Download or read book Forest Insect and Disease Conditions in West central Canada in 1995 and Predictions for 1996 written by James Peter Brandt and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Forest Insect and Disease Survey (FIDS) is responsible for conducting and reporting insect and disease surveys of forests in the Northwest Region, which includes Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and the Northwest Territories. This report summarizes forest insect and disease conditions and other tree-damaging agents within the Northwest Region for the year, and also describes pest control projects throughout the region. An update of surveys for acid rain symptoms in permanently established Acid Rain National Early Warning System plots is reported, and forecasts of spruce budworm, jack pine budworm, and forest tent caterpillar populations are given.

Book Ecosystem Management in the Boreal Forest

Download or read book Ecosystem Management in the Boreal Forest written by Sylvie Gauthier and published by PUQ. This book was released on 2009 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest Ecosystem Management. A management approach that aims to maintain healthy and resilient forest ecosystems by focusing on a reduction of differences between natural and managed landscapes to ensure long-term maintenance of ecosystem functions and thereby retain the social and economic benefits they provide to society. That is the definition of forest ecosystem management proposed in this book, which provides a summary of key ecological concepts supporting this approach. The book includes a review of major disturbance regimes that shape the natural dynamics of the boreal forest and gives examples from different Canadian boreal regions. Several projects implementing the forest ecosystem management approach are presented to illustrate the challenges created by current forestry practices and the solutions that this new approach can provide. In short, knowledge and understanding of forest dynamics can serve as a guide for forest management. Planning interventions based on natural dynamics can facilitate reconciliation between forest harvesting needs and the interests of other forest users.

Book Ecology of a Managed Terrestrial Landscape

Download or read book Ecology of a Managed Terrestrial Landscape written by Ajith H. Perera and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growing popularity of the broad, landscape-scale approach to forest management represents a dramatic shift from the traditional, stand-based focus on timber production. Ecology of a Managed Terrestrial Landscape responds to the increasing need of forest policy developers, planners, and managers for an integrated, comprehensive perspective on ecological landscapes. The book examines the "big picture" of ecological patterns and processes through a case study of the vast managed forest region in Ontario. The contributors synthesize current landscape ecological knowledge of this area and look at gaps and future research directions from several points of view: spatial patterns, ecological functions and processes, natural disturbances, and ecological responses to disturbance. They also discuss the integration of landscape ecological knowledge into policies of forest management policies, particularly with respect to Ontario's legislative goals of forest sustainability. Ecology of a Managed Terrestrial Landscape is the first book to describe the landscape ecology of a continuously forested landscape in a comprehensive manner. It is written for instructors and students in forest management, wildlife ecology, and landscape ecology, and for forest managers, planners, and policy developers in North America.

Book Historical Patterns of Spruce Budworm Defoliation and Bark Beetle Outbreaks in North American Conifer Forests

Download or read book Historical Patterns of Spruce Budworm Defoliation and Bark Beetle Outbreaks in North American Conifer Forests written by David W. Williams and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This atlas presents maps of historical defoliation by the eastern and western spruce budworms and historical outbreaks of the mountain and southern pine beetles during the past half century. The maps encompass various regions of the conterminous United States and eastern Canada. This publication also serves as documentation for an extended set of digital maps, which are available on our website. The digital maps are useful for investigating spatial dynamics of insect populations and for providing pest disturbance inputs to spatially explicit forest simulation models.
