This book was released on 2018-01-08 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Planting in the Lake States The land in need of reforestation to which this bulletin applies (fig. Lies in the northern two-thirds of the States of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. It includes the area north of a line from Saginaw Bay, in Michigan, westward through Sheboygan, Wis, thence northwestward through St. Croix Falls, lwis, to Wadena, Minn, and northward to Thief River Falls and the Canadian bound ary. This is the region from which the famous white pine lumber of the Lake States came, and which more recently has produced and continues to produce a large quantity of sugar maple, eastern hem lock, basswood, yellow birch, beech, spruces, balsam fir, and jack pine. It does not include the southern parts of the three States, where oaks, hickories, and maples are the characteristic trees usually occurring as small woodland areas on farms. The planting prob lems of the southern area of the Lake States are not the same as those of the north; they have already been covered to some extent in several published reports 6, 13, 14, 32, 33, 34, 38, 60, 6-5, 68, 69, The climate, topography, and soil, although varying locally, are for the region as a whole comparably uniform. The precipitation ranges from about 25 inches annually in parts of lower Michigan and western Minnesota to 40 inches in northwestern Wisconsin. For most of the region it is between 30 and 35 inches annually, of which 20 to 25 inches falls during the growing season from April 1 to September 80. The snowfall increases northward and is noticeably heavier and remains on the ground longer in the region of Lake Superior and in northern Minnesota than elsewhere in the region. • Pages : 314 pages

Download or read book The Forests of Michigan written by Donald Dickmann and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No book currently on bookstore shelves explores, as The Forests of Michigan does, the natural history, ecology, management, economic importance, and use of the rich and varied forests that cover about half of the state's 36.3 million acres. The authors look at the forests, where they are, how they got to be, and their present-day usage, using the story of Michigan forests as a backdrop for the state's history, including its archaeology. The Forests of Michigan explores how the forests came back after the great Wisconsin glacier began to recede over 12,000 years ago, and how they recovered from the onslaught of unrestrained logging and wildfire that, beginning in the mid-1800s, virtually wiped them out. The emphasis of the book is on sustaining for the long term the forests of the state, with a view of sustainability that builds not only upon the lessons learned from native peoples' attitude and use of trees but also on the latest scientific principles of forest ecology and management. Generously illustrated and written in an engaging style, The Forests of Michigan sees the forest and the trees, offering both education and delight. "As forest scientists," the authors note, "we opted for a hearty serving of meat and potatoes; anyone who reads this book with the intention of learning something will not be disappointed. Nonetheless, we do include some anecdotal desserts, too." Donald I. Dickmann is Professor of Forestry at Michigan State University and holds a doctorate from the University of Wisconsin. He is the author of The Culture of Poplars. Larry A. Leefers is Associate Professor in the Department of Forestry at Michigan State University. He holds a doctorate from Michigan State University.

Book The Forests Handbook Volume 1

Download or read book The Forests Handbook Volume 1 written by Julian Evans and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The future of the world's forests is at the forefront of environmental debate. Rising concerns over the effects of deforestation and climate change are highlighting the need both to conserve and manage existing forests and woodland through sustainable forestry practices. The Forests Handbook, written by an international team of both scientists and practitioners, presents an integrated approach to forests and forestry, applying our present understanding of forest science to management practices, as a basis for achieving sustainability. Volume One presents an overview of the world's forests; their locations and what they are like, the science of how they operate as complex ecosystems and how they interact with their environment. Volume Two applies this science to reality; it focuses on forestry interventions and their impact, the principles governing how to protect forests and on how we can better harness the enormous benefits forests offer. Case studies are drawn from several different countries and are used to illustrate the key points. Development specialists, forest managers and those involved with land and land-use will find this handbook a valuable and comprehensive overview of forest science and forestry practice. Researchers and students of forestry, biology, ecology and geography will find it equally accessible and useful.

Book Rock N Roll Gold Rush

    Book Details:
  • Author : Maury Dean

  • Release : 2003
  • ISBN : 0875862071
  • Pages : 728 pages

Download or read book Rock N Roll Gold Rush written by Maury Dean and published by Algora Publishing. This book was released on 2003 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monster Rock-n-Roll survey focuses on the songs and the vibrant personalities who create them, for college audiences and the general public. Dean published the world's first history of Rock in 1966. Here, in his ebullient style, he buzzes through piles of musical singles from the whole last half century, describing what is fun about each major and minor hit, pointing out what elements were exciting or new or significant in the development of musical styles. He relates some tantalizing tidbits about the earlier musical heritage that artists have drawn upon in crafting ever more amazing evolutions of rock music. This snappy, witty and informative album has universal appeal, doubling as a coffee-table trivia treasure and a college-level popular music history text. It includes hundreds of photos, chapter questions, and an extensive index. Reader-friendly and informationally complete, it covers soft rock, heavy metal, rhythm & blues, country rock and classic oldies, all with tender loving care, for the specialist and casual listener alike. Its mini-portraits of the artists who move so many hearts (and feet), the photos and the insightful sound bites get to the essence of each song and each musician's contribution to the music of our age. The single-song focus makes the book unique. It's a playlist for R'n'R professors and the general public, written with a collegiate vocabulary, tight organization and a respect for all. "Hearing Elvis for the first time was like busting out of jail." - Bob Dylan That being said, no one is being incited, here, to bust out of jail or to emulate the quixotic habits of rock stars. "There's nothing in here to hide from the kids, the clergy or grandma." Gold Rush can be used as a university or community college text, but most people will grab it for the sheer pleasure of reading about everyone's favorites. Great gift for Rock enthusiasts. Gold Rush is the first book of its kind to feature a celebration of the great single songs of the rock era and beyond. Gold Rush takes thousands of songs, spanning three centuries, and brings them back uniquely as if they came out just yesterday. Gold Rush unites the Anglo-American and later worldwide spirit of Rock and Roll in a tapestry of interconnected melodies and adventures. As Leonard Maltin's Movie Guide helps you select videos at Blockbuster, so Gold Rush is a powerful playlist for your music collection, with many new and fascinating photos of favorite stars. Gold Rush explains the most important stories behind the songs you picked to be played, the songs that 'went gold,' from the 1897 Alaska/Klondike Gold Rush to the #1 songs of today and beyond.
