Substantial gains occurred in the rice acreage of North America, notably the United States and Cuba, where larger crops are being harvested. The forecast of rice acreage in Cuba shows a pronounced increase, and with continued good weather, the crop will be larger than in 1952 by about 100 million pounds (rough rice basis). Beet sugar production may exceed a record million short tons, raw value, during 1953-5h, or million tons greater than last season's crop and.more than 700 thousand tons greater than the former record crop of 1951-52. Increased production is anticipated in every area of the world except for the U. S. S.r. The bulk of the increase is centered in lurope where continued favorable weather'bee increased beet yields and sugar content in almost every country except Spain and Italy. Saskatchewan had out about 83 percent of its acreage of these grains and thrashed about 63 percent. Least progress had been made in Alberta, where cutting was the same percentage asfiin Saskatchewan, but threshing had been completed on only 53 percent of the acreage. According to latest information received from.the'u. S. Consulate General at Rabat the preliminary citrus production estimates in French Morocco for the current season (oct. 1, l95h -june 30, l955) are 7, 335, 000 boxes. This is an increase of 27 percent, compared with the 1953-5 production of 5, 769, 000 boxes. The 1953 -5h crop was below expectations on account of adverse weather conditions.. Hot desert winds, various diseases and hail storms reduced the size of the crop and lowered the quality of the fruit. The Government prohibits the export of low quality fruit. In implementing the government's 1952-53 purchase program in North Brazil the Bankzof Brazil, acting as an agent for the government was permit ed to make loans up to 80 percent of the support price for various types of cotton. If such loans are not redeemed within a specified time (6 months with optionto renew for an additional 6 months), the Bank pays the remaining-20 percent and acquires ownership. The price established under this support program ranges from A9 to 71'u.s. Cents per pound, depending upon staple length. Sales to mills must be at or above the support price.
