Book Foreign Direct Investment Economic Growth and Export in Ethiopia

Download or read book Foreign Direct Investment Economic Growth and Export in Ethiopia written by Endale Teshome Wodajo and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2014-05-30 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The vast body of literature asserts that FDI helps to promote economic growth through various channels. However, mixed empirical evidences are prevalent contradicting these theoretical prescriptions making the role of FDI in promoting growth and curing development problems controversial. Such conflicting evidence is not exception to Ethiopian economy. Moreover, in Ethiopian context, studies on sectoral export versus FDI are also scanty. Therefore, the purpose of this research work is to study the relationships of FDI with real gross domestic product and export both at aggregate and sectoral level. The book has five chapters: the introductory chapter, review of related literature chapter, chapter three is about theoretical frame, methodology and data description, chapter four is the empirical analysis comprising descriptive, econometric, and causality relationship. The final chapter presents major findings and conclusions. The analyses inform the outcomes of FDI both at aggregate and sector level to policy makers and those working in the area; moreover, it is useful for professional and academic researchers to address FDI related policy issues through further studies.

Book Foreign Direct Investment Exports and Economic Growth in Ethiopia

Download or read book Foreign Direct Investment Exports and Economic Growth in Ethiopia written by Michael C. Mammo and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book applies the Cointegrated Vector Autoregressive Analysis on annual data from 1971 to 2009 to investigate the transmission mechanism between foreign direct investment and a number of key macroeconomic variables in Ethiopia. The author places due emphasis on identifying the determinants of FDI and the FDI-Growth nexus. Also known as the Copenhagen School, this econometric technique is particularly relevant when data exhibit non-stationary properties. Its distinguishing feature, according to Professor Katarina Juselius- one of the most notable minds behind this school-, is that economic theory and applications have been developed in close cooperation. The author sheds a new light on the topic with an extended and revealing cointegration analysis preceded by a comprehensive theoretical exposition. The results from the analysis are no less fascinating.

This book was released on 2014-07-28 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book measures the impact of foreign direct investment (FDI) on economic growth in Ethiopia based on annual time series data over the period 1974 to 2011. It in particular examines how FDI affects GDP growth, both directly and also conditioning on trade liberalization that Ethiopia adopted in early 1990s. It increases activity not only in FDI beneficiary firms but also the effect can spread to other firms in the country and sectors through technology spillover, human and capital formation and increasing competition, thus raising productivity for the whole economy.

Book Foreign Direct Investment in Large Scale Agriculture in Africa

Download or read book Foreign Direct Investment in Large Scale Agriculture in Africa written by Atkeyelsh G. M. Persson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-02 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines environmental sustainability and inclusive economic growth, providing in-depth analysis of foreign direct investment (FDI) in large-scale agriculture in Ethiopia. In most African states, arable land and other natural resources play a pivotal role for economic growth and development. Ethiopia is one of those countries where agriculture is the backbone of the economy. This sector has also been an attraction for FDI in Sub-Saharan Africa since the global food and financial crisis of 2007 and 2008. This book uses six foreign investments in large-scale agriculture as case studies to examine current Ethiopian policies, the patterns of investment they promote, how these impact on land-based resources and communities’ wellbeing. Presenting analyses of the economic, social and political realities of foreign direct investment in the local context, Foreign Direct Investment in Large-Scale Agriculture in Africa discusses how the fundamental principles of pro-poor and environmentally sustainable investments intersect with the government’s ambition to advance Ethiopia’s development agenda. This book will be of interest to scholars and students of African economics and sustainable development, African policy makers, intergovernmental organisations as well as multilateral and bilateral development partners.

Book Macroeconomic Determinants of Economic Growth in Ethiopia A Vector Correction Model

Download or read book Macroeconomic Determinants of Economic Growth in Ethiopia A Vector Correction Model written by Asmamaw Kassahun Agdew and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2019-10-07 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2016 in the subject Economics - Case Scenarios, grade: 3.89, , language: English, abstract: The main objective of this study is to investigate the macroeconomic determinants of economic growth in Ethiopia from 1974-2014. A Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) to cointegration approach is applied in order to investigate the long run and short run relationship between real GDP and its macroeconomic determinants. The finding of the cointegration test shows that there is a stable long run relationship between real GDP, gross domestic saving, labor, human capital, export, FDI, foreign aid and external debt. The long run empirical result reveals gross domestic saving, human capital proxied by government expenditure on health and education, and labor force have positive and significant relationship with real output. However export and real GDP have positive but insignificant relationship. External debt, foreign aid and FDI have negatively significant relationship with real GDP during the study period. The short run dynamic results shows that human capital, saving and FDI have positive relationship with output growth whereas labor, export, aid and external debt have negative relationship with Real GDP. The coefficient of equilibrating error term (ECM) suggests that the speed of adjustment (feedback effect towards the long run equilibrium) takes few years for full adjustment when there is a shock in the system. In order to sustain long run growth the government or policy makers should design appropriate policies that results in the efficient use of resources contributing to economic growth and proper management of variables resulting to negative growth in order to reverse their effect on output.

Book Chinese FDI in Ethiopia

Download or read book Chinese FDI in Ethiopia written by World Bank and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chinese Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) into Africa is on the rise and Ethiopia is at the forefront of this trend. On request of the Government, the World Bank surveyed 69 Chinese enterprises doing business in Ethiopia with a 95-question survey in May/June 2012. The survey covered various aspects of the foreign direct investment climate in Ethiopia, including infrastructure, sales and supplies, land, crime, competition, finance, human resources, and questions about general opportunities and constraints for doing business in Ethiopia. This report summarizes the results of survey and provides policy suggestions in light of the analysis; the report also provides some broader background of the expected benefits of FDI into Ethiopia as well as current policies and approaches to promote incoming investment. Addressing identified obstacles could help Ethiopia to take better advantage of foreign investors in order to accelerate the shift from a predominantly low-productivity agriculture-based economy towards a higher-productivity manufacturing and export-based economy. Experiences in successful countries around the world, and especially East Asia show that foreign investment is instrumental to facilitate such a structural transformation and to maintain sustained and broad-based economic development. This study recommends five main areas for policy adjustments to facilitate foreign investors coming into Ethiopia: adjust customs clearance procedures and trade regulations; facilitate currency convertibility and increase transparency of the exchange rate policy; improve tax administration consistency and efficacy; execute impartial labor regulation; and increase the supply and quality of skilled workers.

Book Africa s manufacturing puzzle Evidence from Tanzanian and Ethiopian firms

Download or read book Africa s manufacturing puzzle Evidence from Tanzanian and Ethiopian firms written by Diao, Xinshen and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2021-05-06 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent growth accelerations in Africa are characterized by increasing productivity in agriculture, a declining share of the labor force employed in agriculture and declining productivity in modern sectors such as manufacturing. To shed light on this puzzle, we disaggregate firms in the manufacturing sector by size using two newly created panels of manufacturing firms, one for Tanzania covering 2008-2016 and one for Ethiopia covering 1996-2017. Our analysis reveals a dichotomy between larger firms that exhibit superior productivity performance but do not expand employment much, and small firms that absorb employment but do not experience any productivity growth. We suggest the poor employment performance of large firms is related to use of capital-intensive techniques associated with global trends in technology.

In addition to this, the study develops lessons from East Asian countries as best experience to know the way they have followed to achieve export product diversification with less than three decades. The research conducts Herfindahl-Hirschman index to see the degree of export product diversification, balanced panel data to examine determinants of export product diversification using GLS random effect model and descriptive statistics for the year 1995-2014. The statistical data collected from WDI, UNCTAD, ERCA, NBE and ADI data bases. The study also conducts Huasman specification test to select the best model for the study and Breusch-Peagan test to check the existence of heteroscedasticity and used one year lag-values in log form to detect the endogeneity problems and some of the variables like labor force and saving effect may not observed immediately on diversification. According to the finding, the HHI for east African countries export product diversification shows as they concentrated on few products. However it shows an improvements from year to year with gradual changes. In 1995-2014 Ethiopia, Rwanda and Ugandan export highly concentrated but since 2001 Ethiopia and Uganda export performance shows moderately improved compare to the previous years. The regression result of the study suggests that exchange rate, gross domestic saving, inflation, PGDP, openness to trade, labor force and foreign direct investment suggests as they have positive contribution to export diversification. Likely, the regression result of labor force showing the highest relatively compare to other explanatory variables. [...]
