Book The Foraging Behavior of Red cockaded Woodpeckers Picoides Borealis in Stands Intensively Managed for Hardwood Midstory Control on the Daniel Boone National Forest Kentucky

Download or read book The Foraging Behavior of Red cockaded Woodpeckers Picoides Borealis in Stands Intensively Managed for Hardwood Midstory Control on the Daniel Boone National Forest Kentucky written by Franchesca D. Zenitsky and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A small, isolated population of red-cockaded woodpeckers (RCWs) was studied in Kentucky throughout one annual cycle to (1) quantify general foraging behavior of RCWs in Kentucky for comparison with other populations, and to (2) assess the midstory condition and foraging behavior of RCWs in forest stands subjected to various hardwood midstory reduction treatments. Focal individuals were followed continuously from their morning roost exodus until they were either lost or departed from the treatment area. Foraging behavior was quantified based on three foraging methods, five arboreal substrate types, foraging height, tree species, and tree height and dbh. Midstory condition was quantified for both foraging trees and average stand conditions based on understory height, understory stem density, angular canopy closure, and midstory gap. Despite regional habitat differences in topography and availability of pines, RCWs in Kentucky preferred to forage high on large, living pines. Varying degrees of hardwood removal resulted in a continuum of habitat openness. Burning was useful in perpetuating low understory stem heights and densities. The probability of a tree being selected as a foraging substrate was highest for large-dbh pines surrounded by relatively low angular canopy closure. Foraging behavior was least similar among treatments during the breeding season, probably due to central-place foraging constraints. RCWs in the interior highlands of Kentucky readily adapt behaviorally to different midstory conditions by adjusting foraging heights, which tended to be lowest in winter and in stands receiving total reduction of midstory hardwoods.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though small among its woodpecker relatives, the Red-cockaded Woodpecker poses a huge dilemma for its human neighbors. Uniquely adapted to live in the old-growth pine forests of the southeastern United States, the Red-cockaded Woodpecker has nearly disappeared as the forests have been cleared for agricultural, commercial, and residential uses over the last two centuries. Today, it waits at a crossroads. Scientific management practices could restore the woodpecker's habitat and population, but the imperative to convert old-growth forests to other uses remains. In this book, three of the leading experts on the Red-cockaded Woodpecker offer a comprehensive overview of all that is currently known about its biology and natural history and about the ecology of the fire-maintained forests it requires for survival. As the most visible endangered species in the Southeast, and the one whose conservation impacts the largest land area, the Red-cockaded Woodpecker holds a compelling interest not only for ornithologists, but also for wildlife managers, foresters, developers, environmentalists, and government officials. For all of these groups, this book will be the essential resource for learning more about the Red-cockaded Woodpecker and ensuring its survival.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Populations of the red-cockaded woodpecker (Picoides borealis) have experienced massive declines since European colonization of North America. This is due to extensive habitat loss and alteration. Logging of old-growth pine forests and alteration of the fire regime throughout the historic range of the species were the primary causes of population decline. Listing of the red-cockaded woodpecker under the Endangered Species Act of 1973, as amended, and increased emphasis on management of non-game species have resulted in efforts to recover remnant populations of the red-cockaded woodpecker in many parts of its historic range. Due to extensive research and adaptive management initiatives much is now known about the elements required for both short- and long-term management of viable populations of red-cockaded woodpeckers. A short-term strategy is crucial because currently available habitat, in nearly all populations, is poor in 1 or more critical respects. Consequently, almost all populations require immediate attention in the short term, to insure suitable midstory and understory conditions, adequate availability of suitable cavities, and restoration of demographic viability through improvements in number and distribution of breeding groups. Management techniques including artificial cavities, cavity entrance restrictors, translocation of birds, prescribed fire, and mechanical and chemical control of woody vegetation are available to achieve these needs. In the long term, cost-effective management of red-cockaded woodpecker populations requires a timber management program and prescribed fire regime that will produce and maintain the stand structure characteristic of high quality nesting and foraging habitat, so that additional intensive management specific to the woodpeckers is no longer necessary. Timber management that achieves this goal and still allows substantial timber harvest is feasible. The implementation of a red-cockaded woodpecker management strategy, as outlined above, represents appropriate ecosystem management in the fire-maintained pine ecosystems of the southeastern United States and will ultimately benefit a great number of additional species of plants and animals adapted to this ecosystem.
