In implementing the government's 1952-53 purchase program in North Brazil the Bankzof Brazil, acting as an agent for the government was permit ed to make loans up to 80 percent of the support price for various types of cotton. If such loans are not redeemed within a specified time (6 months with optionto renew for an additional 6 months), the Bank pays the remaining-20 percent and acquires ownership. The price established under this support program ranges from A9 to 71'u.s. Cents per pound, depending upon staple length. Sales to mills must be at or above the support price. Italy and.spain also had an exceptionally hot summer. As harvest started in all countries it was discovered that the damage from.weather was much less than had at first been expected and the second largest crop on record was at hand. The remaining stocks of the 1951 harvest almonds in the Mediterranean Basin as the 1951-52 season came to a close were greatly reduced from those on hand in June. It is now estimated that not more than tons remain, compared.with tons a year ago at the same time. The present stock figure represents 10 percent of the 1951 harvest compared with 8 percent a year earlier. Spain is estimated to have h,900 tons of the total; however, recent reports from.leading foreign importing countries Endicate that most of this tonnage has been sold and will be shipped at an early date. Only Finland, Norway, the United Kingdom and Yugoslavia show smaller crops. The total for Western eur-ops as a whole is estimated at million bushels compared with 302 million in 1951-52 and the prewar average of 289 million bushels. Although information is not complete for all countries, the production of apples excluding cider apples for Western Europe is indicated at million bushels against 212 million the previous year and the prewar average of 126 million. Because of a sharp increase in apple production in Japan, the total for 5819 rose from 18 million to 31 million bushels between 1951 and 1952. This is about double the prewar average of 16 million bushels. In South America the current crop is up slightly while in Oceania it is down slightly from a year earlier. The pear crop for North America, estimated at around 33 million bushels shows little change from the previous year's output.
