Book Forest Pest and Disease Management in Latin America

Download or read book Forest Pest and Disease Management in Latin America written by Sergio A. Estay and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-02-26 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By providing multiple economic goods and ecosystem services, Latin American forests play a key role in the environmental, social and economic welfare of the region’s countries. From the tropical forests of Central America to the Mediterranean and temperate vegetation of the southern cone, these forests face a myriad of phytosanitary problems that negatively impact on both conservation efforts and forest industry. This book brings together the perspectives of several Latin American researchers on pest and disease management. Each chapter provides modern views of the status and management alternatives to problems as serious as the impact of introduced exotic insects and diseases on Pinus and Eucalyptus plantations throughout the continent, and the emergence of novel insect outbreaks in tropical and temperate native forests associated with global warming. It is a valuable guide for researchers and practitioners working on forest health in Latin America and around the world.

Book Impacts Monitoring and Management of Forest Pests and Diseases

Download or read book Impacts Monitoring and Management of Forest Pests and Diseases written by Young-Seuk Park and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-03-16 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest pests have diverse negative impacts on forestry economy, ecosystem services, biodiversity, and sustainable ecosystem management. The first step towards effectively managing forest pests would be to monitor their occurrence and assess their impact on forest ecosystems. The monitoring results can provide basic information for effective management strategies. The data from monitoring programs can result in the development of new methods for monitoring, assessing impact, and developing management techniques. This special issue aims to share information to assist in the effective management of forest pests, by understanding the responses of forest pests to natural and anthropogenic changes, and discussing new studies on the monitoring, assessment, and management of forest pests. The fourteen papers included in this issue focus on monitoring, assessing, and managing forest pests, including one editorial providing an overall idea of the monitoring, assessment and management of forest pests, two articles reviewing long-term changes in forest pests and forests, four papers focusing on the monitoring of forest pests, three papers on the assessment of forest pests, and four papers on the management of forest pests. These papers provide a better understanding of the structures and processes in forest ecosystems and fundamental information for the effective management of forest pests.

Book Forest Insect and Disease Conditions in the South 1980 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Forest Insect and Disease Conditions in the South 1980 Classic Reprint written by Charles W. Dull and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-11 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Insect and Disease Conditions in the South, 1980 This report documents the major forest insect and disease activity occurring in the South in 1980. It was compiled by the Forest Pest Management staff, State and Private Forestry, Southeastern Area, usda Forest Service. Pest management is an integral part of forest management because pest-caused damages can significantly affect management objectives. A major role of the pest management Specialist is to help the forest manager make decisions about prevention, suppression, and long-term plans. Forest entomologists and pathologists emphasize the use of integrated pest management strategies in dealing with forest pests. Integrated pest management involves the use of one or a combination of strategies to reduce the impact of a forest pest and restore it to natural levels within the forest environment. This can be accomplished through silvicultural, chemical, or biological means. Proper forest management is the key to reducing losses caused by forest pests. Whenever possible, recommendations for prevention-usually through silvicultural means-are incorporated into the initial stages of the forest planning process. However, prevention is not always possible, even in carefully planned forests, because of the dynamic nature of forest pests. Book Insects and Diseases of Mediterranean Forest Systems

Download or read book Insects and Diseases of Mediterranean Forest Systems written by Timothy D. Paine and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-01-06 with total page 888 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insect and disease issues are often specific to the Mediterranean forest systems rather than shared with the temperate forests. In addition to the specific native insects and diseases, the forests are subject to the invasion of exotic species. The forests are also at risk from high degrees of human activity, including changing patterns of forest fires, land management activities, intensive plantation forestry using introduced timber species from other Mediterranean climate zones, and atmospheric deposition. Combined with elements of global climate change that may disproportionately affect Mediterranean climate systems, this creates a number of significant management issues that are unique to the Mediterranean forests. It is our goal that the information contained in this volume will contribute to understanding the unique aspects of Mediterranean forest systems and to protecting these critical resources.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended as a general text for undergraduates studying the manage ment of forest insect pests. It is divided into four parts: insects, ecology, manage ment, and practice. Part I, Insects, contains two chapters. The first is intended to provide an overview of the general attributes of insects. Recognizing that it is impossible to adequately treat such a diverse and complex group of organisms in such a short space, I have attempted to highlight those insectan characteristics that make them difficult animals to combat. I have also tried to expose the insects' weak points, those attributes that make them vulnerable to manipulation by human actions. Even so, this first chapter will seem inadequate and sketchy to many of my colleagues. Ideally, this book should be used in conjunction with a laboratory manual covering insect anatomy, physiology, biology, behavior, and classifica tion in much greater depth-in fact, this is how I organize my forest entomology course. It is hoped that this first chapter will provide nonentomologists with a general feel for the insects and with a broad understanding of their strengths and weaknesses, while Chapter 2 will provide a brief overview of the diverse insect fauna that attacks the various parts of forest trees and their products.
