Book excerpt: This book advances an enactivist theory of aesthetics through the study of inscrutable artworks that challenge us to think because we do not know what to think about them. John M. Carvalho presents detailed analyses a four artworks that share this unique characteristic: Francis Bacon’s Study After Velázquez’s Portrait of Pope Innocent X (1953), the photographs of Duane Michals, based on a retrospective of his work, Storyteller, at the Carnegie Museum of Art (2014), Étant donnés (1968) by Marcel Duchamp, and Jean-Luc Godard’s 1963 film Le Mépris (released in the United States as Contempt). Carvalho argues against the application of theory to derive appreciation or meaning from these artistic works. Rather, each study enacts an embodied cognitive engagement with the specific artworks intended to demonstrate the value of thinking about artworks that might be extended to our engagement with the world in general. This thinking happens, as these studies show, when we trust our embodied skills and their guide to what artworks and the world around us afford for the activation and refinement of those skills. Thinking with Images will be of interest to scholars working in the philosophy of art and philosophical aesthetics, as well as art historians concerned with the meaning and value of contemporary art.

Download or read book Jeff Wall written by Stefan Banz and published by Moderne Kunst Verlag Fur. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his impressive analysis Stefan Banz examines how Jeff Wall uses camera, computer, actors and specialists to generate a visual performance that provokes epistemological questions in the viewer; illustrates how the artist - beyond avant-garde criteria - develops a sophisticated and engaging visual feel, which deals both with the everyday but also with the history of art; and explores meticulously how he reflects the role of the recipient in his compositions. In this sense, Banz shows with the eyes of an active observer how art has an inexhaustible metaphorical power for Wall, which enriches and upsets our visual concepts. And he also creates new, startling references between his photographic works and paintings by such different artists like Diego Velázquez, Jan Vermeer, Claude Monet, Frederic Remington, Hans Emmenegger, Marcel Duchamp and Salvador Dalí.

Book Marcel Duchamp Richard Mutt s Fountain

Download or read book Marcel Duchamp Richard Mutt s Fountain written by Stefan Banz and published by Les presses du réel. This book was released on 2020-07-13 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Marcel Duchamp

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michael R. Taylor
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2009
  • ISBN : 9780876332115
  • Pages : 447 pages

Download or read book Marcel Duchamp written by Michael R. Taylor and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his early thirties, Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968) convinced everyone that he had abandoned making art in favor of playing chess. But from 1946 to 1966, he was secretly at work in his studio on West 14th Street in New York City. There he produced his final masterpiece: Étant donnés: 1o la chute d'eau, 2o le gaz d'éclairage, composed of a battered wood door through which one views a prone, nude female, holding aloft an antique gas lamp against a landscape of trees, waterfall, and sky. Unveiled as a permanent installation at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in July 1969, the year after Duchamp's death, it startled the art world with its explicit eroticism and voyeurism, as well as its trompe l'oeil realism. Since its public debut, Étant donnés has been recognized as one of the most important and enigmatic works of the 20th century. Published to commemorate the fortieth anniversary of the original installation of Étant donnés and to accompany the first major exhibition on the artwork and its studies, this richly illustrated book presents a wealth of new research and documents that draw upon previously unpublished works of art and materials. The catalogue also examines the critical and artistic reception of Étant donnés, as evidenced by the subsequent work of Les Levine, Hannah Wilke, Robert Gober, Marcel Dzama, Ray Johnson, and other artists who have engaged with Duchamp's provocative and challenging tableau-construction.

Book excerpt: Employing superb, clear draughtsmanship this book illustrates each and every detail of the rigging of typical period fore-and-aft vessels.?The rigging of period ship models is arguably the most complex task that any modeller has to accomplish; the intricacies can be daunting and visual references limited. The author's first book, Rigging Period Ship Models, was a triumph of clarity for those needing to decipher the complexities of square rig and has now sold in multiple editions. This book does the same for fore-and-aft craft and deploys three typical eighteenth-century types _ an English cutter, a three-masted French lugger and an American schooner. Some 200 diagrams show clearly where each separate item of standing and running rigging is fitted, led and belayed. Whatever the requirements of the modelmaker, all the information is here.?This new paperback edition brings a visual clarity to the complexities of period rigging and will delight anyone with an interest in the rigging of traditional fore-and-aft craft.
