Book excerpt: This is the fourth revised and enlarged edition of the standard guide to the Foraminifera, the order of small marine Protozoa whose living and fossilized forms have attracted both scientific and economic interest during the past century. Research on the Foraminifera has developed rapidly in the last few years, because of their value to the petroleum industry and in general geologic correlation. The classification in this volume is that of the earlier editions, with such changes as could be made by new evidence which has come to light. It is based upon the known geologic history of the genera, the phylogenetic characters as distinguished through study of much fossil material from all continents, and a study of the ontogeny in many microspheric specimens which show relationships more definitely than megalospheric specimens of the same species. Fifty families, including about seven hundred and fifty genera, are systematically described and illustrated in the text and Key. A comprehensive bibliography, listing titles and authors of the most important works on the Foraminifera, is arranged according to geologic age and geographic distribution, morphology and technique, classification and nomenclature, and general bibliographical references. An index to family and generic names, both valid and invalid, is included.

Book A Manual of Practical Laboratory and Field Techniques in Palaeobiology

Download or read book A Manual of Practical Laboratory and Field Techniques in Palaeobiology written by O.R. Green and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The user This manual is designed for the use of geo-scientists with an interest and need in developing palaeobiological materials as a potential source of data. To meet this objective practical procedures have been formatted for use by both professional and semi professional students with an initial understanding of palaeo biological research aims as a primary source of scientific data. I have attempted to provide an explanation and understanding of practical procedures which may be required by students undertaking palaeobiological projects as part of a degree course. The layout of this manual should be particularly beneficial in the instruction and training of geotechnologists and museum preparators. Graduate students and scientists requiring an outline of a preparation procedure will also be able to use the manual as a reference from which to assess the suitability of a procedure. This manual is also intended for use by the "committed amateur". Many of the techniques described in this manual have been devised by non-palaeontologists, and developed from methods used in archaeology, zoology and botany, as well as other areas of geology. A considerable number of the methods can be undertaken by the amateur, and in the case of many of the field procedures, should be used. This will ensure that specimens and samples can be conserved in such a manner as to facilitate any later research, and not invalidate the results of subsequent geochemical analytical techniques which might be employed.

Download or read book The Carboniferous Timescale written by S.G. Lucas and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2022-04-26 with total page 1012 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The print edition is published as 2 hardback volumes, parts A and B, and sold as a set. The Carboniferous was the time of the assembly of Pangaea by the collision of the Gondwanan and Larussian supercontinents, and the principal interval of the late Paleozoic ice ages. These tectonic and climatic events caused dramatic sea-level fluctuations and climate changes and produced a Carboniferous world that was diverse topographically and climatologically, perhaps only rivalled in that diversity by the late Cenozoic world. Furthermore, the Carboniferous was a time of the accumulation of vast coal deposits of great economic and societal significance. The temporal ordering of geological and biotic events during Carboniferous time thus is critical to the interpretation of some unique and pivotal events in Earth history. This temporal ordering is based on the Carboniferous timescale, which has been developed and refined for nearly two centuries. This book reviews the history of the development of the Carboniferous chronostratigraphic scale and includes comprehensive analyses of Carboniferous radioisotopic ages, magnetostratigraphy, isotope-based correlations, cyclostratigraphy and timescale-relevant marine and non-marine biostratigraphy and biochronology.
