Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foreign Crops and Markets, Vol. 36: March 26, 1938 Among the most difficult obstacles encountered by our agricultural exports to Czechoslovakia have been the exchange - control and import permit systems. Early in 1937, the exchange control was abolished. Under the agreement just concluded, the import-permit system has been retained; but assurance has been given the United States that in respect to agri cultural products not under quota these permits will be issued freely and in accordance with the demand for the products in Czechoslovakia. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foreign Crops and Markets, Vol. 36: May 14, 1938 About two - thirds of the Nyasaland crop is fire-cured, grown by natives in the Northern Province, and used in the United Kingdom for pipe mixtures. The fire-cured crop averages about 12 million pounds annually. When the question of tobacco auctions for this crop was first considered, difficult problems arese. As the baskets brought in by natives contained only small amounts, it was obviously impossible to auction each basket separately. The situation was met by the Native Tobacco Board, which agreed to purchase all tobacco at a fixed price, bale it, and turn it over to the auctioneer for disposal. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foreign Crops and Markets, Vol. 36: April 30, 1938 A.feature of the 1937 year was the high degree of substitution in many countries of other products for olive oil because of the short olive crop of 1936 and the consequent high priceso It is possible that some of the markets that turned to cheaper oils, such as peanut oil, will revert to olive-oil consumption but slowly, particularly since several of them are not enjoying very favorable economic conditions. In the important olive-oil producing countries, especially in years of high yields, the governments either restrict or exclude imports of other oils, but in such areas as France, French Morocco, and Syria the price factor is likely to be decisive in determining consumption. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foreign Crops and Markets, Vol. 36: February 12, 1938 British imports of Russian wheat reached. 15, 200, 000 bus chels from, August through December 1937 against none in the corresponding period in 1936, according to Agricultural Attache C. C. Taylor at London. The receipts from the Soviet Union have made up for a large part of the shortage of Canadian wheat, imports of Which were 28, 400, 000 bushels smaller in the 1937 peried than a year earlier. Trade reports indicate a preference for the Russian product as a substitute for strong Canadian wheat. Imports from the United States, amounting to million bushels from August through December against practically none in 1936, replaced most of the remaining Canadian deficiency. Imports from Australia, India, and other sources during this period were about the same as in the corresponding months of 1936. Receipts from Argentina were unimportant in both periods. British wheat requirements during the early part of the season were slightly smaller than those of a year earlier. Total imports in the first 5 months of the current season, at bushels, were million bushels smaller than the comparable 1936-37 figures. British port stocks as of August 1, 1937, were 3 million bushels lower than a year earlier, and production in the United Kingdom in 1937 was_about the same as in 1936. There is no evidence that wheat reserves are being ao cumulated in the United Kingdom. Trade sources have indicated that early receipts from the United States this season were below quality require ments and were discriminated against as to prices. Later shipments, how ever, exhibited decidedly better quality. Sales of Australian wheat for future delivery at prices advantageous to buyers have been reported, the disturbed Oriental mark ets having made the British market somewhat more attractive than usual.
