Book excerpt: Nonlinear dynamics has been successful in explaining complicated phenomena in well-defined low-dimensional systems. Now it is time to focus on real-life problems that are high-dimensional or ill-defined, for example, due to delay, spatial extent, stochasticity, or the limited nature of available data. How can one understand the dynamics of such sys

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lawrence Sirovich will turn seventy on March 1, 2003. Larry's academic life of over 45 years at the Courant Institute, Brown University, Rockefeller University and the Mount Sinai School of Medicine has touched many peo ple and several disciplines, from fluid dynamics to brain theory. His con tributions to the kinetic theory of gases, methods of applied mathematics, theoretical fluid dynamics, hydrodynamic turbulence, the biophysics of vi sion and the dynamics of neuronal populations, represent the creative work of an outstanding scholar who was stimulated mostly by insatiable curios ity. As a scientist, Larry has consistently offered fresh outlooks on classical and difficult subjects, and moved into new fields effortlessly. He delights in what he knows and does, and sets no artificial boundaries to the range of his inquiry. Among the more than fifty or so Ph. D. students and post docs that he has mentored, many continue to make first-rate contributions themselves and hold academic positions in the US and elsewhere. Larry's scientific collaborators are numerous and distinguished. Those of us who have known him well will agree that Larry's charm, above all, is his taste, wit, and grace under fire. Larry has contributed immensely to mathematics publishing. He be gan his career with Springer by founding the Applied Mathematical Sci ences series together with Fritz John and Joe LaSalle some 30 years ago. Later he co-founded the Texts in Applied Mathematics series and more re cently the Interdisciplinary Applied Mathematics series.

Download or read book Bifurcation Theory and Spatio Temporal Pattern Formation written by Wayne Nagata and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2006-10-03 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonlinear dynamical systems and the formation of spatio-temporal patterns play an important role in current research on partial differential equations. This book contains articles on topics of current interest in applications of dynamical systems theory to problems of pattern formation in space and time. Topics covered include aspects of lattice dynamical systems, convection in fluid layers with large aspect ratios, mixed mode oscillations and canards, bacterial remediation of waste, gyroscopic systems, data clustering, and the second part of Hilbert's 16th problem. Most of the book consists of expository survey material, and so can serve as a source of convenient entry points to current research topics in nonlinear dynamics and pattern formation. This volume arose from a workshop held at the Fields Institute in December of 2003, honoring Professor William F. Langford's fundamental work on the occasion of his sixtieth birthday. Information for our distributors: Titles in this series are copublished with the Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences (Toronto, Ontario, Canada).

Download or read book Strange Nonchaotic Attractors Dynamics Between Order And Chaos In Quasiperiodically Forced Systems written by Arkady S Pikovsky and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2006-04-26 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first monograph devoted exclusively to strange nonchaotic attractors (SNA), recently discovered objects with a special kind of dynamical behavior between order and chaos in dissipative nonlinear systems under quasiperiodic driving. A historical review of the discovery and study of SNA, mathematical and physically-motivated examples, and a review of known experimental studies of SNA are presented. The main focus is on the theoretical analysis of strange nonchaotic behavior by means of different tools of nonlinear dynamics and statistical physics (bifurcation analysis, Lyapunov exponents, correlations and spectra, renormalization group). The relations of the subject to other fields of physics such as quantum chaos and solid state physics are also discussed.

Book excerpt: There has been developing interest in the aspects of fluid mechanics and of magnetohydrodynamics that can be properly described as topological, rather than exclusively analytical in character. This book contains the proceedings of the IUTAM symposium on Topological Fluid Mechanics held at Cambridge UK, 13-18 August, 1989. Download or read book Stochastic Processes in Cell Biology written by Paul C. Bressloff and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-08-22 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book develops the theory of continuous and discrete stochastic processes within the context of cell biology. A wide range of biological topics are covered including normal and anomalous diffusion in complex cellular environments, stochastic ion channels and excitable systems, stochastic calcium signaling, molecular motors, intracellular transport, signal transduction, bacterial chemotaxis, robustness in gene networks, genetic switches and oscillators, cell polarization, polymerization, cellular length control, and branching processes. The book also provides a pedagogical introduction to the theory of stochastic process – Fokker Planck equations, stochastic differential equations, master equations and jump Markov processes, diffusion approximations and the system size expansion, first passage time problems, stochastic hybrid systems, reaction-diffusion equations, exclusion processes, WKB methods, martingales and branching processes, stochastic calculus, and numerical methods. This text is primarily aimed at graduate students and researchers working in mathematical biology and applied mathematicians interested in stochastic modeling. Applied probabilists and theoretical physicists should also find it of interest. It assumes no prior background in statistical physics and introduces concepts in stochastic processes via motivating biological applications. The book is highly illustrated and contains a large number of examples and exercises that further develop the models and ideas in the body of the text. It is based on a course that the author has taught at the University of Utah for many years.
