Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foreign Crops and Markets, Vol. 41: September 9, 1940 Increased shipments to the United Kingdom, Portugal, and the Netherlands failed to offset the loss in exports to Japan, Germany, and other countries. During the 11 months, august-june 1939-40, total exports of cotton from Peru were 3 percent below the corresponding 11 months a year earlier. Shipments to the United Kingdom, the leading market, were the highest on record and represented 61 percent of total exports. The loss of Germany as a market for Peruvian cotton was partially offset by increased shipments to the United Kingdom, Japan, and Italy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foreign Crops and Markets, Vol. 41: November 2, 1940 Figures covering the total world Wheat acreage this season are even more uncertain than world crop estimates on account of the lack of data for many countries and because some countries have not yet reported the areas harvested or for harvest. In the case of China, the 1933-1937 figures published.by the International Institute of.agricu1ture, though used as a basis for arriving at'estimates for subsequent years, appear somewhat high. All things considered, however, the.tota1 area devoted to wheat for the 1940-41 crop appears to have been in the neighborhood of 407 million acres. This indicates a decrease of 1.5.percent frmn the 1939 4o acreage, around.5 percent from that of 1938-39, but a zspercent increase over the average of the five seasons, 1908-34 to 1927-38. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foreign Crops and Markets, Vol. 41: September 3, 1940 Early harvesting returns of the 1939-40 corn crop are reported to have substantiated the June production estimate of 319 million bushels. The quality of the grain was, however, somewhat reduced by the heavy rains of June and July in the Provinces of Santa Fe and Cordoba, where corn cribs are mostly uncovered, and shelling has been generally delayed. The surplus available for export was officially estimated on.august 16 at about 283 million bushels, which is in line with current trade statistics and estimated domestic requirements. Exports have been greatly reduced this season as a result of the European.war, but the price fixed for Government purchases will assure the farmer returns above the level of domestic quotations since the beginning of the marketing year. As the season advances and the situation is eased, deliveries in larger amounts will be permitted. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foreign Crops and Markets, Vol. 41: July 29, 1940 Arrivals of native wheat in Shanghai increased considerably in July compared with June. During the past 2 weeks arrivals have averaged about bushels daily but little has been permitted to enter the internationally controlled areas in Shanghai. Japanese companies operat ing appropriated Chinese mills outside the foreign-controlled areas have purchased approximately bushels of new-crop domestic wheat. Chinese mills located in the international settlement have been able to secure only small quantities oi wheat and have been required to pay from 5 to 6 cents a bushel above the-market price in order to obtain wheat. At the present time Chinese mills at Shanghai are reported to be opera ting at about 15 percent of capacity, and Japanese-operated mills are running at about 80 percent of capacity; Two cargoes of American wheat were reported early in July booked for Shanghai at about 81 cents per bushel, c.i.f. Exports of flour, which were restricted during the season by the Government, were estimated at nearly 8 million barrels, against 2. 3 millions in the previous year. About two - thirds went to Manchuria and one-third to North China.
