Book Forest Tree Improvement Research in the Lake States Classic Reprint

Download or read book Forest Tree Improvement Research in the Lake States Classic Reprint written by Paul O. Rudolf and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-11 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Tree Improvement Research in the Lake States In June 1957 the Lake States Forest Tree Improvement Committee directed its Research, Evaluation, Coordination, and Planning (recap) Subcommittee to assemble project summaries for the agencies doing forest tree improvement research in Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. These summaries were to be coordinated with a national sur vey proposed by the Forest Genetics Research Foundation, if the latter were followed up. Later the Foundation decided to confine its report to the West; in November 1958 the report appeared as Forest Genetics Research in the Rocky Mountain and Pacific Coast States and British Columbia. The recap Subcommittee (r. A. Brink, University of Wisconsin; H. L. Mitchell, Forest Products Laboratory; Scott S. Pauley, University of Minnesota; Paul O. Rudolf, Lake States Forest Experiment Station; and Stephen H. Spurr, University of Michigan) directed its chairman to assemble, process, and distribute the report. In the interests of uniformity, it was decided to use the pattern of the Western report. The Lake States report describes 113 research projects being conducted by 11 research agencies. It is believed that this survey gives a reasonably good account of present forest tree improvement research in the Lake States. By showing where we are, it may also help to chart the way we should go. The report is pre sented for the consideration of those conducting or supporting forest tree improve ment research and of others interested in the research that is developing in the Lake States. Book Tree Improvement Research at the Lake City Florida Research Center

Download or read book Tree Improvement Research at the Lake City Florida Research Center written by François Mergen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-08 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tree Improvement Research at the Lake City, Florida, Research Center: A Project Analysis Forest genetics at the Lake City, Florida, Research Center is financed jointly by the Florida Board of Forestry and the U. 8. Forest Service. Another cooperative agreement with the University of Florida's School of Forestry provides for the exchange of technical information on the project and joint use of facilities. Initially this research program was concentrated on the inheritance of gum production, a field in which the basic relationships have now been determined and one in which this project will continue to provide leader ship. Turpentining, however, no longer is the major end product of slash and longleaf pine in this region. Naval stores now is being integrated with other forest use. Therefore, the improvement of growth rate, quality, and resistance to disease and insects must also be considered. It has already been determined that gum yield is correlated with growth rate. Thus, primary emphasis is being given now to improvement of growth and quality, with gum yield as a secondary objective. The Lake City Tree Improvement Project complements correlated research in other southern research centers, i. E. The fundamental south wide studies at the Southern Institute of Forest Genetics, Gulfport, Mississippi; the applied aspects of tree selection and breeding being undertaken cooperatively by the State of Georgia and the Southeastern Forest Experiment Station at Macon and the University of Georgia School of Forestry at Athens, Georgia; the educational and research program in Forest Genetics at the School of Forestry, University of Florida, Gaines ville, Florida; the research and educational program in Forest Genetics of the Texas Forest Service, College Station, Texas; and related projects at Crossett, Arkansas, and elsewhere in the South. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings, Lake States Forest Genetics Conference: March 31-April 1, 1953 This Conference provided an.opportunity (1) for those engaged in forest genetics research to report briefly on what they have done and what they have learned, (2) for those interested to learn the status of such research in the Lake States, and (3) for interested people to point out problems needing study. Out of this Conference there developed the Lake States Forest Tree Improvement Committee, the purpose of which is to encourage and coordinate forest genetics activities in this region. This, I believe, represents a forward step of far-reaching importance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Forest-Wildlife Problems in the Lake States Forests consist of more than trees; they are communities of inter related organisms living together. Trees are only one part of this community. All these organisms influence each other. Considerable study of these inter relationships has been made, but we still do not understand all the basic biological factors that govern them. Our efforts have been concentrated on the more obvious causes and effects. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Forest Planting in the Northeastern and Lake States Classic Reprint

Download or read book Forest Planting in the Northeastern and Lake States Classic Reprint written by United States Forest Service and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-25 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Planting in the Northeastern and Lake States While the need for tree planting has not been felt in New England and the Lake States as keenly as in the treeless West, large areas of land within this region are fit only for forest growth. From an economic standpoint it is important that these lands should be put into a state Of productiveness. Extensive forest planting has thus far been somewhat discouraged by present methods of taxation and in part Of the region by the difficulty in securing adequate protection from fire. The true value of forest land and its rightful place among the permanent resources of the State are, however, becoming recognized, and an enlightened public sentiment is rapidly making this form of investment safe and profitable. This book was released on 2018-10-02 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Resources of the Lake States Region A number of sawmills and other wood - using plants in the Lake States have closed during the past decade, and some concern has been felt for the security of others because of a progressive decline in quantity, quality, and availability of standing timber. A major purpose of the survey, therefore, Was to determine the extent of remaining timber sup plies, the wood requirements of local industries, and the possibilities of meeting these requirements through proper management of the forest resources. Consideration was also given to the possibility of developing new industries to utilize materials hitherto left in the woods or wasted in the logging and milling process. While this report deals primarily with physical resources, the underlying purpose has been to measure the capacity of the forests to contribute to local revenue, employment. And community welfare. Download or read book Forest Planting in the Lake States Classic Reprint written by Joseph Kittredge Jr. and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-08 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Planting in the Lake States The land in need of reforestation to which this bulletin applies (fig. Lies in the northern two-thirds of the States of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. It includes the area north of a line from Saginaw Bay, in Michigan, westward through Sheboygan, Wis, thence northwestward through St. Croix Falls, lwis, to Wadena, Minn, and northward to Thief River Falls and the Canadian bound ary. This is the region from which the famous white pine lumber of the Lake States came, and which more recently has produced and continues to produce a large quantity of sugar maple, eastern hem lock, basswood, yellow birch, beech, spruces, balsam fir, and jack pine. It does not include the southern parts of the three States, where oaks, hickories, and maples are the characteristic trees usually occurring as small woodland areas on farms. The planting prob lems of the southern area of the Lake States are not the same as those of the north; they have already been covered to some extent in several published reports 6, 13, 14, 32, 33, 34, 38, 60, 6-5, 68, 69, The climate, topography, and soil, although varying locally, are for the region as a whole comparably uniform. The precipitation ranges from about 25 inches annually in parts of lower Michigan and western Minnesota to 40 inches in northwestern Wisconsin. For most of the region it is between 30 and 35 inches annually, of which 20 to 25 inches falls during the growing season from April 1 to September 80. The snowfall increases northward and is noticeably heavier and remains on the ground longer in the region of Lake Superior and in northern Minnesota than elsewhere in the region. This book was released on 2018-12-21 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Changing Forests of the Lake and Central States Region To summarize briefly: . Many changes are taking place in the forests of this vast midcontinent region; some are strengthening the forest economy, others should be of cbncern, In the Lake States, the most significant points are the thickening up of forest stands in recent years, the presence of a sizable area of deforested land, the expanding reforestation program, and the stabilized ownership situation, Also of interest are the favorable outlook for aspen in the next two decades, the concern about maintaining conifers, and the expanding supply of oak, Improvement of timber quality is an important need, In the Central States we find, as we did in the Lake States, increases in timber volume and area planted, Of special concern is fire in the Ozarks, regionwide grazing, and the high percentage of low-quality hardwoods, These are all problems to Watch, think about, and act on, Present programs are positive forces tending to shape the future and give reason for-optimism.
