This is a somewhat larger percentage than last year, but these imports are about 840 million pounds less than the l93h-38 average. Although the United Kingdom's domestic production of meat increased about 18 percent in l9h9, the deficiency in home output in terms of prewar average amounts to around 820 million pounds. In other wards, the meat supply available to the United Kingdom in l9h9 was around 1.6'billion pounds less than the aver age quantity of supplies available, in the l93h-38 period: The supply situation was further complicated.by the increase in population of nearly 3 million, or 6 percent, which meant that the British per capita meat consumption was 9h pounds in i9h9, compared with 12h pounds in prewar.
