At first glance it seems strange that they would ask such questions. After all, the mine-timber market is a traditional outlet for wood products in the Appalachians, and it would seem that all sawmill operators in the region would be familiar with the market. Even those who sell mine timbers know little about the coal industry's current and potential need for mine timbers, because they generally supply only one or two mines. Book excerpt: For every ton of coal they produce, the larger underground coal mines in the territory of the Birmingham Branch of the Southern Forest Experiment Station use more than three-fourths of a cubic foot of wood. Underground iron ore mines in the same area use one-fourth of a cubic foot per ton of output. In 1945, these coal and ore mines used about one-fifth of the 80 million cubic feet of timber products harvested in the Birmingham territory. Wood is needed in all underground mining operations in this territory. It supports the roof of the seam. It is used to build cars for transporting coal and ore, and it carries the rails for these cars. It is made into partitions for controlling ventilating air currents. It goes into necessary above-ground structures. For these and many other uses, wood has no economical substitute.

The singing activity of birds declines during late-morning periods, which can affect estimates of abundance and conclusions regarding vegetative conditions indexed by birds. Therefore, it is important to quantify periods of bird activity so biologists can plan studies. We determined hourly detections from singing males of 22 nongame bird species in ponderosa pine, quaking aspen, and grassland vegetation types in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Detections of 12 of 22 species differed among 1-hr intervals after sunrise. Detections of yellowrumped warblers, Townsend's solitaires, red-breasted nuthatches, western tanagers, and American robins decreased on count-episodes more than 4 hrs after sunrise. Detections of dusky flycatchers declined on count-episodes more than 3 hrs after sunrise and detections of black-capped chickadees were greatest during the first hour after sunrise and declined afterward. Detections of many other species from songs or calls decreased on count-episodes more than 5 hrs after sunrise. We recommend that bird counts in the Black Hills be completed within 4 hrs after sunrise so estimates of bird abundance are not affected by reduced singing among males.
