Book Foraging Ecology of Kirtland s Warblers in Managed and Natural Breeding Habitat

Download or read book Foraging Ecology of Kirtland s Warblers in Managed and Natural Breeding Habitat written by Jennifer Lynn Fussman and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: This study examines prey availability as a factor influencing breeding habitat selection by Kirtland's Warblers (Dendroica kirtlandii), and characterizes the foraging behavior of this endangered species. Kirtland's Warblers nest on the ground in early-successional jack pine forests in northern Lower Michigan. The species may reject old jack pine stands for nesting due to decreased prey density in lower branches and ground vegetation of old stands. Insects were captured in young and old nesting habitat and in mature jack pine too old to be attractive for breeding, and birds were observed foraging in young and old nesting habitat. Insect biomass in low vegetation was less in old nesting habitat than in young nesting habitat, and was much less in mature habitat. Kirtland's Warblers in old nesting habitat did not forage higher than those in young nesting habitat, suggesting that the decrease in insect biomass in old nesting habitat is not great enough to affect the birds. Managed plantations and natural wildfire-regenerated jack pine stands were very similar in terms of insect abundance, diversity, and distribution, and warbler behavior. Warblers foraged most often on jack pines, but also used ground vegetation and pin oak trees as foraging substrates. The proportion of foraging attempts in oak varied widely among stands, suggesting that warblers use oak in proportion to its availability. Female Kirtland's Warblers foraged significantly lower than males, following a general trend for species of parulid warblers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at the Kirtland’s warbler and wildlife conservation in a way that no other book has. It looks back on the history of this unique bird, examines the people and policies that kept the warbler from extinction, explores the cult of personality that surrounds it, and examines the challenges of the future—all through the eyes of the people who have acted so passionately on its behalf. The story of the Kirtland’s warbler is a story of complex relationships between the bird and its environment, the humans who interact with it, and the complex government policies that affect it. And now, just when it appears that the Kirtland’s warbler has recovered for good, a change in its status may send the warbler’s population into a downward spiral once again.

Book Human and Ecological Risk Assessment

Download or read book Human and Ecological Risk Assessment written by Dennis J. Paustenbach and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2024-04-23 with total page 1319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understand the fundamentals of human risk assessment with this introduction and reference Human risk assessments are a precondition for virtually all industrial action or environmental regulation, all the more essential in a world where chemical and environmental hazards are becoming more abundant. These documents catalog potential environmental, toxicological, ecological, or other harms resulting from a particular hazard, from chemical spills to construction projects to dangerous workplaces. They turn on a number of variables, of which the most significant is the degree of human exposure to the hazardous agent or process. Human and Ecological Risk Assessment combines the virtues of a textbook and reference work to introduce and analyze these vital documents. Beginning with the foundational theory of human health risk assessment, it then supplies case studies and detailed analysis illustrating the practice of producing risk assessment documents. Fully updated and authored by leading authorities in the field, the result is an indispensable work. Readers of the second edition of Human and Ecological Risk Assessment will also find: Over 40 entirely new case studies reflecting the latest in risk assessment practice Detailed discussion of hazards including air emissions, contaminated food and soil, hazardous waste sites, and many more Case studies from multiple countries to reflect diverse international standards Human and Ecological Risk Assessment is ideal for professionals and advanced graduate students in toxicology, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, environmental science, and all related subjects.

Book Golden winged Warbler Ecology Conservation and Habitat Management

Download or read book Golden winged Warbler Ecology Conservation and Habitat Management written by Henry M. Streby and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-10-26 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Golden-winged Warblers (Vermivora chrysoptera) are migratory songbirds that breed in temperate North America, primarily in the Great Lakes region with remnant populations throughout the Appalachian Mountains, and winter in Central and northern South America. Their breeding range has contracted dramatically in the Appalachian Mountains and many populations have dramatically declined, likely due to habitat loss, competition and interbreeding with Blue-winged Warblers (Vermivora pinus), andglobal climate change.. As a result of population declines in much of the eastern portion of their breeding range, Golden-winged Warblers are listed as endangered or threatened in 10 U.S. states and in Canada and have been petitioned for protection under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. Published in collaboration with and on behalf of The American Ornithological Society, this volume in the highly-regarded Studies in Avian Biology series compiles extensive, current research on Golden-winged Warblers and summarizes what is known and identifies many remaining unknowns, providing a wealth of peer-reviewed science on which future research and listing decisions can be based.
