Book excerpt: This Technical Note discusses the findings and recommendations made in the Financial Sector Assessment Program for Japan in the areas of regulation and supervision of securities firms. The supervision of the two major Japanese securities groups and the Japanese subsidiaries of global banking groups deserves special attention, given the domestic and cross-border interconnectedness of these firms. The authorities should continue to ensure that the supervisory teams for the major Japanese groups have access to sufficient number of experienced staff. It is also important to continue to enhance the existing international cooperation in the supervision of Japanese firms’ overseas operations and foreign-owned firms’ activities in Japan.

Book Japan s Foreign Relations

Download or read book Japan s Foreign Relations written by Robert S. Ozaki and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-07 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After World War II, Japan reemerged in the arena of international relations as an almost exclusively economic power without military might or territorial ambitions. Within some thirty years it transformed itself from a semideveloped state to a technological superpower with an economy that today is the second largest in the free world, next only to the United States, accounting for over 10 percent of total global production. The management of a rapidly growing industrial state with little domestic supply of resources necessarily requires great skill in the difficult task of maintaining sufficient access to overseas markets to sustain internal economic activity. Not surprisingly, then, Japan's foreign relations from World War II to the present have been heavily conditioned by economic considerations. This collection of original articles investigates how the economic growth of Japan has affected the pattern of its foreign relations and where and to what extent economic principles have had to be compromised for political, legal, cultural, or ideological reasons. The contributors, experts on Japan's economy, politics, and foreign relations, analyze the state of Japan's foreign relations with North America, the EC, Oceania, the Soviet Union, COMECON, China, ASEAN, the Middle East, Latin America, Africa, Korea, and Taiwan, focusing on developments in the last seven years and predicting likely trends in the 1980s.

Book Japanese Investment in the World Economy

Download or read book Japanese Investment in the World Economy written by Roger Farrell and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the title suggests, this is an ambitious book. Broad in scope and rich in detail, it examines the rise and fall of Japanese foreign direct investment (FDI) in nearly two dozen industries, from electronics and automobile manufacturing to real estate and construction services, in almost every region of the world over the past half century or more. The result is an encyclopedic volume (459 pages with index). . . useful for East Asian business scholars or those interested in the overseas activities of Japanese firms. Farrell has written. . . a sweeping survey of Japanese FDI. Walter Hatch, Journal of Japanese Studies Roger Farrell has written a weighty compendium on Japanese direct foreign investment. At over 450 pages it covers the full array of Japan s diverse industries and sectors, from fisheries and lumber to steel and automobiles, and in the service industries from banking to telecommunications. Apart from the breadth of coverage, this work is even more remarkable considering that Japanese multinationals and their overseas investments have been largely under the radar of social scientists of late, especially so since the ascent of China in the early years of the present decade. David W. Edgington, Growth and Change Enhanced with indexes, appendixes, and editorial opinions on the subject, Japanese Investment in the World Economy is a complete and comprehensive scholarly reference, ideal for college and community library economics collections. Midwest Book Review The Economics Shelf This book examines Japanese Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the world economy over more than five decades. It provides a unique focus on the internationalisation experience of selected industries, such as forestry, textiles, electronics, motor vehicles, steel and services as well as case studies of individual firms. Roger Farrell considers the theoretical explanations for Japanese FDI and particular motivations which have been an ongoing rationale for FDI, including: energy and resource security the theme of retaining market access the relocation of manufacturing to retain international competitiveness withdrawal after the bubble economy the new phase of investment in the 2000s. Japanese Investment in the World Economy is distinctive in that it examines overseas investment by firms in the primary, manufacturing and services sectors over the period in which the Japanese economy became the second largest in the world. The book provides a succinct overview of Japanese FDI of interest to professionals and students of business, economics, international relations, politics and Japanese culture.

Book Global Offerings of Securities

Download or read book Global Offerings of Securities written by Alan Paley and published by Springer. This book was released on 1994 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book serves as an introduction to a recent development in the world's capital markets: the rapid increase in global offerings of securities. It explores four different approaches that can be adopted in trying to accomplish multinational offerings of securities in a world where different countries have very different regulatory approaches to the offering and trading of securities, namely: full compliance with requirements of multiple legal systems (registered public offerings in multiple jurisdictions); avoidance of the most burdensome requirements (private placements and other exemptions); reconciliation (permissive regulatory exemptions in one country, including hand-tailored exemptions or by rule); deferral to one country's rules (i.e. of the country with dominant contacts with the issuer).
