The difficulty has been to write in a popular style so as to interest the general reader, and induce him to further follow his studies of the wonders of Natural History, yet at the same time to define the characteristics of the insects described and give some idea of their classification, so that it will not lose its value as a d104 Book to the student while enlarging the circle of its readers. Since the year 1770, when Sir Joseph Banks captured the first diamond beetle on the sandy shores of Botany Bay, the majority of our insects have been described in rare old English or foreign publications, the Zoology of Voyages and Travels, or the Transactions and Proceedings of Scientific Societies consisting of many hundreds of volumes written in many different languages. Many of these original descriptions, written in English or Latin, are so brief and obscure that without seeing the type they are quite unintelligible even to the trained entomologist, and therefore are absolutely of no value to the beginner. Book excerpt: Losses of forests and their insect inhabitants are a major global conservation concern, spanning tropical and temperate forest regions throughout the world. This broad overview of Australian forest insect conservation draws on studies from many places to demonstrate the diversity and vulnerability of forest insects and how their conservation may be pursued through combinations of increased understanding, forest protection and silvicultural management in both natural and plantation forests. The relatively recent history of severe human disturbance to Australian forests ensures that reasonably natural forest patches remain and serve as 'models' for many forest categories. They are also refuges for many forest biota extirpated from the wider landscapes as forests are lost, and merit strenuous protection from further changes, and wider efforts to promote connectivity between otherwise isolated remnant patches. In parallel, the recent attention to improving forest insect conservation in harmony with insect pest management continues to benefit from perspectives generated from better-documented faunas elsewhere. Lessons from the northern hemisphere, in particular, have led to revelations of the ecological importance and vulnerability of many insect taxa in forests, together with clear evidence that 'conservation can work' in concert with wider forest uses. A brief outline of the variety of Australian tropical and temperate forests and woodlands, and of the multitude of endemic and, often, highly localised insects that depend on them highlights needs for conservation (both of single focal species and wider forest-dependent radiations and assemblages). The ways in which insects contribute to sustained ecological integrity of these complex ecosystems provide numerous opportunities for practical conservation.

The result of my researches may form a not uninteresting addition to the small stock of knowledge at present possessed by entomologists with regard to this striking but neglected group. Of the extent of this knowledge, and its gradual development, some idea may be formed from the following outline of what has been written upon the subject since the days of Linnaeus, who first placed these insects in the genus Gryllus, but afterwards removed them to that of Mantis. In this latter mode of arrangement he was followed by Gmelin, and by Fabricius in his earlier publications; but in the year 1787, Stoll, in his 'Representations exactement coloriees dapres Nature des Spectres, ' &c, proposed to form the Spectres into a distinct family (genus) from Mantis. To this genus, in the commencement of his work, he gave the name of Spectrum: at the end, however, he gave a list of the species figured by him from various Dutch collections, and amounting in number to 27, with Latin specific names, to which he prefixed the generic appellation of Phasma. He divided the genus thus formed into two families, characterized as follows: "1.Les pieds anterieurs plus longs que les posterieurs; le corps tout a fait cylindrique. "2.Le corps plat; les pieds anterieurs plus courts que les posterieurs. Dans quelques especes les femellesont les etuis aussi longs que les ailes.
