Download or read book Private Forestry Policy in Western Europe written by Arnold John Grayson and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1993 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Private ownership is the main form of tenure of woodlands and forests in Britain and Western Europe. Recent changes in legislation in the UK concerning financial aspects of forest ownership, plus the advent of the single European market, are likely to increase the interest of foreign investment in afforestation. Against this background the Scottish Forestry Trust commissioned a study to examine policies for private forestry across Western Europe. This book is an outcome of this study, which had four main purposes: to describe policy towards private forestry in several European countries; to identify methods of policy formulation and trends in the content and balance of objectives for such policies; to describe methods of implementing policy and quantify the financial implications; and to suggest changes in implementation methods that might be appropriate to Britain. The book is of interest to academics and practitioners concerned with forestry, from the perspectives of economics, policy-making, planning or investment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The main objective of this thesis is to explain the changing conditions on the Japanese market for imported softwood lumber. The three papers focus on three different aspects of the lumber market, allowing us to better understand the processes influencing the softwood lumber market in Japan. In the first paper, the loss of competitiveness in Japanese forestry is discussed and analysed. In the second paper, the lumber trade from 1961 to 1997 is empirically modelled and factors influencing imports of lumber are identified. The third paper concentrates on the growing import of European lumber during the latter part of the 1990s"--Objective.
Download or read book Encyclopedia of Energy Natural Resource and Environmental Economics written by and published by Newnes. This book was released on 2013-03-29 with total page 1056 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every decision about energy involves its price and cost. The price of gasoline and the cost of buying from foreign producers; the price of nuclear and hydroelectricity and the costs to our ecosystems; the price of electricity from coal-fired plants and the cost to the atmosphere. Giving life to inventions, lifestyle changes, geopolitical shifts, and things in-between, energy economics is of high interest to Academia, Corporations and Governments. For economists, energy economics is one of three subdisciplines which, taken together, compose an economic approach to the exploitation and preservation of natural resources: energy economics, which focuses on energy-related subjects such as renewable energy, hydropower, nuclear power, and the political economy of energy resource economics, which covers subjects in land and water use, such as mining, fisheries, agriculture, and forests environmental economics, which takes a broader view of natural resources through economic concepts such as risk, valuation, regulation, and distribution Although the three are closely related, they are not often presented as an integrated whole. This Encyclopedia has done just that by unifying these fields into a high-quality and unique overview. The only reference work that codifies the relationships among the three subdisciplines: energy economics, resource economics and environmental economics. Understanding these relationships just became simpler! Nobel Prize Winning Editor-in-Chief (joint recipient 2007 Peace Prize), Jason Shogren, has demonstrated excellent team work again, by coordinating and steering his Editorial Board to produce a cohesive work that guides the user seamlessly through the diverse topics This work contains in equal parts information from and about business, academic, and government perspectives and is intended to serve as a tool for unifying and systematizing research and analysis in business, universities, and government

Download or read book Forest BioEnergy Production written by Seppo Kellomäki and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-09-12 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For thousands of years, forest biomass or wood has been among the main energy sources of humans around the world. Since the industrial revolution, fossil fuels have replaced wood and become the dominant source of energy. The use of fossil fuels has the disadvantage of increasing atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases (GHGs), especially carbon dioxide (CO2), with the consequent warming of global climate and changes in precipitation. In this context, the substitution of fossil fuels with renewable energy sources like forest biomass is among the ways to mitigate climate change. This book summarizes recent experiences on how to manage forest land to produce woody biomass for energy use and what are the potentials to mitigate climate change by substituting fossil fuels in energy production. In this context, the book addresses how management can affect the supply of energy biomass using short-rotation forestry and the conventional forestry applying long rotations. Furthermore, the book outlines the close interaction between the ecological systems and industrial systems, which controls the carbon cycle between the atmosphere and biosphere. In this context, sustainable forest management is a key to understand and control indirect carbon emissions due to the utilization of forest biomass (e.g. from management, harvesting and logistics, and ecosystem processes), which are often omitted in assessing the carbon neutrality of energy systems based on forest biomass. The focus in this book is on forests and forestry in the boreal and temperate zones, particularly in Northern Europe, where the woody biomass is widely used in the energy industry for producing energy.
