Book The Private Forest Landowners of Michigan Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Private Forest Landowners of Michigan Classic Reprint written by Eugene M. Carpenter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-09 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Private Forest Landowners of Michigan In summary, we found that three-quarters of the assisted owners live within 25 miles of their forest, and they control 63 percent of the acreage held by assisted owners. General forest management and sales and valuation assistance account for over half of the kind of help requested. About 15 percent of the assisted owners are nonresidents, and they control nearly 30 percent of the acreage held by assisted owners. When the proportions for number of assisted own ers and acres owned are analyzed by kind of assis tance and owner characteristics the results are sim ilar to those reported by Webster and Stoltenberg The variables age, occupation, education, and income are highly correlated in various ways. For example, professionals and executives are also likely to be college graduates and to have higher average incomes. The tables show the proportions of owners by kind of assistance requested as dis tributed over the entire population of assisted owners and (in parentheses) the distribution within a specific class or column (tables 44 to Retired people (hence, also the older age class group) have ahigh proportion of forestry activity relative to their proportion in the overall population. Because no time limit was placed on the reporting of assistance, some could have been carried out prior to retire ment. Planting and sales and valuation assistance were important activities for these owners. General management assistance stands out for professional people, executives, and white collar workers, as well as the and over income gr0up. There is an interesting contrast between. The pro portions of professional owners and executive own ers assisted (table Relative to their proportions in the overall population, professionals are much more active than executives (17 percent to 7 per cent). Possibly executives are more aware of alterna tive investment opportunities that promise higher returns on investment and thus choose not to prac tice more intensive forest management; or perhaps they simply are less well informed about the availability of forestry assistance. On an acres owned basis, there is not much difference between the two classes. Thus, executives with larger proper ties are more responsive. Book Forest Management Lessons from a 1949 Windstorm in Northern Wisconsin and Upper Michigan Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Management Lessons From a 1949 Windstorm in Northern Wisconsin and Upper Michigan On October 10, 1949, an unusually severe Windstorm struck Wisconsin and the western half of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It caused heavy damage to the forests by uprooting, breaking, splitting, or tipping trees. Windstorms such as this inflict unpredictable losses in the forest and upset management plans, especially calculations of allowable cut. With some storms, such as the September 1938 hurricane which struck the New England States, tremendous damage results and probably few, if any, practical lessons can be learned about modifying forestry practices to mater lally reduce damage that might be caused in the future by other Windstorms. The Windstorm of October 10, 1949, was not in this class but was mild enough to provide an Opportunity for an overall survey. The conclusions drawn from this survey have certain practical applications for the manager of forest lands, especially where timber marking guides and policies are concerned. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Michigan-Forestry Commission: For the Years 1907-1908 We have successfully maintained that it is a proper function of the State to own a permanent forest domain upon which shall forever be protected a permanent forest cover. While the Commission has not, from limitation of funds, accomplished very much in practical for estry, it has strengthened the argument for State forestry in its con duct of a small area devoted to growing State forests by protecting it from the devastation of fire in an economical manner; it has demon strated that on abandoned lands, which after years of experience the State could not dispose of, it can grow timber, and through the salvage of what would otherwise be worse than waste because food for fire, the Commission has furnished an object lesson, better than any carefully studied argument, in favor of utilizing the waste lands of the State for the development of a permanent forest cover. Even in the meager results from actual planting in the open, the Commission has also demonstrated something of the possibilities of con ducting forestry on waste lands by.
