Chapters of the guidebook cover the regulations regarding spacing, the maximum density required by the silviculture prescription, biological criteria and operational considerations for including spacing in stand management prescriptions, fire protection, maintenance of stand-level biodiversity, considerations for post-treatment densities, manual and mechanized methods of spacing, selection of crop trees, monitoring, and reporting. The appendices include stand selection guidelines for use in stand management prescriptions.

Book An Illustrated Guide to the State of Health of Trees

Download or read book An Illustrated Guide to the State of Health of Trees written by E. R. Boa and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2003 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effective management of tree health problems depends on early detection and recognition of symptoms. This guide includes 140 photographs of symptoms from more than 50 tree species, which can be used as a basis for demonstrating the effects of pest (biotic) and non-living (abiotic) influences on trees. It is not designed as an identification guide to insect pests and diseases of trees, but rather seeks to enable a preliminary diagnosis and assessment of potential problems, in order to promote better planning and more effective management of forests and trees.

Book Silviculture Prescription Guidebook

Download or read book Silviculture Prescription Guidebook written by British Columbia. Ministry of Forests and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A silviculture prescription is a site-specific plan that describes the forest management objectives for an area. A prescription prescribes the method for harvesting the existing forest stand and a series of silviculture treatments that will be carried out to establish a free growing crop of trees in a manner that accommodates other resource values as identified. This document describes the contents of what silviculture prescription plans must contain in British Columbia to comply with the Forest Practices Code. It includes information on general requirements for the plan as well as specific requirements for tenure identification, management objectives, degree of consistency with other plans, ecological and resource information, forest health assessment and prescription, soil conservation, actions to accommodate forest resource values, silvicultural systems, harvesting, fire hazard abatement, silviculture treatments, stocking standards, and mapping.

Book Bioindicators of Forest Health and Sustainability

Download or read book Bioindicators of Forest Health and Sustainability written by W. H. Fogal and published by Sault Ste. Marie : Ontario Forest Research Institute. This book was released on 1997 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary objective of the project reported in this document is to review and evaluate the use of remote sensing applications to assess forest health and sustainability. After an introduction discussing the concept of forest health and relationships between stress, strain, and damage, section 2 reviews the factors most likely to cause plant stress, the manner in which the stresses are manifested, and methods for detecting or determining those factors (both environmental and man-made). Section 3 focuses on the manifestations or markers of stress, related factors, and other indicators of health and vigour. This leads to a review of the role of remote sensing technology for supplying such information in section 4, which describes such tools as cameras, imaging spectrometers, satellite-borne sensors, and geographic information technologies. Section 5 reviews applications where remote sensing could contribute to forest health studies, and identifies the most promising technologies. A design framework for forest health monitoring is then outlined, and some general implementation strategies are suggested. Specific project stages and pilot studies are also proposed which are intended to develop essential methodologies or test new approaches to forest health remote sensing. Finally, financial implications of various project options are assessed. The appendix includes discussion of temporal and spatial considerations for monitoring forest health and sustainability.
