Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Culture and Eucalyptus Trees In presenting to the public a printed copy of my "Lecture on Forest Planting and Australian Gum-Trees," delivered before the Santa Barbara College Association, for the benefit of the library, it is necessary to preface the lecture by the statement that it appears in print in consequence of repeated demands for the publication from several localities in the southern part of California. Forest protection, the want of trees, in almost every part of the State, is manifest to all owners of land, who are eager to begin the planting; the only question being - What shall we plant? The rapidity of growth of the Blue Gum, and the facility with which it can be propagated, is a feature of great importance; but information is wanted. Much that has been written on the subject is mere speculative theories, often contradictory, and too uncertain to merit the confidence necessary to base such an important industry. This industry not only necessitates that the protection should be cheaply and quickly obtained, but that the tree should have a value for mechanical or other purposes. This value gives confidence to the planter, without which it can not be expected the work will go on. The inquiry comes, What is the value of the tree? Book Growth of Eucalyptus in California Plantations Classic Reprint

Download or read book Growth of Eucalyptus in California Plantations Classic Reprint written by Woodbridge Metcalf and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Growth of Eucalyptus in California Plantations Undoubtedly the first seeds brought into California were of the Blue Gum, Eucalyptus globulus, and the early tests with this species showed it to be so thoroughly at home under the new conditions, and so rapid in its growth, that most of the planting was confined to this tree. This fact seems rather strange as this species has never bee-n considered of much commercial value in either Tasmania or Victoria where it is native, and where mature trees of much larger dimensions are found than any grown thus far under California conditions. The first trees planted were usually set out singly or in narrow belts, and their rapidity of growth gave rise to many exaggerated statements as to the probable financial returns fro-m plantations. Well meaning but over-enthusiastic persons made estimates of growth of plantations by assuming that each tree planted therein would grow as rapidly as trees in the Open under optimum soil, moisture, and light conditions forgetting entirely the influences exerted by different type-s of soil and climate, the percentage of loss in established plantations, and the slowing up in rate of growth because of competition between trees growing under crowded plantation conditions. (Government Botanist for Victoria, and Director of the Botanic Gardens of Melbourne), On the 22d of June, 1871. 1 The toils of science swell the wealth of art." Bulwer Lytton, from Schiller, Strange as it may appear, an impression seems to be prevailing in these communities that our forests have to serve no other purposes but to provide wood for our immediate and present wants, be it fuel or timber. For even after the warning of climatic changes, and after the commencing scarcity of wood, no forest administration, at least none adequate or regularly organized, has been initiated in any portion of Australia) and thus the forests, even in districts already very populous, remain almost unguarded, become extensively reduced, and in some localities are already annihilated; indeed, the requirements of the current time alone are kept in view. Under such circumstances it cannot be surprising that neither an universal forest supervision, nor a judicious restraint of consumption, nor an ample utilization of all the various collateral resources of our woodlands, received that serious attention to which such measures became more and more entitled. During the earlier years of our colonization, while the population DEGREESas but thinly scattered over the territory, or densely concentrated in a few places only, all demands on the wood resources were comparatively so limited as to cause, perhaps, nowhere vast destruction of the timber vegetation, much less any alarm for meeting the requirements of the future. Then followed the first gold period, with all its bustle, turmoils and agitations, preventing reflection on al

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eucalyptus Globulus: From a Botanic, Economic, and Medical Point of View, Embracing Its Introduction, Culture, and Uses The tree is of remarkably rapid growth, and, when planted in marshy places in a suitable climate, it draws the moisture from the soil and dries the earth, owing to the great evaporating-surface of the foliage, thus preventing the generation of marsh - miasm. SO far, this would be, at least to a certain extent, a mere mechanical pro cess, and one that might result from the employment of any rapid growing heavy-foliaged tree, such as some of our large-leaved fast growing native poplars; but it is extremely probable that the highly camphorated foliage of the blue-gum trees exerts a chemical influence upon the atmosphere in their immediate vicinity of greater value than that resulting from ordinary leaf-evaporation. Certainly, some such influence is indicated from the extraordinary sanitary effects attrib uted to this plant, which seem to be worthily authenticated, and have been so efficacious as to warrant naming it the fever-tree. Although the Blue Gum is one of the largest trees in the world, its seeds are very small, and care is required in raising young plants. The most satisfactory method is to sow the seeds in light sandy soil, covering them with a slight sprinkling of sand, and pressing the sur face by beating it with a spade or flat trowel this will put the seed sufficiently deep. A frame such as is used for forwarding tender vegetable plants, and which can be covered with a glazed sash, will be found most economical. The soil should be kept moderately damp and the glass shaded for a week or two, until the young plants appear. They make rapid progress under ordinary management.
