Book Foreign Investment and Spillovers Routledge Revivals

Download or read book Foreign Investment and Spillovers Routledge Revivals written by Magnus Blomstrom and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-01 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The spillover effect of multinational companies has, historically, been subject to much debate. The assumption that the host country can be expected to enjoy spillovers – improvements in the balance of payments, in the influx of foreign currency and in other sectors of the economy not directly affected by the multinational – has not necessarily been corroborated in practice. First published in 1989, this book addresses this debate, and the very different conclusions that can be drawn about spillovers. Reporting on significant research on Latin America and drawing comparisons with findings elsewhere, Foreign Investment and Spillovers provides students and researchers with a truly international perspective.

Book Structural Reforms Productivity and Technological Change in Latin America

Download or read book Structural Reforms Productivity and Technological Change in Latin America written by Jorge M. Katz and published by United Nations Publications. This book was released on 2001 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last ten to fifteen years, profound structural reforms have moved Latin America and the Caribbean from closed, state-dominated economies to ones that are more market-oriented and open. Policymakers expected that these changes would speed up growth. This book is part of a multi-year project to determine whether these expectation have been fulfilled. Focusing on technological change, the impact of the reforms on the process of innovation is examined. It notes that the development process is proving to be highly heterogenous across industries, regions and firms and can be described as strongly inequitable. This differentiation that has emerged has implications for job creation, trade balance, and the role of small and medium sized firms. This ultimately suggests, amongst other things, the need for policies to better spread the use of new technologies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As usual in this series, Chapter 1 reviews the configuration of global risks and assesses the outstanding short term opportunities and challenges facing the LAC region. A special focus is placed this time around on the difference between exposure and vulnerability to exogenous shocks, with the latter assessed by adjusting exposure for a country’s shock absorption policy capacity. Given the global context and associated concerns with capital flow volatility, in Chapter 2 we take a look at the comparatively more stable components of international flows: FDI and Remittances. The cyclicality and volatility, as well as the joint determinants of FDI and Remittances are reviewed.

Book Multinational Investment in Developing Countries

Download or read book Multinational Investment in Developing Countries written by Thomas Andersson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-09-11 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the struggle for gains from direct investment between multinationals and developing countries. It discusses which policies work best in influencing the behaviour of MNEs and how developing countries compete with one another for multinational investment. It argues that the tax regimes of different countries rarly deter investors but that nationalisation acts as a powerful disincentive. It also concludes that governments should not be expected to sacrifice the environment to attract multinationals.

Book Technological Transformation in the Third World Volume 3

In each case there was a striking failure in building up national technological capability so that the country could grapple with the problems it faced.

Book The Market System Structural Change and Efficient Economies

Download or read book The Market System Structural Change and Efficient Economies written by Bodo B. Gemper and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume's aim is to promote thought in readers interested in what kind of economic policies, market systems, welfare systems, and socialist systems should each pursue under the pressures of accelerating change? Should there be more government or less government? This is the central question addressed by this internationally drawn group of experts. The book features major case studies on the People's Republic of China, Canada, Ghana, Great Britain, South Africa, Taiwan, and West Germany. Contributors include, Richard L. Brinkman, from the United States, James C.W. Ahiakpor and Tillo E. Kuhn from Canada, Dieter Loesch and Herbert Schmidt from Germany, and Geert L. deWet from South Africa. For technical economists interested in world trade, business people concerned with expanding markets, and policy analysts concerned about how technology, culture and politics drive economic systems, this book is essential reading. As the editor points out, indicative targeting, as the latest weapon in the arsenal of economic science, makes it possible to systematically discover signals that could become points of reference--landmarks--for the way into the future. The approach taken by the authors enables us to trace future trends by extrapolating current data onto new territory. It will help the policy maker identify desirable trends and ideas; and at the same time, provides some early warning signals about high-risk trends and patterns. Bodo B. Gemper is professor of economics at the University of Siegen in Germany. He previously edited a Transaction volume, Structural Dynamics of Industrial Policy, and in German, Protectionism in the World Economy.

Book Innovation and Structural Change in Post Socialist Countries A Quantitative Approach

Download or read book Innovation and Structural Change in Post Socialist Countries A Quantitative Approach written by David A. Dyker and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book uses a range of S&T and structural indicators to analyse the transfonnation process, in particular the transfonnation of science, technology and industry, in the fonner communist countries. The book originates from a sense of the tremendous need for quantitative indicators for assessing trends and perfonnance in the post-socialist economies. S&T systems in the region have passed through the first phase of rapid deterioration, or as it is called by some analysts 'implosion'. After ten years of transfonnation we are witnessing a process of increasing differentiation of these countries in tenns of general patterns of growth and structural change, as well as specific lines of restructuring in their S&T systems. The question of sources of growth - or indeed of stagnation - is an increasingly urgent one, from both the policy and academic perspectives. In that context there is a pressing need for in-depth assessment of restructuring patterns in science, technology and industry in the region, as a basis for understanding how restructuring in S&T is linked to industrial restructuring, and to general economic and social transfonnation. As the contributions to this volume show, there is now a critical mass of quantitative data across the post-socialist countries which deserves to be studied more thoroughly in a comparative manner. The changes of the last ten years have produced varying patterns of adjustment which are now clearly visible in S&T and structural indicators.
