This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forests and Forestry in the United States The present forest area of the United States is estimated at acres, or something more than square miles.1 This is a little more than one-half the original forest area of the country. The stand of timber is estimated roughly at 746 billion cubic feet, of which 48 5 billion cubic feet is saw timber and 261 billion cubic feet cordwood. Almost three-fourths of the saw timber is in the remaining virgin forests. These remaining virgin forests are chiefly found in two widely separated regions, the South and far West, from which the United States is now drawing the bulk of its lumber cut. Together, they have 85 per cent of the total area still occupied by virgin growth, and 95 per cent of the re maining stand of virgin timber. The area of virgin growth in the far West is twice that in the South, with a stand in the ratio of 3% to 1. But the lumber cut of the South, as compared with that of the far West, is in the ratio of 7 to 6. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Forestry and Arboriculture in Massachusetts Classic Reprint

Download or read book Forestry and Arboriculture in Massachusetts Classic Reprint written by John Robinson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-02-11 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forestry and Arboriculture in Massachusetts Ladies and Gentlemen, - It has been concisely stated in the report of a forest commission of a neighboring State that a wise economy in the use of the natural resources of a country should recognize the fact that certain regions of the earth's surface are adapted by nature to remain covered with forests, and that any attempt to devote such regions to other purposes can only be followed by failure and disaster. Through the work on the forests of the United States, published in connection with the census of 1880, t it is now possible to form a correct estimate of the immense economic value of our forests. In this volume full accounts are given of the four hundred trees which make up our forest flora, and nearly every one is shown to possess some special value or adaptation to special surroundings. A knowledge, too, of the physical importance of the forests, as shown by a careful study of the effect produced by their removal, both in this country and in Europe, is becoming widely disseminated. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Forest Trees The commercial timbers of this country are divided into two classes, hardwoods and softwoods. The division is for convenience, and is sanctioned by custom, but it is not based on the actual hardness and softness of the different woods. The division has, however, a scientific basis founded on the mechanical structures of the two classes of woods, and there is little disagreement among either those who use forest products or manufacture them, or those who investigate the actual structure of the woods themselves, as to which belong in the hardwood and which in the softwood class. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Trees and Forest Scenery In the ensuing pages I have made simple inquiries into the sources of beauty and attractiveness in American forest trees and sylvan scenery. In the concluding chapter by way of contrast; I have given a short account of the esthetic effects of the artificial forests of Europe. The system which shaped these forests and gave them their present appearance should; however, possess more than a comparative interest for Americans. It has, in fact, a further connection though a slight one, with the subject, and therefore requires a few words of explanation. It is well known that in many parts of Europe the forests have long been subjected to a systematic treatment known as forestry. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Forest: Or Uncle Philip's Conversations With the Children About the Trees of America Ah, boys, I hope you will live to know a great deal more than I can teach you. When I was a boy, it was not so easy to learn as it is now; there were not so many schools, and people did not think so much about giving their children a good education, and more than all this, there' were not a quarter so many good books written and printed for young folks as there are now. But seat your selves here in the shade, and I will try to think of something useful to talk about, with you. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Important Timber Trees of the United States: A Manual of Practical Forestry Another feature may cause surprise in the minds of some of my readers. It is not at all improbable that some of the descriptions of trees considered do not agree with the reader's personal observation, and yet such descriptions may well fit the general average of the tree. The character and general appearance of trees are frequently modified to a great extent by location, climate, and soil. Trees of a given species grown in the same vicinity will often vary in form and sometimes in character of wood; therefore a description of the general average will best fit the case, and to give such has been my endeavor. Book Forest Trees of the Pacific Slope Trees Classic Reprint

Download or read book Forest Trees of the Pacific Slope Trees Classic Reprint written by George B. Sudworth and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Trees of the Pacific Slope Trees This volume is the first of four which are to deal with all the native forest trees of North America north of the Mexican boundary. It contains an account of the tree species known to inhabit the Pacific region, 150 in all. Part II will be devoted to the Rocky Mountain trees, Part III to the trees of the southern States, and Part IV to the trees of the northern States. The region covered by Part I includes Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, and California (see maps, frontispiece). Many trees described occur wholly within this region, but none are represented throughout it. A few are found on its southern border and range into Mexico, while three or four trees stretch from within the Pacific region to the Atlantic. The definition of a tree followed by the author includes woody plants having one well-defined stem and a more or less definitely formed crown (but not excluding unbranched cactuses, yuccas, and palms), and attaining somewhere in their natural or planted range a height of at least 8 feet and a diameter of not less than 2 inches. It has been difficult to apply this definition in all cases, for there is no sharp line between some shrub-like trees and some tree-like shrubs. However, though wholly arbitrary, it has been serviceable. A considerable number of species included are, over much of their range, little more than chaparral shrubs, becoming tree-like only in exceptionally favorable places. Recent discoveries in this region have made it necessary to class as trees several species previously regarded as shrubs. Some species are shrubs within this territory, but are trees outside of it. There still remain for further careful consideration several species of Arctostaphylos, Ceanothus, and Styrax, which may prove to be trees. Since this work was prepared solely for the layman, the use of technical terms has been avoided. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
