Book In Forest Field and Factory

Download or read book In Forest Field and Factory written by Gauri Bharat and published by SAGE Publications Pvt. Limited. This book was released on 2019-12-22 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early twentieth century, Adivasi villages typically comprised small wooden huts amid a thickly forested landscape. Today, Adivasi dwellings are larger, more permanent, built of mud and often covered with elaborate murals. Drawing out stories of everyday lives that have largely remained hidden from history, In Forest, Field and Factory: Adivasi Habitations through Twentieth Century India uncovers how and why Adivasi dwellings changed, and what it reveals about communities’ relationships with their environments. The book focuses on Santals, one of the largest Adivasi communities in eastern India, who are particularly renowned for precision and craftsmanship in domestic architecture and mural art. Why did Santal families shift from using wood to building with mud? How did different Santal villages develop distinctly different mural art traditions? In answering these questions, a new kind of historical narrative emerges—one that is not about buildings alone but also provides insights into Adivasi people’s lives and their engagements with social, environmental and historical environments via architecture. This book will be of equal interest to students and scholars of architecture, history, environment studies and anthropology.

Book Fields Factories and Workshops

Download or read book Fields Factories and Workshops written by Pëtr A. Kropotkin and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 1992-11-01 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fields, Factories, and Workshops is a meticulously researched and brilliantly argued outline for redirecting agricultural and industrial production in a world of shrinking resources and increasing human needs. More prophetic then utopian, this volume remains remarkably pertinent to economic conditions at the end of the twentieth century. With a long intellectual precedent, Kropotkin's rejection of the traditional division of labor presupposes reorganized societies in which nations become economically self-sufficient and abandon global rivalry. His survey of worldwide economic development reveals penetrating insight into the potential of nations just beginning to emerge as major powers. This volume will be on continuing interest to historians, economists, sociologists, and labor studies specialists.

Book Fields Factories and Workshops

Download or read book Fields Factories and Workshops written by Kropotkin Peter Kropotkin and published by Black Rose Books Ltd.. This book was released on 2021-02-15 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction by George WoodcockIt would not be an exaggeration to describe this book as the central work of Kropotkin's writing career. In one way or another, it occupied more than twenty years of his life. It is a work of argument and suggestion rather than dogmatic statement, and the very tentativeness of this great book make its perceptions all the more relevant. With at one time Kropotkin's view of our future might have been regarded as a Utopian dream, today, as a result of the growing realization that the world's resources of energy and raw materials are finite, that food is our most precious commodity and that people's working lives are futile and stultifying, the lessons of this book, for both the rich world and the poor, are topical and hopeful. In addition to a general introduction to the most significant aspects of Kropotkin's life and thought, George Woodcock has prepared a comprehensive afterword to each essay, allowing the reader to fully see Kropotkin's ideas in the context of the world a century later. Is the 9th volume of the The Collected Works of Peter Kropotkin.Table of contentsEditor's IntroductionPreface to the Second EditionPreface to the First EditionChapter 1The Decentralization of IndustriesEditor's Afterword to Chapter 1Chapter 2The Possibilities of AgricultureEditor's Afterword to Chapter 2Chapter 3Small Industries and Industrial VillagesEditor's Afterword to Chapter 3Chapter 4Brain Work and Manual WorkEditor's Afterword to Chapter 4Chapter 5ConclusionEditor's Epilogue1994: 255 pages, index

Book Of Forests and Fields

Download or read book Of Forests and Fields written by Mario Jimenez Sifuentez and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2016-03-08 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2016 Choice Oustanding Academic Title Just looking at the Pacific Northwest’s many verdant forests and fields, it may be hard to imagine the intense work it took to transform the region into the agricultural powerhouse it is today. Much of this labor was provided by Mexican guest workers, Tejano migrants, and undocumented immigrants, who converged on the region beginning in the mid-1940s. Of Forests and Fields tells the story of these workers, who toiled in the fields, canneries, packing sheds, and forests, turning the Pacific Northwest into one of the most productive agricultural regions in the country. Employing an innovative approach that traces the intersections between Chicana/o labor and environmental history, Mario Sifuentez shows how ethnic Mexican workers responded to white communities that only welcomed them when they were economically useful, then quickly shunned them. He vividly renders the feelings of isolation and desperation that led to the formation of ethnic Mexican labor organizations like the Pineros y Campesinos Unidos Noroeste (PCUN) farm workers union, which fought back against discrimination and exploitation. Of Forests and Fields not only extends the scope of Mexican labor history beyond the Southwest, it offers valuable historical precedents for understanding the struggles of immigrant and migrant laborers in our own era. Sifuentez supplements his extensive archival research with a unique set of first-hand interviews, offering new perspectives on events covered in the printed historical record. A descendent of ethnic Mexican immigrant laborers in Oregon, Sifuentez also poignantly demonstrates the links between the personal and political, as his research leads him to amazing discoveries about his own family history...www.mariosifuentez.com
