At only 12 percent of the prewar level, it is not quite able to maintain the per capita con sumption of prewar days. According to the summary, nearly all parts of the world have contributed toward the upward trend in agricultural production; but the greatest advance of all has been made in North America, which now produces 50 percent more than in the prewar years. Latin America is producing'30 percent more. The least progress has probably been made in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe; in the latter, produc tion is still below the prewar level. Western Europe has made substantial increases and is now well above its prewar production. The Middle East is producing substantially more than it did before the war and has a good supply of grain for feed, food, and forage. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foreign Agriculture, Vol. 24: May 1960 This issue is dedicated to our friends of the Netherlands, a genial people who live in a unique country. Robert H. Reed, for many years editor of the farm magazine, Country Gentleman, and currently our agricultural attach to the Neth erlands, writes the first two articles: The Netherlands: Little Country, Big Market, and The Dutch Polders: Eighth Wonder of the World. In these articles we think he has succeeded in capturing the spirit of a brave and persistent people who have literally pushed back the sea and made themselves one of the great agricultural countries of the world. Our cover is also a tribute to the Dutch people. Fifteen years ago, at the end of World War II the Port of Rotterdam was all but destroyed. Today, it is one of Europe's most modern ports, and ranks as the leading transshipment point in the world. Through this and other Dutch ports every year flows an enormous agricultural trade. Some $250 mil lion worth of farm products comes from the United States alone. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Foreign Agriculture Vol 7 written by Office Of Foreign Agricultura Relations and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-14 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foreign Agriculture, Vol. 7: A Review of Foreign Farm Policy, Production, and Trade; January, 1943 The expansion of the crop area of Australia was practically uninterrupted from 1860 to 1915-16 when, as a result of a Special effort to raise more food during the world war of 1914-18, million acres were cultivated. Thereafter the cropland was subjected to sharp fluctuations; it reached a low of million in 1919 - 20 and a peak of 25 million acres in 1930-31. In 1938-39 the crop area was estimated at million acres. The fluctuations are due to the fact that wheat is the crop most extensively grown in Australia, and material changes in the total area of crops are largely a reflection of variations in the acreage sown to this cereal. Ch the whole, the crop acreage accounts for only 1 percent of the total area of Australia. Yet, despite the relatively small area, there are over 3 cultivated acres per inhabitant. This compares favorably with such a country as the United States. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
