There, those keywords capture the journey of thirty-nine years. My grandfather, Dr. Minahshi Sundaram, was a retired state assistant director of Public Heath, Madras (now Tamil Nadu), India. He would have been proud of me. He was one of the earliest Ford Model T owners in the city of Madras (now Chennai). We used to have fun starting the car using the iron rod in the shape of a T, inserting in the crankshaft from the front and rotating it round and round with force till the car started! Actually, my favorite car color is black. Many have been influenced by the well-known quote of Henry Ford, the founder, "Any color is all right, as long as it is black!" Also, I have bought only Ford cars during the last forty years from the same dealer Gene Butman Ford in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Mike Pluta has been our sales person for several years. Everybody there knows me and stops by to chat, including Mr. Butman himself and his two sons when my car is in the service shop. I became a founding member of the Ford Running Club (still very active), along with four others, and we would participate in Ford Corporate Cup annual event. Ford team has won the championship many times. It was a wonderful way to meet fellow ford engineers-men and women-in a social setting. Summer 2017, I won the 5K for men 70-74. It was a part of the annual corporate cup held in Belle Isle, Detroit. I have done that several times before. Ford won the cup again; but next day, they updated results, showing we finished as a runner-up, missing by a whisker. In 1980, I joined the Washtenaw Toastmasters (WTM) in my home, Ann Arbor. A member of the Toastmasters International, an organization to develop leadership in people through communication skills. Later, I started a toastmaster's club at Ford called, the Ford Accelerators. We used to meet at lunch time in the Build 5 conference room, facing the circle between Buildings 5 and 3 in Dearborn, along Rotunda Drive Even though I am retired from Ford, I am still an active participant in both Ford Running Club and WTM in my home, Ann Arbor.

Book excerpt: Ford's 351 Cleveland was designed to be a "mid-sized" V-8 engine, and was developed for higher performance use upon its launch in late 1969 for the 1970 models. The Cleveland engine addressed the major shortcoming of the Windsor engines that preceded it, namely cylinder head air flow. The Windsor engines just couldn't be built at the time to compete effectively with the strongest GM and Mopar small-block offerings, and the Cleveland engine was the answer to that problem. Unfortunately, the Cleveland engine was introduced at the end of Detroit's muscle car era, and the engine, in pure Cleveland form, was very short lived. It did continue on as a low compression passenger car and truck engine in the form of the 351M and 400M, which in their day, offered little in the way of excitement. Every manufacturer had at least one corner of the showroom where the "go fast" guys could congregate and discuss the merits and time slips of the latest performance offerings. The result was a wildly popular model that sold more than 70,000 units, compared to slightly more than 5,000 GT models for the year. Book excerpt: The controversial British writer Ford Madox Ford (1873-1939) is increasingly recognized as a major presence in early twentieth-century literature. This series of International Ford Madox Ford Studies was founded to reflect the recent resurgence of interest in him. Each volume is based upon a particular theme or issue; and relates aspects of Ford’s work, life, and contacts, to broader concerns of his time. The present book is part of a large-scale reassessment of his roles in literary history. Ford is best-known for his fiction, especially The Good Soldier, long considered a modernist masterpiece; and Parade’s End, which Anthony Burgess described as ‘the finest novel about the First World War’; and Samuel Hynes has called ‘the greatest war novel ever written by an Englishman’. But he was a prolific writer in many different modes, which include criticism of others’ writing, and reminiscences of the many writers he had known. One of the most striking features of his career is his close involvement with so many of the major international literary groupings of his time. In the South-East of England at the fin-de-siècle, he collaborated for a decade with Joseph Conrad, and befriended Henry James, and H. G. Wells. In Edwardian London he founded the English Review, publishing these writers alongside his new discoveries, Ezra Pound, D. H. Lawrence, and Wyndham Lewis. After the war he moved to France, founding the transatlantic review in Paris, taking on Hemingway as a sub-editor, discovering another generation of Modernists such as Jean Rhys and Basil Bunting, and publishing them alongside Joyce and Gertrude Stein. He spent more time in America from the later 1920s, spending time with Southern Agrarians, and poets such as William Carlos Williams, Charles Olson, and Robert Lowell. He was always a tireless promoter of younger writers, reading manuscripts and recommending them to publishers. This book takes Ford’s ‘literary contacts’ to include such creative friendships, editorial involvements, and influential biographical encounters; and they form the most substantial, central section on ‘Contemporaries and Confrères’, covering figures like Proust, Carlos Williams, Rebecca West, Herbert Read, and Hemingway. But it also explores contacts with literary texts. The first section on ‘Predecessors’ considers the impact of Ford’s reading of Trollope, George Eliot, and Turgenev. The final section discusses ‘Successors’: writers such as Graham Greene, Burgess, and A. S. Byatt, whose literary contacts with Ford have been as his admiring readers and eloquent critics. Ford has been described as ‘a writer’s writer’. This volume reveals how true that has been, and in how many ways, as it sheds new light on his relationships with other writers, both familiar and surprising. It includes two pieces published here for the first time: one by Ford himself, on Turgenev; the other a memoir about Ford by his contemporary, Marie Belloc Lowndes (the sister of Hilaire Belloc).
