system that has made them possible and a challenge to devise a better one. In a very literal sense our civilization has been built on wood. From the forests that once stretched almost unbroken from Maine to Florida, from the immense timber stands of the Lake States, and from those of the Rocky Mountains and Pacific coast has come, in turn, the material needed for the development of farms and the building of homes as settlement pushed ever westward. Unquestion ably, the remarkable progress 'of agriculture has been made possible in large measure by an easily accessible supply of timber. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Products: Lumber, Lath, and Shingles, 1912, Compiled in Cooperation With Department of Agriculture: Forest Service, Henry S. Graves, Forester, Issued December 30, 1913 The greater part of the lumber produced goes into buildings and rough construction, about one-tenth into packing boxes, crates, etc., and much smaller proportions into car construction, furniture, vehi cles, and a great variety of other uses. There is a strong tendency toward more permanent construction in building and toward the use of materials other than wood in many other industries, and the in creasing competition of other materials has doubtless operated to restrict the demand for lumber and to retard the general rise in its price which might be expected to accompany the gradual exhaustion of the available timber supply. During 1907, and especially in the earlier part of that year, the volume of building operations under way was unprecedented, and despite the fact that the business depression which commenced in that year and extended through 1908 affected building operations during the closing months of 1907, lumber mill Operators regarded the situation as but temporary and reduced output did not follow until the continued unfavorable conditions of 1908 destroyed hope of an early improvement. In fact, the production of lumber in 1907 was larger than that reported for any other year except the census year 1909, for which the canvass was more complete, so that the figures are not strictly comparable. The production of 1908, how ever, was less by 7 billion feet, or per cent, than that of 1907. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The School Book of Forestry Our forests, with their billions of trees, are the backbone of agriculture, the skeleton of lum bering, and the heart of industry. Even now, in spite of their depletion, they are the cream of our natural resources. They furnish wood for the nation, pasture for thousands of cattle and sheep, and water supply for countless cities and farms. They are the dominions of wildlife. Millions of birds, game animals, and fish live in the forests and the forest streams. The time is coming when our forests will be the greatest playgrounds of America. It is necessary that we preserve, protect, and expandour timber lands. By so doing we shall provide for the needs of future generations. Book A Paper on Forestry Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Paper on Forestry Classic Reprint written by John D. Lyman and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Paper on Forestry I intend in this paper to further, but briefly, illustrate and enforce a few fundamental principles of forestry of which I have before treated. I am encouraged to do this by the number of groves which I see have been attended to in various and widely-separated sections of the state since this effort in behalf of forestry was commenced; and by the invitations I receive to lecture upon the subject; and letters requesting copies of my paper upon forestry, published in the last report of the Board of Agriculture (my three hundred extra copies are exhausted); and of letters inquiring for information upon certain points. These letters come not only from this and other New England states, but from the central and Western. B. E. Fernow, chief of the division of forestry under our government, says that "the total annual product of wood material of all sorts consumed in the United States may be valued, in round numbers, at one billion ($1,500,000,000) dollars, or, roughly speaking, twenty-five billion (25,000,000,000) cubic feet of wood, the annual increase of five hundred million acres of forest in fair condition. This value exceeds ten times the value of our gold and silver output and three times the annual product of all our mineral and coal mines put together. It is three times the value of our wheat crop, exceeds the gross income of all the railroads and transportation companies, and would more than wipe out the remaining public debt of the United States."
