The official estimate of exportable surplus, which was then placed at bushels, if increased in accordance with the increase in production, would be about bushels or greater than actual exports in any past year so far as they are recorded. Last year the total exportable surplus for the season on the basis of the second production estimate was while actual exports for the season April to march were bushels. Actual exports for the current year may be cut down somewhat, however, by a greater domestic de 'mand.than usual for corn to supplement the poor pasturage caused by the drought of the past few months. As North and South America constitute the chief sources of supply at present, however, prices and expected to remain firm. Consular reports from Antwerp show that although Belgian Wheat mills in December were operating regularly, they purchased supplies of wheat sufficient only to fill their immediate requirements. During the first week in January the market also continued calm. There was a slight decline in prices during the week, the transactions centering chiefly in Manitoba wheat, though orders were also booked for Kansas and for Russian Wheat Floating positions were not very large. Trade on the Danubian markets was more active, with Hungary selling wheat to Italy and Turkey, and Yugoslavia selling to Greece and Bessarabia, The fact that Bessarabia is buying wheat tends to confirm Mr. Steere's opinion that the Rumanian crop has been overestimated. The price of wheat at Hamburg rose from per bushel on January 2 to $l.u5 on January 10, but this increase was confined to the Hamburg markets and was probably due to the difficulty in covering export. Sales because of the frozen river. The price of rye at Berlin rose one cent per bushel during the week to per bushel on January 10. The items showing the greatest increases in value in 1924-25 over 1923-24 are rubber, coffee and wool. All three of these commodities have had a higher unit value in the past year than in the year before and in the case of coffee there was a decrease of lbs. In imports with an increase of in value. The only commodity showing a large absolute decrease in value was sugar. For this commodity the unit value was lower, so that ime ports increased short tons while decreasing in value.
