Book Guidelines for Developing Stand Density Management Regimes

Download or read book Guidelines for Developing Stand Density Management Regimes written by British Columbia. Forest Practices Branch and published by British Columbia, Forest Practices Branch. This book was released on 1999 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stand density management is the process of controlling tree density within a stand to achieve desired objectives. Stand density management practices include the spacing of planted trees, pre-commercial thinning, and commercial thinning. A sound density management prescription must consider three elements of prediction: biological responses of the stand to treatment, economic implications of the treatment, and forest-level effects of the treatment. This document provides essential information on each of these elements, and provides a structured decision process for making site-specific density management prescriptions. Sections of the document cover the biological concepts of timber production, economic principles of timber production, forest planning considerations, the decision process, and density management planning tools. Includes glossary.

Book Relative Density

Download or read book Relative Density written by Colin D. MacLean and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relative density is a measure of tree crowding compared to a reference level such as normal density. This stand attribute, when compared to management standards, indicates adequacy of stocking. The Pacific Coast Forest Survey Unit assesses the relative density of each stand sampled by summing the individual density contributions of each tree tallied, thus quantifying the effects of mixed species, mixed age, and irregular spacing on total stand density. Each tree's contribution reflects its stage of development, species, and social position. Plot clusters are designed to permit assessment of the effect of irregular spacing.

Book Stand Density Management Diagrams for Lodgepole Pine White Spruce and Interior Douglas fir

Download or read book Stand Density Management Diagrams for Lodgepole Pine White Spruce and Interior Douglas fir written by Craig Farnden and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Density manipulation is one of the most powerful tools available to silviculturists to achieve a broad range of silvicultural objectives. One of the most effective methods of planning density management in even-aged stands is through the use of stand density management diagrams. These diagrams graphically depict the temporal relationships between stand density, top height, quadratic mean diameter and mean tree volume. They allow the user to develop and project crop plans through time, to determine the optimum timing of thinnings, to determine the operational feasibility of thinnings, and to contrast potential outcomes from a number of stand management regimes. The stand density management diagrams for lodgepole pine, white spruce and interior Douglas-fir in this report were derived from managed stand yield tables produced by TASS, an individual tree, distance-dependent growth model. The report describes their use in planning thinning regimes and making preliminary yield estimations.

Book The Principles of Forest Yield Study

Download or read book The Principles of Forest Yield Study written by Ernst Assmann and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Principles of Forest Yield Study: Studies in the Organic Production, Structure, Increment and Yield of Forest Stands reviews the progress that has been made in the field of forest yield studies, especially those concerning the organic production, structure, increment, and yield of forest stands. Topics covered include woody growth as part of the total produce of plant societies; growth and form of forest trees; constitution and development of stands; and forest stand structure, increment, and yield in relation to silvicultural treatment. This book is divided into five sections and begins with an overview of the history of forest yield studies, as well as the place of forest yield theory in forest science. Research objectives and methods employed in forest yield studies are outlined. The discussion then turns to the interactions between soil, climate and plant production; the social structure of tree crops; growth performance of tree crops in relation to site; and disturbances in the normal trend of increment. The use of fertilizers for amelioration and treatment of forest soils are discussed from the standpoint of yield studies. This monograph will be a useful resource for practitioners in forestry, the natural sciences, plant physiology, soil science, and meteorology.

Book Mixed Species Forests

Download or read book Mixed Species Forests written by Hans Pretzsch and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook offers a detailed overview of the current state of knowledge concerning the ecology and management of compositionally and structurally diverse forests. It provides answers to central questions such as: What are the scientific concepts used to assess the growth, dynamics and functioning of mixed-species forests, how generalizable are they, and what kind of experiments are necessary to develop them further? How do mixed-species stands compare with monocultures in relation to productivity, wood quality, and ecological stability in the face of stress and disturbances? How are the effects of species mixtures on ecosystem functioning influenced by the particular species composition, site conditions, and stand structure? How does any over- or underyielding at the forest-stand level emerge from the tree and organ level, and what are the main mechanisms behind mixing effects? How can our current scientific understanding of mixed-species forests be integrated into silvicultural concepts as well as practical forest management and planning? Do the ecological characteristics of mixed-species stands also translate into economic differences between mixtures and monocultures? In addition, the book addresses experimental designs and analytical approaches to study mixed-species forests and provides extensive empirical information, general concepts, models, and management approaches for mixed-species forests. As such, it offers a valuable resource for students, scientists and educators, as well as professional forest planners, managers, and consultants.

Book Compatible Forest Management

Download or read book Compatible Forest Management written by Robert A. Monserud and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public debate has stimulated interest in finding greater compatibility among forest management regimes. The debate has often portrayed management choices as tradeoffs between biophysical and socioeconomic components of ecosystems. Here we focus on specific management strategies and emphasize broad goals such as biodiversity, wood production and habitat conservation while maintaining other values from forestlands desired by the public. We examine the following proposition: Commodity production (timber, nontimber forest products) and the other forest values (biodiversity, fish and wildlife habitat) can be simultaneously produced from the same area in a socially acceptable manner. Based on recent research in the Pacific Northwest, we show there are alternatives for managing forest ecosystems that avoid the divisive arena of 'either-or' choices. Much of the work discussed in this book addresses two aspects of the compatibility issue. First, how are various forest management practices related to an array of associated goods and services? Second, how do different approaches to forest management affect relatively large and complex ecosystems?

Book Multiaged Silviculture

    Book Details:
  • Author : Kevin Laughlin O'Hara
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press, USA
  • Release : 2014
  • ISBN : 0198703074
  • Pages : 227 pages

Download or read book Multiaged Silviculture written by Kevin Laughlin O'Hara and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2014 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the latest scientific and management information on multiaged silviculture, an emerging strategy for managing forestry systems worldwide. Over recent decades, forest science and management have tended to emphasize plantation silviculture. Whilst this clearly meets our wood production needs, many of the world's forests need to be managed far less intensively and more flexibly in order to maintain their natural ecosystem functions together with the values inherent in those processes. Developing multiaged management strategies for these complex forest ecosystems represents a global challenge to successfully integrate available science with sustainable management practices. Multiaged Silviculture covers the ecology and dynamics of multiaged stands, the management operations associated with regeneration, tending, and stocking control, and the implications of this strategy on production, genetic diversity, and stand health. It is primarily aimed at graduate level students and researchers in the fields of forestry and silviculture, but will also be of relevance and use to all professional foresters and silviculturists.
