Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foreign Crops and Markets, Vol. 44: January 26, 1942 Corn is produced in the Netherlands Indies primariby'for domestic consumption as food, and surplus supplies are not thrown on the market until the needs of the producers are covered. Exports usually represent only about 5 percent of the total production. But they play an important part in the corn industry, and local prices are quick tozneflect any changes in export prospects. Prior to the freezing of Japanese credits in July 1941, most of the corn exported went to Japan. Where it Was used largelytfor poultry and livestock'feed. Consequently, a virtual monopoly was exercised by Japan over the corn exported from the Netherlands Indies. To offset this situation, special laws were passed in the Netherlands to give preference to colonial imports over those from cheaper sources. While never entirely successful, considerable corn was diverted to the mother country in years of large harvests, such as 1936 and 1937, which helped to support export prices in those years, Shipments to other coun tries have been relatively unimportant, but large quantities went to China early in 1941 as a result of the Japanese occupation of Indochina. During the past 4 years, dry weather is reported to have reduced yields. Considerable expansion in seedings for 1942 is believed to have taken place, but no estimate of acreage has been re ceived. 'jith the standard of living advancing as new roads are being constructed into the interior, the consumption of wheat is said to be rapidly increasing. Imports were large in 1938 and 1989, for which years no production estimates are available, but fell off in 1941 followe ing the 1940 cr0p of over 5 million bushels. Although stocks on hand early in 1942 were not large, it was believed that the immediate concern over supplies resulted largely from the fear that future shipping Space would be difficult to obtain. Uontrary to many latin-american countries, Colomoia generally imports wheat in the form of grain rather than flour. Most of it originates in the United States and Canada.
