Book Forage Seed Production in Ethiopia Challenges and Prospects

Download or read book Forage Seed Production in Ethiopia Challenges and Prospects written by Asiresssie Silesh and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2021-11-17 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2021 in the subject Agrarian Studies, Hawassa University, language: English, abstract: This term paper aims to investigate challenges and prospects of forage seed production in Ethiopia. Seed production of forage species is a much earlier and less developed stage in the tropics and subtropics than in temperate regimes. Many of the current tropical forage cultivars were developed 50 years ago. Most of these grasses come from species new to agriculture. They have not undergone long period of domestication through hybridization and selection. Instead, they still retain many "wild characteristics" – attributes which aid their natural spread but pose difficulties for their commercial seed production. All of this poses a challenge to seed producers who must decide where the various crops should be grown for seed, the best management strategy to apply in each case and when and how they should be harvested to maximize seed yield and quality. Forage seed productions in tropical regions are characterized by variable production. Seed yield instability of the species may be a consequence of the contrasting environmental conditions that occur during the vegetative and reproductive growth of the crops.

Book Forage Seed Production Temperate species

Download or read book Forage Seed Production Temperate species written by Daphne T. Fairey and published by Cabi. This book was released on 1997 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The grasses and legumes grown in pastures and rangelands form the basis of the worldwide animal production industry. Some species also have a significant role in the sport and leisure industry, for playing surfaces such as golf courses and football fields. It is therefore vitally important to ensure that seed supplies of appropriate species are available for use on a commercial scale. This book is published in association with the International Herbage Seed Production Research Group. It brings together leading researchers and along with its companion volume Forage Seed Production Volume 2: Tropical and Subtropical Species (to be published in late 1998), provides the definitive resource for all those concerned with breeding and profitable seed production for grasses and legumes used within grazing systems or recreation and amenity provision. The book is in two parts. Part 1 covers all aspects relevant to seed production, including improving seed yield and quality, crop management, harvesting, processing and the international seed trade. Part 2 consists of eleven case studies from eight countries covering three continents. This book and its companion should be read by all seed scientists involved in the breeding and commercial production of grass and legume seed. They also represent a valuable asset for all commercial seed suppliers. Additionally, the information presented within the book is important for all students and lecturers within departments of agriculture and plant breeding.

Book Seed Production

Download or read book Seed Production written by Miller F. McDonald and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 755 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant breeders continue to make significant advances in developing high yield ing, adaptable, disease-free crops. These advances, however, are not realized until an efficient seed production system is in place that rapidly increases geneti cally superior crops and makes them available to the consumer in large quantities at a reasonable cost. Successful seed production requires seed to be genetically pure, free of admixtures, and able to establish rapidly a uniform stand. Seed production is a complex process. Rigorous production criteria are followed by both seed producer and seed companies to ensure that high-quality seed is produced and marketed. These criteria become even more stringent in hybrid seed production. This volume identifies the factors most critical in a successful seed production operation. The fundamental considerations common to all seed crops are established in Part I, Principles of Seed Production. From this founda tion, the practices of seed production are provided in detail in Part II, Seed Production of Specific Crops.

Book Challenges and Opportunities for Agricultural Intensification of the Humid Highland Systems of Sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book Challenges and Opportunities for Agricultural Intensification of the Humid Highland Systems of Sub Saharan Africa written by Bernard Vanlauwe and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-10-07 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The humid highlands in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) are characterized by high population densities and require intensification. The Consortium for Improving Agriculture-based Livelihoods in Central Africa (CIALCA) has set up a research for development platform in various mandate areas in DR Congo, Burundi, and Rwanda, aiming to identify improved production, market, and nutrition options and facilitating the access for development partners to these options. This platform is supported by capacity building, multi-stakeholder dialogue, and monitoring and evaluation efforts. The conference, facilitated by CIALCA, aimed to (i) take stock of the state-of the art in agricultural intensification in the highlands of SSA and (ii) chart the way forward for agricultural research for development in the humid highlands of SSA, and more specifically in the recently launched Humidtropics Consortium Research Programme, through keynote, oral and poster presentations, and strategic panel discussions.

  • Author : Ronnie Vernooy
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2015-05-15
  • ISBN : 1134608608
  • Pages : 323 pages

Download or read book Community Seed Banks written by Ronnie Vernooy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-05-15 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Community seed banks first appeared towards the end of the 1980s, established with the support of international and national non-governmental organizations. This book is the first to provide a global review of their development and includes a wide range of case studies. Countries that pioneered various types of community seed banks include Bangladesh, Brazil, Ethiopia, India, Nepal, Nicaragua, the Philippines and Zimbabwe. In the North, a particular type of community seed bank emerged known as a seed-savers network. Such networks were first established in Australia, Canada, the UK and the USA before spreading to other countries. Over time, the number and diversity of seed banks has grown. In Nepal, for example, there are now more than 100 self-described community seed banks whose functions range from pure conservation to commercial seed production. In Brazil, community seed banks operate in various regions of the country. Surprisingly, despite 25 years of history and the rapid growth in number, organizational diversity and geographical coverage of community seed banks, recognition of their roles and contributions has remained scanty. The book reviews their history, evolution, experiences, successes and failures (and reasons why), challenges and prospects. It fills a significant gap in the literature on agricultural biodiversity and conservation, and their contribution to food sovereignty and security.
