Book What Forestry Means to Representative Men

Download or read book What Forestry Means to Representative Men written by American Forest Congress and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-11 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from What Forestry Means to Representative Men: Portions of Addresses Delivered at the American Forest Congress, Washington, January 3 to 6, 1905 The producers, the manufacturers, and the great common carriers of the nation have long failed to realize their true and Vital relation to the great forests Of the United States, and the forests and indus tries both suffered through that failure. The suffering Of the indus tries in such case comes after the destruction Of the forests, but it is just as inevitable as that destruction. If the forest is destroyed it is only a question Of a relatively short time before the business inter ests suffer in consequence. All of you know that there is opportunity in any new country for the development of the type of temporary inhabitant whose idea is to skin the country and go somewhere else. You all know, and especially those of you from the West, the individual whose idea of developing the country is to out every stick of timber Off Of it, and then leave a barren desert for the home-maker who comes in after him. That man is a curse and not a blessing to the country. The prop Of the country must be the business man who intends so to run his business that it will be profitable for his children after him. That is the type Of business that it is worth while to develop. The time of indifference and misunderstanding is gone by. Your coming is a very great step toward the solution of the forest problem a problem which can not be settled until it is settled right, and it can not be settled right until the forces which bring that settlement about come not from the Government, not even from the newspapers and from public sentiment in general, but from the active, intelligent, and effective interest Of the men to whom the forest is important from a business point of view, because they use it and its products, and whose interest is therefore concrete instead of general and diffuse. It was only a few years ago that the practical lumberman felt that the forest expert was a man who wished to see the forests pre served as bric-a-brac, and the American business man was not pre pared to do much from the bric-a-brac standpoint. Now, I think we have got a working agreement between the forester and the business man whose business is the use Of the forest. We have got them to come together with the understanding that they must work for a common end, work to see the forest preserved for use. The great significance Of this congress comes from the fact that hence forth the movement for the conservative use of the forest is to come mainly from within, not from without; from the men who are actively interested in the use of the forest in one way or another, even more than from those whose interest is philanthropic and general. Book The Timber Supply of the United States Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Timber Supply of the United States Classic Reprint written by R. S. Kellogg and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-25 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Timber Supply of the United States The total quantity of wood cut to obtain the products listed in the table was not less than 20 billion cubic feet. Rapidly-as the population of the United States has increased, the lumber consumption has increased still more rapidly. In round num bers, and allowing for incomplete reports, the lumber cut in 1880 was 18 billion feet; in 1890, 24 billion feet, and in 1900, 35 billion feet. The increase in population from 1880 to 1900 was 52 per cent, but in lumber cut 94 pei cent. The United States is now using annually 400 board feet of lumber per capita while the average for Europe is but 60 feet per capita. Table 2 affords a better understanding of the vast amount of lumber used. This gives the lumber cut of the principal States since 1880. The figures for 1880, 1890, 1900, and 1905 are those compiled by the census; the total cut is estimated by assuming an average out between census dates. This brings the total cut since 1880 to more than 7 00 billion feet - a truly astonishing figure when we stop to consider it. This quantity of lumber would make a floor 1 inch thick over Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Delaware, or an area of square miles. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canadian Forestry Journal, Vol. 1: January, 1905 Canada has from the beginning of her history been noted for the extent and riches of her forests, and the lumber industry has been one of the leading branches of her manifold activities, and has developed with her growth, forming a principal contributor to the domestic and export trade of the country, giving employ ment to a large section of the population, developing a healthy and sturdy class of men, and adding to the wealth and prosperity of the Dominion. At the same time the revenue received by some of the provincial governments directly from the forest has been one of the largest sources of income, and has rendered a re sort to direct taxation in any other form almost altogether un necessary. The export of domestic forest products for the last fiscal year was $3 In Ontario and Quebec the usual revenue from woods and forests is from a million and a quarter to a million and a half dollars each year, and in the other pro vinces which control their own timber lands the revenue is stead ily on the increase. In New Brunswick, during 1903, it was In British Columbia the revenue for the present year was estimated at and it will probably be much larger. The total value of forest products, as stated by the Census of 1901, is for the census year, European students of forestry, who have been forced by the condition of affairs on that continent to give the wood supply careful thought, have sounded a note of alarm as to the future.
