Download or read book Gerald Ford and the Challenges of the 1970s written by Yanek Mieczkowski and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2005-04-22 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A reappraisal of the brief presidency of Gerald Ford, called to leadership in the midst of scandal, stagflation, and an energy crisis. For many Americans, Gerald Ford evokes an image of either an unelected president who abruptly pardoned his corrupt predecessor or an accident-prone klutz spoofed on Saturday Night Live. In this book, Yanek Mieczkowski reexamines Ford’s two and a half years in office, showing that his presidency successfully confronted the most vexing crisis of the postwar era. Viewing the 1970s primarily through the lens of economic events, Mieczkowski argues that Ford’s understanding of the national economy was better than any modern president’s; that he oversaw a dramatic reduction of inflation; and that he attempted to solve the energy crisis with judicious policies. Throughout his presidency, Ford labored under the legacy of Watergate. Democrats scored landslide victories in the 1974 midterm elections, and within an anemic Republican Party, the right wing challenged Ford’s leadership, even as pundits predicted the GOP’s death. Yet Ford reinvigorated the party and fashioned a 1976 campaign strategy against Jimmy Carter that brought him from thirty points behind to a dead heat on election day. Drawing on numerous personal interviews with former President Ford, cabinet officials, and members of the Ninety-fourth Congress, Mieczkowski presents the first major work on Ford in more than a decade, combining the best of biography and presidential history to paint an intriguing portrait of a president, his times, and his legacy. “This ambitious work calls for a reexamination of the Ford presidency in light of the formidable challenges he faced upon taking office. A welcome and important addition to the literature on the Ford presidency.” ―Library Journal

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the time, in 1978, when The Cars That Henry Ford Built was first published, sending a copy for Henry Ford II to review seemed a vain request·Automobile Quarterly founding editor and publisher L. Scott Bailey was told that Mr. Ford (never comments on a book written about Ford.÷ Two weeks later came an unexpected exhortation from Henry Ford II: (My grandfather would have loved this book.÷ Ford then specially ordered 20 copies bound in white leather·needed in two weeks. The rush order was necessitated by an upcoming trip to Japan. As is culturally customary to offer a gift that honors one's ancestors, Henry Ford II specifically chose The Cars That Henry Ford Built to give to his Japanese hosts. Such high-level praise is derived from the book's fresh approach to the subject of Henry Ford, both in its study of the man and his cars, as well as the exceptional pictorial presentation. Presented for the first time in full color, there is every model Henry Ford produced from the Quadricycle he put together as a young man in 1896 to the famous V8 Ford on the production lines four and a half decades later during his failing years. Probably no other individual in automobile history more accurately mirrored in his cars his view of himself and of America as he saw it. Join award-winning historian and author Beverly Rae Kimes as she presents lively historical text that captures Henry growing and aging as his cars grew and aged, each lock-stepped together through history. Over 100 full-color photographs further bring the man and his creations to life.
Download or read book Blood Highways written by Adam L. Penenberg and published by Wayzgoose Press. This book was released on 2014-01-07 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blood Highways is the heart-wrenching account of the biggest product liability case in history: the Ford-Firestone fiasco. At the center of the story are two people: Tab Turner, a charismatic trial attorney from Arkansas, who has made a career out of forcing Ford and other automakers to own up to knowingly trade human lives for profits; and Donna Bailey, a single mother and outdoor enthusiast who fought back from the brink of death to confront those ultimately responsible for her accident. Weaving together harrowing depictions of the accidents and their consequences with the stories of the men and women who labor to police the auto industry and its reckless cost-cutting, Blood Highways will transform the way you view corporations, the government, the courts, and the media. Above all, this book shows the price the public pays in wrecked and mangled lives when companies focus more on shaving costs than making quality products.
