Book excerpt: To uphold the "right of private judgment," and our "Christian liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free;" to add fuel to the fire of investigation, and in the crucible of deep inquiry, melt from the gold of pure religion, the dross of man's invention; to appeal from the erring tribunals of a fallible Priesthood, and restore to its original state the mutilated Testament of the Saviour; also to induce all earnest thinkers to search not a part, but the whole of the Scriptures, if therein they think they will find eternal life; I, as an advocate of free thought and untrammelled opinion, dispute the authority of those uncharitable, bickering, and ignorant Ecclesiastics who first suppressed these gospels and epistles; and I join issue with their Catholic and Protestant successors who have since excluded them from the New Testament, of which they formed a part; and were venerated by the Primitive Churches, during the first four hundred years of the Christian Era.

Book excerpt: A translation of many of the forbidden books of the Bible banned by the Council of Nicene, including the Gospels of the Infancy of Jesus, translated and published by William Wake, Archbishop of Canterbury 1716-1737. Less than a century before, William Tyndale had been executed by the church for daring to translate the Bible into English. Wake believed that many, if not most, of these passages were historically accurate, even those showing the young Jesus in a less than sympathetic light. Some of the information contained herein may have been used as source material by proponents of the Da Vinci Code and other Templar-based legends. Well formatted and reset from earlier versions, with notes and references from the translator, this book is easy to read and makes a great addition to any library of the historical and non-canonical works of Christianity. This book was released on 2018-08-02 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gospel called the Protevangelion: An Apocryphal Gospel by Archbishop Wake. Or, an Historical Account of the BIRTH of CHRIST, and the perpetual VIRGIN MARY, his Mother, by JAMES THE LESSER, Cousin and Brother of the Lord Jesus, chief Apostle and first Bishop of the Christians in Jerusalem. This Gospel is ascribed to James. The allusions to it in the ancient Fathers are frequent, and their expressions indicate that it had obtained a very general credit in the Christian world. The controversies founded upon it chiefly relate to the age of Joseph at the birth of Christ, and to his being a widower with children, before his marriage with the Virgin. The Gospel of James, also known as the Infancy Gospel of James or the Protoevangelium of James, is an apocryphal gospel probably written about AD 145, which expands backward in time the infancy stories contained in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, and presents a narrative concerning the birth and upbringing of Mary herself. It is the oldest source outside the New Testament to assert the virginity of Mary not only prior to, but during (and after) the birth of Jesus. The ancient manuscripts that preserve the book have different titles, including "The Birth of Mary", "The Story of the Birth of Saint Mary, Mother of God," and "The Birth of Mary; The Revelation of James." The New Testament apocrypha are a number of writings by early Christians that give accounts of Jesus and his teachings, the nature of God, or the teachings of his apostles and of their lives.

Book The Forbidden Books of the New Testament

Download or read book The Forbidden Books of the New Testament written by Archbishop Wake and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-12-08 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archbishop William Wake's translations of texts excluded or analogous with the Biblical New Testament remains an authoritative, well-regarded and wide-ranging source for scholars and enthusiasts of ancient Christendom. In this collection are books which detail the life of Mary the mother of Jesus Christ, and the miracles performed by the infant Christ. A further book details the childhood of Jesus, together with his later interactions with various individuals important or incidental to the New Testament narrative. Later in the text we encounter the various epistles such as the Magnesians, Romans, Trallians and Philadelphians. Some of these writings appear to be intended as a supplement to the existing books of the New Testament, rather than as entirely distinct books in themselves. Not all of the books contain anecdotes or conversations between the major figures of the New Testament. Many are more concerned with discussing various aspects of Christian virtue and practice such as how one may conduct a good fast, avoid slipping into deceit, and retain a strong belief in the one, true God. As such, we can consider many of these texts as wholesome instruction on matters of observance. When he first translated the apocryphal texts of the Bible in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, Archbishop William Wake was a revered figure in the Church of England. He held an intense personal interest in the ancient texts, and worked tirelessly to collate and translate them into English for the consideration of Christian audiences. Although these books are not considered canon, many date from ancient times and were under consideration for inclusion in the New Testament. In the centuries since Wake uncovered these texts, it is without doubt that substantially more on the subject has been discovered by various archaeologists, historians, researchers and Biblical scholars. However, as a single source of Biblical apocrypha, Wake's collection remains the most complete. This edition of the Forbidden Books unites all of the 17th and 18th century texts, supplementing them with an explanatory preface and referential notes appended at the conclusion of each book. The chapters and verses are set out with the greatest clarity, allowing the reader ease of reading and comprehension.
