Book Forerunners of the Reformation

Download or read book Forerunners of the Reformation written by Heiko A. Oberman and published by James Clarke & Co.. This book was released on 2003-05 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oberman's magisterial work transfers discussion of late medieval Christian thought from the private studies of the specialist to more general use and understanding, and explains the significance of the ideas of the time. Although this 'Late Medieval Reader' does not exhaust the riches of the period between the High Middle Ages and the Reformation era, it introduces the reader to aspects of such major themes as conciliarism, curialism, mysticism, scholasticism, the spirituality of the Devotio Moderna, and the impact of Renaissance humanism. The theme of the Forerunners has grown out of the consideration that the justified rejection of a confessional reading of the past has been succeeded by an equally unhistorical disjunction of the Medieval and Reformation periods. Without a grasp of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, the medieval basis of modern thought is incomplete, since Reformation and Counter Reformation seem to arise 'out of the blue'.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Forerunners offers the first detailed history of the immigration of Dutch Jews to the United States and to the whole American diaspora. Robert Swierenga describes the life of Jews in Holland during the Napoleonic era and examines the factors that caused them to emigrate, first to the major eastern seaboard cities of the United States, then to the frontier cities of the Midwest, and finally to San Francisco. He provides a detailed look at life among the Dutch Jews in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and New Orleans. Swierenga gathered materials from published local community histories, Jewish archival records and periodicals, synagogue records, and particularly, the Federal Population Census manuscripts from 1820 through 1900. He details the contributions and the leadership provided by the Dutch Jews and relates how they lost their "Dutchness" and their Orthodoxy within several generations of their arrival here and were absorbed into broader American Judaism.

Book excerpt: To these essays I have prefixed an ode, "Ara Pacis," written during the first days of the war. It is an act of faith in Peace and Concord. Another act of faith will comprise the final chapter. This time it will be faith in action; the faith which, in the face of the brute force of states and of tyrannical opinion, proclaims the invincible independence of Thought. I was half inclined to add to this collection a meditation upon Empedocles of Agrigentum and the Reign of Hatred.[1] But it was somewhat too long, and its inclusion would have impaired the symmetry of the volume.

Book Forerunners a Prelude to the Second Coming

Download or read book Forerunners a Prelude to the Second Coming written by Gus Leodas and published by Gus Leodas. This book was released on 2015-08-10 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "If you don't believe in miracles, you will after you read this modern day novel." Forerunners is timely in today's world events with the increased focus on religion and terrorism in the Middle East and elsewhere, and is based on the Second Coming prophesies in the Bible, referencing Matthew, Mark, and The Revelation to John. All the major religions expect a messiah, or a son, or a messenger, or an avatar, or some bodily manifestation of God. Included are a United States ambassador, a priest, a psychic, an Olympic champion, and the temptress Pandora. By a series of mysterious Biblical events, the ambassador and priest learn of the arrival of the Anti-Christ forerunner. Bible prophesies say that disruption in natural disasters, international economic recessions, terrorism of religious men and women who serve God, and destruction of religious institutions are preludes to the coming of the Anti-Christ. All are happening today. The ambassador and priest's search to find that forerunner and the forerunner for Christ takes them to Turkey, Greece, India, Japan, Washington, Los Angeles and to the United Nations where the ambassador gives a stirring speech on peace after they expose the Anti-Christ forerunner in New Delhi, India at a meeting of all the world's religions.

Book Forerunners of Modern Financial Economics

Download or read book Forerunners of Modern Financial Economics written by Donald Stabile and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economists who began using statistics to analyze financial markets in the 1950s have been credited with revolutionizing the scholarship of investing and with inaugurating modern financial economics. By examining the work of economists who used statistics to analyze financial markets before 1950, Donald Stabile provides evidence about the forerunners of modern financial economics. In studying these predecessors, this innovative book reveals that, starting around 1900, there were economists in the United States who believed that changes in stock prices could be treated as a random variable to be analyzed with statistical methods, and who used early versions of the efficient markets theory to justify their belief. Although they did not call themselves Bayesians, the author explores how they adhered to a philosophy consistent with Bayesian statistics. A concluding epilogue considers the linkages between the forerunners of modern finance, its innovators and modern successors. An original work in the history of economic thought, Forerunners of Modern Financial Economics will be of great interest to both economists and historians interested in the development of statistical finance and economic thought, as well as to statisticians, financial analysts, and advanced undergraduate and graduate students studying financial economics.

Book Forerunners of the Faith Teacher s Guide

Download or read book Forerunners of the Faith Teacher s Guide written by Nathan Busenitz and published by Moody Publishers. This book was released on 2020-07-07 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enter God’s Story of Faithfulness to His People The Christian faith extends beyond our personal experiences, our individual churches, and far beyond our present age. This, for the Christian, is great news. When we become acquainted with the legacy of our Christian heritage, we connect our stories to those of the faithful believers who have come before us. This connection is precisely what Nathan Busenitz, Dean of Faculty and professor of church history at The Master's Seminary, seeks to provide. Based on the bestselling Fundamentals of the Faith, Forerunners of the Faith outlines the biblical orthodoxy that characterizes the true church. Busenitz succinctly identifies thirteen key lessons that capture the trials and triumphs of the historical Church, providing insights for how the ancient Christians responded to the problems of their day to become the pillars of faith we now consider them to be. Learn how your faith stands on the shoulders of giants like Athanasius, Augustine, and Wycliffe. As more than a didactic resource, Forerunners of the Faith serves as spiritual encouragement as we remember the legacy of God’s faithfulness to his people.

Book excerpt: "In the last years of the Forerunner empire, chaos rules. The Flood--a horrifying shape-changing parasite--has arrived in force, aided by unexpected allies. Internal strife within the ecumene has desperately weakened Forerunner defenses.Too little, too late, the legal rate of Juridicals is only now investigating possible crimes by the Master Builder and others. Evidence-gathering agents known collectively as Catalog have been dispatched to collect testimony from the Librarian and both Didacts: the Ur-Didact, treacherously abandoned in a Flood-infested system, and the Bornstellar Didact, who accompanies the Librarian as she preserves specimens against the dire possibility of Halo extermination.Facing the imminent collapse of their civilization, the Librarian and the Ur-Didact reveal what they know about the relationship between the long-vanished Precursors and the Flood. The Precursors created many technological species, including humanity and the Forerunners. But the roots of the Flood may be found in an act of enormous barbarity, carried out beyond our galaxy ten million years before...Because of that barbarism, a greater evil looms. Only the Ur-Didact and the Librarian--husband and wife pushed into desperate conflict--hold the keys to a solution. Facing the consequences of a mythic tragedy, one of them must now commit the greatest atrocity of all time--to prevent an insane evil from dominating the entire universe"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uncovering injustices built into our everyday surroundings Callous Objects unearths cases in which cities push homeless people out of public spaces through a combination of policy and strategic design. Robert Rosenberger examines such commonplace devices as garbage cans, fences, signage, and benches—all of which reveal political agendas beneath the surface. Such objects have evolved, through a confluence of design and law, to be open to some uses and closed to others, but always capable of participating in collective ends on a large scale. Rosenberger brings together ideas from the philosophy of technology, social theory, and feminist epistemology to spotlight the widespread anti-homeless ideology built into our communities and enacted in law. Book excerpt: We are about to witness, and it has already begun, the rise of the Ecclesia in her finest glory, her greatest strength and her strongest focus. The Church of the Lord Jesus, which is not a building but a people stong and mighty, will become a vast, irrepressible force on th earth; raising the banner of His Conquest and announcing the Day of the Lord. Their dominance will be propelled by a spiritual priesthood but will have corporate expressions. They will not merely pray in the House of men. They will determine the state of nations and promote the Agenda of the Kingdom in all spheres of human endeavors. They are powerful beyond measure, for through them, the Lord will raise the mountain of His house, over every other mountain. Hallelujah! This glorious day is already here amongst us and we are most blessed to be this people, this generation set in the context of the Finish Line. We are forerunners of the move of God, going before Him and preparing the peoples. Our role is significant, our strategy is covert and our results are staggering. Since we are carried on the wings of the Spirit, we do not trust in the arm of flesh. We are the swords sharpened for the battle, and more than conquerors, walking in the victories of Christ.

Book excerpt: A radical and necessary rethinking of trans care What does it mean for trans people to show up for one another, to care deeply for one another? How have failures of care shaped trans lives? What care practices have trans subjects and communities cultivated in the wake of widespread transphobia and systemic forms of trans exclusion? Trans Care is a critical intervention in how care labor and care ethics have been thought, arguing that dominant modes of conceiving and critiquing the politics and distribution of care entrench normative and cis-centric familial structures and gendered arrangements. A serious consideration of trans survival and flourishing requires a radical rethinking of how care operates. Forerunners is a thought-in-process series of breakthrough digital works.
