Book Environmental Analyses in Marine Fisheries Research

Download or read book Environmental Analyses in Marine Fisheries Research written by G. H. Tomczak and published by Bernan Press(PA). This book was released on 1977 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first part of the paper the relationships of the behaviour and population biology of marine fishes to environmental conditions are reviewed indicating the kinds of oceanographic data which are useful to fishermen and fishery managers. The general characteristics of the services needed to provide such information are considered along with methods of obtaining the data needed quickly and efficiently. Ten examples of operating environmental services of various countries are discussed in detail in the second part of the paper, along with a review of other services, either proposed or implemented, for which less detailed information is available.

Book Seasonal to Decadal Prediction of Marine Ecosystems Opportunities Approaches and Applications

Download or read book Seasonal to Decadal Prediction of Marine Ecosystems Opportunities Approaches and Applications written by Mark R. Payne and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2019-06-28 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tremendous advances in oceanographic observing and modeling systems over the last decade have led to unprecedented developments in the nature of information available to marine science. While improvements in observational technologies and networks have garnered much attention, remarkable developments in forecasting the ocean have received much less focus. Exploiting this new predictive skill to improve scientific understanding, generate advice and aid in the management of marine resources, is emerging as one of the new challenges of marine science. Translating predictions of the physical environment into biological outcomes, however, is not straightforward. Fisheries scientists, for example, have been trying to understand the links between physics and biology, and generate predictions of variables such as recruitment, for close to a century, with limited success. Nevertheless, spatial distributions and the timing of key events, which have received less focus, are often tightly linked to the physical environment and may have management-relevant applications. The first-such forecasts based on this skill are now starting to emerge. This Frontiers in Marine Science Research Topic provides a snapshot of the state-of-the-art in Marine Ecological Prediction. It covers the opportunities for developing such forecasts, technical approaches that could be employed, and examples where the technology is already being applied. This body of work therefore marks an important milestone on the route to developing this new and exciting field of marine science.

Book Fisheries and Aquaculture Volume V

Download or read book Fisheries and Aquaculture Volume V written by Patrick Safran and published by EOLSS Publications. This book was released on 2009-10-27 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fisheries and Aquaculture theme is a component of Encyclopedia of Food and Agricultural Sciences, Engineering and Technology Resources in the global Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems (EOLSS), which is an integrated compendium of twenty one Encyclopedias. Fisheries are a major life support system and the main purpose of this theme on Fisheries and Aquaculture is to provide baseline information and latest knowledge at the dawn of this century to facilitate vital fisheries recovery before their irreparable collapse. This Theme on Fisheries and Aquaculture is divided into five topics. It starts with discussions on major issues and challenges in “Harvesting the Seas”, with emphasis on the role and importance of the fisheries sector and its environment, and introduces trends and perspectives in marine fisheries, including allocation of use rights, subsidies, and port management. The next two topics present an in-depth and detailed knowledge on fish and other aquatic living resources that are commercially exploited and/or farmed. The third topic on Inland Fisheries presents salmonid fish, eels, shad, whitefish and smelt, carp, perch, pike and bass, tilapia, frog, and crustaceans. The fourth topic presents a comprehensive review of trends and perspectives in Aquaculture: Principles and Prospects. The fifth topic on Economics of Fisheries and Aquaculture reviews the latest views and concepts useful to apprehend the fisheries management regime, including a comparative static economic theory and a dynamic theory of fishery, spatial bioeconomic dynamics and role of international law in the management of marine fisheries, rights-based and community fisheries management, aquaculture economics, and game theory and fisheries. These five volumes are aimed at the following five major target audiences: University and College Students Educators, Professional Practitioners, Research Personnel and Policy Analysts, Managers, and Decision Makers, NGOs and GOs.
