This book was released on 2018-01-14 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Forests, Forest Lands, and Forest Products of Eastern North Carolina, Vol. 5 The law inaugurating the Geological Survey provides for the investigation of the timber as well as the mineral interests of the State and in carrying out this provision a systematic examination of the forests was begun in 1891 and has been carried on since that time. The plan adopted in this work embodies a fourfold investigation: first, as to the existing forest resources; second, as to how these resources can be utilized to the greatest advantage with out involving the destruction of the forests; third, as to how the waste lands of the State can be continuously restocked with valua ble trees, and thus our forest wealth perpetuated; and fourth, as to what can be done to encourage the development in the State of enterprises which will manufacture into finished products a larger portion of our timber instead of shipping to other States our crude. Materials for manufacture there. We have found, as will be shown in this Report and others which are to follow at an early date, that our forest resources are. Considerable: and they are now attracting lumbermen and capital from many sections of the country. The lumbering industry in the State is already a large one and is increasing in magnitude; indeed, already the timber is being cut with such rapidity that we mav fairly ask ourselves the question, how long it will be before our forest wealth, like that of many other States, becomes a matter of the past. And we mav also ask ourselves the question, whether it is possible that these resources can be utilized now and at the same time our forest wealth be perpetuated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Forests, Forest Lands, and Forest Products of Eastern North Carolina The policy of the average citizen appears to be based upon the theory that our natural resources are inexhaustible, and that we should get all out of them we can to-day and let the future take care of itself. And so thoroughly grounded are these notions in our public and private policy that it is exceedingly difficult to secure the adoption of any plan which runs counter to them. But fortunately, in the matter of our forests, their preservation for use by a future generation need not prohibit the utilization of the valuable timber now standing by the present generation. It only demands that while we cut and make use of this timber we protect the young growth, and look to the restocking of our waste lands with valuable trees, pnd thus make the forest valuable for future generations also. This book was released on 2018-01-10 with total page 968 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Approximate Forest Area and Timber Volume by Country in the Carolinas and Virginia: A Forest Survey Progress Report, April 1, 1945 This report, giving the approximate forest area and timber volume in each county of the Carolinas and Virginia, is based upon field surveys made as a part of the inventory phase of the Forest Survey at the Appa lachian Forest Experiment Station. In the East the nation - wide Forest Survey did not plan to release information for areas smaller than survey units (four to ten.mi11ion acres), but the demand for forest statistics by counties has shown a marked increase as planning for post - war develop ment becomes more intense with the gradual approach of victory. To meet this demand the original Forest Survey statistics for survey units with in states have been recomputed to provide estimates of forest area and timber volumes by counties, and are presented in this report as a series of three statistical tables for each state. The figures are as of the date of the original survey, and no attempt has been made to correct them.for recent changes in forest area or annual timber growth and drain. In South Carolina the data are for 1936, in North Carolina for 1938, and in Virginia for 1940. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Fires in North Carolina During 1914: And Forestry Laws of North Carolina Extremely dry weather has often been spoken of as a frequent cause of forest fires. This, however, is a misapprehension. Dry weather can no more cause a fire in the woods than a loaded gun can cause the death of a friend. It is the careless individual in both cases who causes the trouble. If carelessness could be eliminated, the forest fire caused by dry weather and the death caused by the gun which was not loaded would not occur. Book The Forest Resources of New Hampshire Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Forest Resources of New Hampshire Classic Reprint written by Edwin van Horn Larson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-14 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Forest Resources of New Hampshire Through the mcsweeney-mcnary Act of 1928, Congress authorized the Secretary of Agriculture to conduct a comprehensive survey of the forest resources of the United States. This work was assigned to the Forest Service. The purposes of this forest survey are (1) to make a field inventory of the present supply of standing timber; (2) to ascertain its current rate of growth, (3) to determine how much it is being reduced through industrial and domestic uses, fire, and other causes, (4) to estimate the present consumption and the probable future trends in requirements for forest products, and (5) to interpret and cor relate these findings so that they may be useful in formulating private and public forest policies. Results of this first comprehensive survey of the forest resources of New Hampshire are reported here. However, other estimates of the State 3 forest inventory have been made in the past, the most recent being the Reappraisal of 1945, which was made by the Forest Service in cooperation with the American Forestry Associa ion These previous estimates were based largely on general knowledge and on the judgment of informed persons; the present survey is based on a scientifically designed procedure using aerial photographs and ground plots. Furthermore, some specifications used in this report are different from those used in previous studies. For these reasons changes in forest conditions in New Hampshire cannot be determined by comparing this report with previ ous estimates. Valid comparisons of changing forest conditions in New Hampshire will be possible when the same area is resurveyed in the future.
