Book excerpt: Excerpt from Force and Matter: Or Principles of the Natural Order of the Universe, With a System of Morality Based Thereon To the dialectician the world is an idea, to the bel esprit a picture, to the enthusiast a dream, to the scientist alone it is a truth. - Orges. The criterion of a true philosopher is that he is not a professor of philosophy. The plainest truths are those precisely upon which man hits last of all. - Ludwig Feuerbach. Experience and observation must be our sole guides; we meet with them in the case of physicians who have been philosophers, but not in the case of philosophers who have not been physicians. - Lamettrib. We must have facts and a positive philosophy, based upon nature and reason. - H. Tuttle. And if the inscription on the ancient pyramid of Sai'ssays, "I am all that is, that was, and that will be; no mortal man has yet raised my veil," it might be replied thereto: "Modern science has removed the veil and has discovered that Force and Matter were, are, and will be. - F. J. Pisko. The number of errors is unlimited, truth alone is but one. - Ph. Spiller. It nettles men to find that truth should be so simple. - Goethe. Book The Law of Nature Or Principles of Morality Deduced From the Physical Constitution of Mankind and the Universe

Download or read book The Law of Nature Or Principles of Morality Deduced From the Physical Constitution of Mankind and the Universe written by C-F 1757-1820 Volney and published by Legare Street Press. This book was released on 2023-07-18 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a groundbreaking exploration of the relationship between morality and human nature, based on principles of the French Enlightenment. The book argues that human nature is the basis of morality, and that the principles of natural law can be deduced from the study of human anatomy, physiology, and psychology. The book also offers a critique of traditional religious and philosophical systems of ethics, and advocates for a new, rational approach to morality that is grounded in scientific principles. With its bold and innovative ideas, The Law of Nature is a classic work of Enlightenment thought. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Book On the Moral Nature of the Universe

Download or read book On the Moral Nature of the Universe written by Nancey C. Murphy and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ellis and Murphy show how contemporary sciences actually support a religiously based ethic of nonviolence, not by appealing to the Enlightment's mechanismic Creator God or revelation's Father God but by discerning the transcendent ground in the laws of nature, the emergence of intelligent freedom, and the echoes of "knoetic" self-giving in cosmology and biology.

Book The Ethics of Cosmology

Download or read book The Ethics of Cosmology written by John C. Caiazza and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the last one hundred years, the scientific conception of the universe has undergone radical change. As a result a new field has evolved, called "cosmology," that examines the philosophical and scientific nature of the universe. Cosmology conceives of a material universe in which the interior of atoms do not act in the same predictable manner as the objects we can see and in which space is no longer empty volume unaffected by the matter within it. The universe is not a machine that operates with the same set of rules, but rather a living, growing organism. This new cosmology is forcing a consideration of the meaning of life that also calls for a reconsideration of moral law—the doctrine of natural right. Natural law theory is based on a cosmology that is grounded in classical metaphysics. John C. Caiazza uses the term "natural right" rather than "natural law" since his argument for cosmic teleology is based on the cosmology of contemporary science and not that of classical metaphysics. If evolution and development are the key to understanding nature, it is important to get the evolutionary concept of nature right, especially when it involves ethics. The universe can be viewed in two ways. One can admire the intricacy of the cosmological process on the physical, chemical, and astronomical levels. Or, one can look at this process as a result of design or providence. These two options should not preclude each other, Caiazza asserts; we should instead look closely at what science reveals about design. This volume offers an opportunity to reconcile the thinking of those who hold to traditional religious views on the origins of the universe and those who look to scientific explanations.
