Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Entomology As author of a work on a subject which does not appeal to a very wide circle of readers, I realise that it is a very high compliment that a second edition has been called for in a comparatively short time. Hence there is no need for drastic changes. I have, however, tried to benefit by the kindly advice given by entomological friends and others interested in the subject; therefore the chapters have been re-arranged more in accordance with the sequence of entomological classification. I have tried also, as far as I possibly can, to correct the recognition of photos and drawings of several friends. In this respect the first edition showed a slight error in acknowledging special photos as emanating from a friend rather than the firm of which he was a partner, and to whom I am very grateful for assistance. I am specially indebted to Professor Carpenter, of the Royal College of Science, Dublin, for correcting several points in the Introductory chapter. Book Insect Enemies of Eastern Forests Classic Reprint

Download or read book Insect Enemies of Eastern Forests Classic Reprint written by Frank Cooper Craighead and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-23 with total page 690 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insect Enemies of Eastern Forests In the publication on the western insects, emphasis is placed on bark beetle control, for in the western forests there still remain great reserves of overmature timber, which are subject to enormous bark beetle losses. Naturally, bark beetles and measures for suppressing their outbreaks are of overshadowing importance in those areas. In the eastern part of the United States, where there are practically no reserves of mature timber, the forester has before him the matter of growing new forests. Here, the forest-insect problem is principally the prevention of outbreaks. Therefore in this volume considerable emphasis is placed on the possibilities of so adjusting silvicultural practices as to avoid losses, as well as on direct control. Also, in the eastern forests there exists a preponderance of deciduous or hard wood species, which are more subject to attack by insects during log ging and manufacturing operations, and even after being placed in use, than are the conifers. The protection of logs, lumber, and crude and finished forest products is consequently a more important. Phase of forest entomology in the East. Book Forest Insects of Australia Classic Reprint

Download or read book Forest Insects of Australia Classic Reprint written by Walter W. Froggatt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-21 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Insects of Australia AS a worker in the field of Entomology, Mr. Walter W. Froggatt needs no introduction and his compilation of this little volume on the Forest Insects of Australia is not the least valuable of his contributions to Science during the past thirty years. Ithis work will be found a fund of information regarding white ants, timber borers, and forest insect pests, which is of both practical and scientific value, and embodying, as it does, the results of many years' careful investigation, it may be accepted as a text and reference book of value by those interested in Forestry, Architecture, or industries in' which wood as a material is employed. The extent of injury done to timber by insect pests is hardly realised, and if the economic loss could be estimated, it would arouse the public mind from its apathy in regard to both the introduction of borer and other pests from abroad, and to the urgent need for protective and remedial measures. The matter is one which demands the serious attention of our legislators, and, in writing this introduction, it is in the hope that this publication may serve to throw light upon it, and to materially assist in its better consideration. This book was released on 2018-02-19 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Technical Papers on Miscellaneous Forest Insects: I. Contributions Toward a Monograph of the Bark-Weevils of the Genus Pissodes It is the purpose of this bulletin to include such miscellaneous technical papers on insects, other than the scolytid beetles, as are either injurious or beneficial and of more or less importance in their relation to American forests. These papers are based largely, if not entirely, on original observations and investigations, supple mented by material in the United States National Museum, and serve as a necessary basis for the nonteehnical papers on the same insects. As they are intended to be of service. Especially to the economic entomologist and to the student of forest entomology, they are, as a rule, presented-in a somewhat, less formal style than if intended for the systematist only. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Fourteenth Annual Meeting of the Association of Economic Entomologists, 1902 This work served a most excellent purpose by bringing together in one volume the principal records of observations of forest insects by American entomologists, and has doubtless stimulated others, as it did the present writer, to an active interest in the subject of insect enemies of trees. But it would seem that there is at present a special. Need of an introduction or guide to the study of forest entomology for the special use of students in forest schools and others who desire general nontechnical information on the subject. It is, therefore, my object in this address, like the pioneer making a preliminary survey in a new country, to consider the general features of the subject and leave the details to be treated in succeed ing contributions as the evolution of the forestry movement in this country indicates the need. Download or read book Text Book of the Diseases of Trees Classic Reprint written by Robert Hartig and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Text-Book of the Diseases of Trees Some fifty years ago a number of able investigators, of whom only Saxesen, Th. Hartig, and Ratzeburg need be named here, applied themselves to the study of insects. The life-history of forest insects, their harmfulness or usefulness, soon became the favourite study of many practical foresters, and in a few decades the joint efforts of numerous workers were rewarded by the elevation of Forest Entomology to the position of a much appreciated subject of scientific instruction, which has become the common property of all educated foresters. The case was otherwise with those plant-diseases which cannot be ascribed to the injuries of animals. Their investi gation was delayed until quite recently; for it was only after botanical science, by the aid of its chief instrument, the microscope, had obtained a clear insight into the normal strue ture and vital phenomena of plants, and especially after the study of fungi had been prosecuted in the last few decades by a series of distinguished investigators, that the examination of the phenomena of disease in the life of plants could be undertaken with a prospect of success. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Role of Insects in the Forest: From the Annual Report of the State Geologist of New Jersey for 1899Exactly how much harm they do is perhaps a question. Their life history is not well known, and just how much living tissue the larva requires to bring it to the pupal stage is yet to be ascertained. It is reasonably certain, however, that they require two or more years to reach maturity, and that their presence alone does not indicate any serious danger to the trees.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
