Download or read book Forest Resources of the Lake States Region Classic Reprint written by Russell Nelson Cunningham and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-02 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Resources of the Lake States Region A number of sawmills and other wood - using plants in the Lake States have closed during the past decade, and some concern has been felt for the security of others because of a progressive decline in quantity, quality, and availability of standing timber. A major purpose of the survey, therefore, Was to determine the extent of remaining timber sup plies, the wood requirements of local industries, and the possibilities of meeting these requirements through proper management of the forest resources. Consideration was also given to the possibility of developing new industries to utilize materials hitherto left in the woods or wasted in the logging and milling process. While this report deals primarily with physical resources, the underlying purpose has been to measure the capacity of the forests to contribute to local revenue, employment. And community welfare. This book was released on 2018-12-21 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Changing Forests of the Lake and Central States Region To summarize briefly: . Many changes are taking place in the forests of this vast midcontinent region; some are strengthening the forest economy, others should be of cbncern, In the Lake States, the most significant points are the thickening up of forest stands in recent years, the presence of a sizable area of deforested land, the expanding reforestation program, and the stabilized ownership situation, Also of interest are the favorable outlook for aspen in the next two decades, the concern about maintaining conifers, and the expanding supply of oak, Improvement of timber quality is an important need, In the Central States we find, as we did in the Lake States, increases in timber volume and area planted, Of special concern is fire in the Ozarks, regionwide grazing, and the high percentage of low-quality hardwoods, These are all problems to Watch, think about, and act on, Present programs are positive forces tending to shape the future and give reason for-optimism. Book Forest Planting in the Northeastern and Lake States Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2019-01-25 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Planting in the Northeastern and Lake States While the need for tree planting has not been felt in New England and the Lake States as keenly as in the treeless West, large areas of land within this region are fit only for forest growth. From an economic standpoint it is important that these lands should be put into a state Of productiveness. Extensive forest planting has thus far been somewhat discouraged by present methods of taxation and in part Of the region by the difficulty in securing adequate protection from fire. The true value of forest land and its rightful place among the permanent resources of the State are, however, becoming recognized, and an enlightened public sentiment is rapidly making this form of investment safe and profitable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Planting in the Lake States The land in need of reforestation to which this bulletin applies (fig. Lies in the northern two-thirds of the States of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. It includes the area north of a line from Saginaw Bay, in Michigan, westward through Sheboygan, Wis, thence northwestward through St. Croix Falls, lwis, to Wadena, Minn, and northward to Thief River Falls and the Canadian bound ary. This is the region from which the famous white pine lumber of the Lake States came, and which more recently has produced and continues to produce a large quantity of sugar maple, eastern hem lock, basswood, yellow birch, beech, spruces, balsam fir, and jack pine. It does not include the southern parts of the three States, where oaks, hickories, and maples are the characteristic trees usually occurring as small woodland areas on farms. The planting prob lems of the southern area of the Lake States are not the same as those of the north; they have already been covered to some extent in several published reports 6, 13, 14, 32, 33, 34, 38, 60, 6-5, 68, 69, The climate, topography, and soil, although varying locally, are for the region as a whole comparably uniform. The precipitation ranges from about 25 inches annually in parts of lower Michigan and western Minnesota to 40 inches in northwestern Wisconsin. For most of the region it is between 30 and 35 inches annually, of which 20 to 25 inches falls during the growing season from April 1 to September 80. The snowfall increases northward and is noticeably heavier and remains on the ground longer in the region of Lake Superior and in northern Minnesota than elsewhere in the region. Book Forest Resources of South Georgia Classic Reprint

Download or read book Forest Resources of South Georgia Classic Reprint written by Mark Morris Lehrbas and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Resources of South Georgia Open waterways and narrow shoestring lake are to be found in all parts of the swamp. The Suwannee River originates in the western part of the swamp and flows southwest into the Gulf of Mexico, while the St. Marys River emerges from the southeast corner and flows into the Atlantic Ocean. The Okefenokee Swamp was largely unsurveyed State property until 1889, when the State land was sold to the Suwannee. Canal Co., which attempted to drain and reclaim the area. This gigantic task, known as jackson's Folly, was abandoned in the middle nineties as unsound, and the timber re sources were placed on the market. Approximately acres, including the major portion of the swamp, were purchased by a large lumber company that began logging operations about 1910. From then' until 1926, when active operations ceased, approximately 400 million board feet of cypress and about 60 million board feet of pine were removed. No blackgum was logged, and it was believed that over 100 million board feet were left standing in the areas cut for cypress. Since 1926, several small companies have successfully Operated in the smaller and more sparsely stocked stands bordering the swamp, and the cutting of cypress railroad ties has long been an activity along the outer rim. A severe fire which swept the swamp in the spring of 1932 and destroyed much of the residual stand caused particularly heavy damage in the western part, where well over one-third of the blackgum was said to be destroyed. The Bureau of Biological Survey, United States Department of the Interior, has recently acquired approximately acres, to be administered as a game and bird refuge. Here the unique and interesting natural conditions can be studied and the vanishing bird and animal life protected and preserved for future generations. Book Forestry Pamphlets Classic Reprint

Download or read book Forestry Pamphlets Classic Reprint written by University Of Montana and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 996 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forestry Pamphlets The notes presented in this bulletin, when added to the bulletin Summer Birds of Flathead Lake, University of Montana Biological Series No. 1, include the work on ornithology during the summers of 1900, 1901, 1902 and 1903. Three seasons having been spent in the Mission Mountains, on the Flathead Indian Reservation, and along the shores of Flathead lake, it was thought best to extend the observations in the summer of 1903. Prin. Silloway was therefore recommended to spend a portion of the time in the vicinity of Swan lake. This lake is a beautiful sheet of water, cradled between two ranges of mountains, with wooded slopes to the water's edge. It is primitively wild, with miles of woodland, interspersed occasionally with open glades. Only a few hardy pioneers have entered the region. The birds have thus not been molested by man, and a visit to the region gave opportunity for study not heretofore made. The illustrations here given are as faithful a portrayal of the region about Swan lake as can be made with the camera. Plate LIII shows the region to the southeast, with the Mission range in the background. The mountain slopes to the low summits are covered with a dense forest. Bordering the lake may be seen a fringe of willows, back of which are the cottonwoods and alders, and lastly the conifers. A large area border ing the water is swampy, shown in Plates LIV and LV. It is exceedingly difficult to get around in this region. Plate LVI shows the location of the lake with regard to the mountains, while Plate LVII shows a large por tion of the wooded valley south of and above the lake. With the excep tion of a section of country including the lower portion of the lake as shown in Plate LV all of the country shown in the photographs is in the Lewis and Clarke forest reserve.
